    So, that experiment of using the premiere function was mixed - although I liked the live chat. I'll do a poll later on to gauge thoughts.
    My answers to questions were lost after the premiere ended, so here they are: James - unless a trawler wants to lob onboard a cod or a haddock, RAS will be limited to a hose through a hatch. Federico - at present Alan has two handheld air horns.

      The premiere are fine. The thing people hate is that there is a reminder days ahead for the video to which they have to wait. The live part is great because those early people can pop on and talk while the video is going on.

      Brilliant videos alex, I've got loads of new boat bits from stainless cleats and other bits to a Taylor's boat heater with built in water heater that runs on paraffin and uses no power, to a new disc icon vhf and a vhf radio telephone unit with separate head etc and also led nav lights and a stainless steel 2 burner meths stove with pan grabs etc, I'd like to donate it to you, greetings from orkney.

    Cool, searchlight up as high as possible as well as mount one of those infrared night vision cameras & an infrared night vision spotlight of 96 LED's with a range of 60m or more. If other boats with infrared cameras are out on the seas ahead of you then they will see your infrared spotlight faster than a normal spotlight. Also on top of your mast you should make a stainless steel or aluminium vertical 90 degrees cross or X shaped set of boards that are roughly 300mm high x 250mm diameter, it acts like a reflective mirror for using radar when you are on the open seas & should be placed as high as possible on a mast.

    • @AlexHibbertOriginals
      @AlexHibbertOriginals  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thanks.
      On the radar reflector front, Alan came with one, but it's not an ideal size. I may invest in a slimline version now the mast is ready to stay aloft.

    Years ago I owned a 25 foot boat and would take family & friends on midnight cruises up & down the Mississippi river. My spot light was mounted on the bow and I also used a handheld spotlight that plugged into the cigarette lighter. A powerful handheld spotlight is a convenient compliment to whatever outside lighting you install. If I were going to pilot Alan I'd consider adding a light bar to the mast as well. I'm of the mind that there's no such thing as having too much light at your disposal.

    You'll want to be able to reach the searchlight to remove ice buildup if the weather is causing it, so consider that and if such removal could damage the mechanism. You will also want to bbe able to have firm footing when knocking the ice off. This sea trial went well and yes, you are going to need night lights inside the cabin, throughout the entire vessel and not just the cockpit area.

    On the bow high on the handrail. By putting it aft you wil light (part of) the top deck ever so slightly. This will deminish the view on what you actually want to see. We have a handheld spotlight on our sailboat and get the best view when the spotlight clears the railing.

  • @hewbambam

    Hi Alex, watching the whole journey of ALAN. ıIf I were going to add offroad led, i would put it in a transparent box made of policarbon with a windshield wiper which can be controled inside. also ı would add windshield wipers on the other windows also. Knew its been a year but i said i'm still watching. Great job with ALAN.

  • @realsonnysullivan
    @realsonnysullivan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The cooling circuit on the engine might have a plug on either side of the thermostat and you can used these to tap into the cooling system to plumb in a radiator. You can buy what's called a bus heater or simply get a regular car radiator from a breaker that has the cap included for easy bleeding. The cap must have the same or higher psi rating than the one on the engine. Install it with at least one valve to turn it on and off or with two valves on the engine to isolate it.

  • @Fantic156
    @Fantic156 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'd mount the light as high on the mast as practicable so that anything for'ard, like the bow, doesn't get in it's way. We used to drive Landrovers offroad at night, and always used a roof mounted light bar. Not only does this mean the lights are less likely to be knocked out of position, but they also give a 'better' spread of light as they are angled down and have a cut-off point instead of just a long beam of grey mush when it rains/snows.

    the heat exchanger is a good idea, maybe sand off a section from the exhaust manifold and wrap a few heat pipes around the exposed section and up through the lid. Some passive radiator fins and you should take some load off your heater in the arctic. I'm not an expert and maybe there is a better way to go, but this seems simple and reliable with no risk of CO poisoning.

  • @digitalta
    @digitalta 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Probably stating the obvious here but like with the white light inside the boat, wherever you mount the searchlight it is important it doesn't do the same harm to the night vision of the crew while in use. Apart from that, being able to direct it could prove handy. You do have the bow hatch so that adds in more possibilities. Then again a higher position has its uses.

  • @ralpha112233
    @ralpha112233 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bit late with the suggestion about lighting. Probably, maybe a little bit more expensive but have you considered mounting an infrared camera to the bow? It would aid in navigation and would also help with any visual problems coming from the use of white light. Added to someone's suggestion of infrared lighting and you'll have day visibility at night.

  • @arcticfox5118
    @arcticfox5118 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know im late to the party here but i actully have that exact type of light on my semi (lorry). One major problem with them is that heavy vibration, bumps and jolts cause them to crack around the seals both where the case has the hole for the wire and where the "glass" meets plastic and allow water in. Especially if they get salt on them. You want to use a dab of waterproof silicone around them or they rarely last more then a few weeks to a couple months. A thin line of silicone in the cracks applied with a small stick or skewer makes them last for years instead as the small cracks in the plastic either dont form or form below the silicone.

    You want to be behind that light .. as far as auto lights go fog lights produce a flat fan spread of light wide but low to avoid bounce back and flare ..sometimes with a yellow tint to help reduce the reflective glare ...Driving lights produce an oval or fan that reaches out a fair to long way but also lights the edges of your path ...the older long range driving lights are more like a search light beam ...very tightly focused ahead with a small circle of bright illumination. With some diffusion spread, depending on the air conditions
    Put one on in fog and you wont see much beyond dazzling white .
    Id put fogs down low ...that one forward on the rail or upper front hull and if if someone can give you an odd long range lamp have that ahead of your steering hatch so you can point it at will.
    You can buy LED light strips that can be set to different colours. ...but the low voltage external garden rope type in a plastic tube might be useful inside or out as a way of marking Alan's presence.😁
    Have you seen the Heart of Gold catamaran lifeboat project.

    On your spotlight, you would be best to mount 1/2-3/4 up your mast? Tower? Stump? Anyway, as high above the drivers head as you can but you will want to reserve the top for things like a navigation light, and radio antenna. Not sure what the lighting requirements are in the UK but here in the states you need a white light at your highest point.

    Depending on the light pattern. Is it a combination of a wide beam and a focus beam? At what distance do you need it to het the water?
    My suggestions test it out at night in a parking lot or something.
    With your rearward steering position I imagine you need the light to shine far out in front to be of use.

    • @AlexHibbertOriginals
      @AlexHibbertOriginals  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rated at 1.15m, but it'll vary by how heavily loaded.

    Re naming storms... Come on now.. admit it. You'd be proper chuffed if they named a storm after Alan!

      Only if it's a full-bore, obnoxious, totally unpredictable but utterly charming storm.

    Do you suggest that a storm in the Thames as you moored in a lifeboat has drama ? I gasped and laughed... Now I cant watch more.....Its like Noddy rows a boat in a pond. Did you ever go to sea.? Sorry .......

      Your gasps and laughter are all I could ever wish for Peter. I truly hope your comment makes you feel clever. All the best from Noddy, Alan and me.
