    1.5mm stainless steel mirror sheet
    Delphi 296 fuel filter cartridge
    Bostik Cementone cement
Leoch 12V 210Ah Pure Lead Carbon battery

Here in Sweden, it used to be easy to get everything from bolts to gaskets, filters, ball bearings, etc. quick and at a good price. That is no longer the case. The fact that more and more sellers on the web are pure crooks, is of course one of the reasons for that. I understand your frustration. Great video as always!👍

Remember if a brand has filters you are not paying for a higher quality filter you are just paying for their name to be on it. For storing the filters do a light spray of WD40 on the bare metal out and inside then cover. That will prolong the storage time and will not hurt the engine later on when you use it. Just some advice from an old Marine engineer.

You are highlighting a problem we are all wrestling with when ordering online. Cheap, easy and quick to have a slick, professional website with invites to treat. Could be something behind the website or just an utter sham organisation. The old principle of caveat emptor applies but difficult to apply in all cases - the con men are cleverer and oilier than us.

I've used Baldwin filters for many years on my tractor trailer over here in the US, and I never had a problem with them. If you are worried about particulates that much consider placing a small magnet at the bottom of your filter to catch and trap metal and rust shavings inside of the filter.

You mentioned additives to your fuel and water dispersant was one of them. You have a fuel filter which does a great job of separation whilst avoiding combining fuel plus water into solution (? the science of dispersion). I am wary of a lot of additives although I do use a diesel performance additive. Perhaps leave the filter to do what it does best rather than disperse water and fuel into the system. As mild corollary the "leak seal" additives marketed to to seal say radiator leaks simply gum up your coolant supply and rarely work. This sort of snake oil is to be wary of. Perhaps buy the ring of immortality spruiked many years ago by an enterprising individual Alex Chiu. Not sure if he is still alive though

Wow, the Bukh parts are incredibly expensive.
It is not just cement which can find small leaks. One of my hobbies is woodturning. Sometimes we need to use epoxy resin to fill cracks and voids. It is amazing how challenging it can be to create a seal on oddly shaped piece of wood to attempt to prevent the resin from going all over the place. Thin CA (superglue) is even more challenging.

Hello Alex, noticed you are repalcing your battery but it seems like you will have problems soon with your batteries because you put a new battery into the old battery bank, they have differnet internal resistance meaning the charging capability of the batteries will be different, risks of charging and discharging Issues: Mixing batteries with different states of health and charge/discharge characteristics can lead to issues with balancing, where some batteries may be overcharged while others are undercharged. This can result in reduced overall battery bank performance and lifespan. This is something that your battery seller should advise you. need be careful if the batteries are in high frequency use.

@@AlexHibbertOriginals I'm confused by this reply. I thought cold performance was the main reason you avoided lithium iron batteries, and the weight of lead carbon was just a bonus considering your need for ballast?
I specifically thought your logic was something like "yes the inside of Alan will be heated, but I don't want problems with the electrical system if something goes wrong with the heat"

    • @AlexHibbertOriginals
      @AlexHibbertOriginals  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Paul.
My reasonings for using Lead Carbons for the housebank are multiple. They are much, much cheaper than lithium per Ah. They do offer 'free' weight for ballast. You can abuse them similarly to lithiums, within reason - fast charge, lots of cycles, deep discharge etc. They are even safer than LiFePO4, even though the latter is in turn a lot safer than LiPo or Li-ion.
In discharge/under load, LiFePO4 (or any lithiums) will broadly outperform any lead battery in terms of capacity, down to -20 or -30 degrees. In fact, many lithium batteries are functional (although not unaffected) down to -40deg. eg for small primary ones: data.energizer.com/pdfs/l91.pdf For charging, neither will like being charged below 0 deg C. Both will likely be damaged by cold charging - which is why some expensive batteries have internal heating elements.
      Hope that clarifies!

Allen is so fiddled over and pampered!
Odd that an engine manufacturer used a non standard thread pitch. Are they possibly Wentworth pitch? As far as the filters, is it not possible to match up with a standardized manufacturer? OEM is not necessarily the best filters available. On small diesels, I had luck in the past matching up with Kubota branded filters. I would also try matching up with CAT.
Arguably the best manufacturer branded filters available, Also Cummins. Nothing would look more handsome on Allen than CAT yellow filters!
Fuel filters, Racor. The initial first filter with a sight-bowl is a little more expensive, but then you can just buy the cartridge bit from then on. I would though, purchase an extra full set, filter and lower sight-bowl, because the sight bowls can crack for no apparent reason, usually over tightening by some gorilla, but if you’re careful, I suppose one will suffice, in the cold, frozen, vastness of the great white bitter cold🥶.
Batteries, you’re a well established TH-camr, with a well established purpose and are refitting a very robust vessel for an extremely challenging environment. I would think that Victron, or some other major battery manufacturer would be more than anxious to step up as a sponsor with awesome state of the art environmentally paired batteries, and wishful thinking an energy management system. Well worth trying anyway.
Keep up the great refit of Allen, and the videos!
    Cheers from Dallas Texas🍸

BTW, my engine and engine related component recommendations are based upon my 30+ years of experience. First turning wrenches, then as a working shop foreman, then as a general manager, then as the working owner (I missed the hands on bit, so I could usually be found in the shop loving on some engine that was being a little cantankerous, so I dove back into the repair side) of a 19k sq.ft. repair and engine rebuilding facility. So with the bolt threads, this isn't an imperial vs metric thing, is it? Imperial also has a "coarse thread" and "fine thread" standard (I'm not an expert). It just seems odd to me that the thread is COMPLETELY custom, versus an odd standard.
I owned a 1990s Jaguar. Wonderful mix of imperial and metric.

    • @AlexHibbertOriginals
      @AlexHibbertOriginals  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

In this case it's a purely metric issue. Unbrako widely sell the normal/coarse 1.75 pitch M12 bolts, but even their own documents show no evidence of a 1.5 pitch bolt. However, there they are in the Bukh spares manual, and you can only order them through the Bukh dealer, at >3x the price. Cheers Paul, and commiserations for the post-Leyland-era Jag! ;)

I was originally thinking you had a bolt you didn't have the dimensions / specifications for, and couldn't find replacements at hardware or marine stores. In that case I was thinking maybe it was an unusual imperial thread.

You buy from online stores to save a few dollars and this is what o get.
People usually just suck it up.
You have to goo on all the sites and give views on your detailed experience, company name and the names of people you were speaking to.
The reason you got in the situation with your batteries is because people before you didn't do this.
There is no way you are the first one to experience this with that company.

I wish there were bricks and mortar companies to turn to for these sorts of things. Many of them do have premises and trade counters.
I agree that it's customers rolling over and giving in that allows them to continue acting like this.

    • @mazdarx7887

@@AlexHibbertOriginals Don't really need brick and mortar stores. just got use the volumes of info on what other people are having success with. I see lots of people buying junk from pretty sites. Using lead acid batteries as an example , you have flooded and glass matt. The old flooded deep cycle, like used in golf carts seem to last the longest(6 to 10 years) as long as you keep the water topped up and you don't run the voltage below 11.7 volts. Golf courses can usually get 6 years and they get run hard every day. Another big mistake is charging off the motors alternator. Go into almost any marine store around the world , they usually have lots of filters and alternators in stock. like in your car, alternators are designed to charge your starter battery, and run the electrics in the car . but i think it's great that people keep buying junk Keeps my wifes family busy repairing mistakes
