The first half of the final leg of 2023. We hoped to get much further, but weather and scheduling means we do as well as we can. The route gets more scenic, and this time there's a crew of three. There's lots of anchoring, And, our destination is the famous Viking-raided island of Lindisfarne.

Alnmouth is notorious for very dangerous tides. Wouldnt have fancied rowing from Alan to the shore around that small harbour.
Oh! Luckily we dodged that.
You should check out Maxwel wiring harness tape. It works very similar to electrical tape except for its cloth and has three very good properties. One it sticks to itself even when wet. Two it's very abrasion resistant. Three it can back up as medical tape. I always bring it with me to work.
Fantastic episode Alan and crew! While broken plastic ore locks are disappointing, rowing canoe style makes a more dignified approach for three blokes. Thanks for the entertainment while enjoying my morning cup.

Hi Alex, tip: why not an airtag like device in your dinghy? Set an alarm on your tablet or smartphone and get an alarm when out of reach.....
Great Idea! The usual dinghy thieves rarely go far, so tracking it down may be a possibility. Even an old mobile phone in a secreted pelican case, so you can use the find your phone service. I use stainless chain and dyneema. Lets hope dinghy thieves don't realise how easy dyneema can be overcome with a cigarette lighter.
@philgray1023 thats one reason to airtag, the other is when you lose it during sailing you immediately know it, and not after a few hours or so. As what happened to the last dinghy.......

Suspect the lost opportunity at the nautical museum to have junior seamen dorn Alan with a bit of fancy knot work on the railing will present itself again. Oh how dapper Alan would become … as well as offering something textured to grab. But then again, having the new camera mounts capture a drunken sailor returning from shore taking a dip would provide some great TH-cam entertainment. Waiting for The Blackadder to jump out from one of the castles to defend Alen and it’s crew! Well done.

It might be worth worth while threading the tow rope through the bough loop and all the way back to a hard point on the transom for added security.
Heeding to Alex's call, I'm here in the comments down to get cross with anyone who wants to argue in favour of the neo-liberal ransack committed against the UK's rail industry. I'm inspired by Alex's lovely experience with Arriva UK, as described @05:30 or so.
Enjoying your adventures. The north-east coast is spectacular. I think I would be inclined to get a small outboard for the dinghy. Perhaps an electric motor, with a rechargeable battery, as you only use it to ferry you to, and from the shore. You will always have the oars, in case of emergency. 👍

I'm not totally clear on your autohelm setup, but it may be worth having some way to rapidly disconnect it from the tiller. I have the same one on my sailboat, and it can sometimes get confused. It looks like the helmsman couldn't reach it, and it would be a bit of a chore if it suddenly decided to start turning circles!
It lifts off instantly if it goes crazy. But yes someone need to be down there to do it.
I have had two of those tiller pilots and both were rubbish. It's probably being led astray by some nearby metal or even the alternator. The hall effect sensor in nine eventually gave up and just steered me in circles. Good luck mate! Enjoying the videos.
They certainly aren't reported to be perfect, but thousands of people see them as a helpful addition.
A major design update from one manufacturer would stir the pot with the others.
Good progress up the coast . Pity about the oar lock , but maybe it's best to find out early about any weaknesses and faults . Great that you found two crew , and you all seemed to get along .

i saw a shipyard build a production motor yacht, 60-70 foot boat that had an optional kite sail. would pull the boat at about 7 knots. dont know if hull shape effects that,but may be worth looking into to save some fuel or just as a backup. pretty sure your motor isn't moving you faster than 8 knots and it would pack away pretty well.
I've looked at various ways to mount / rig sails/kites, and it's mostly cost or space prohibitive.
I wonder if you envisioned such a saga when you first purchased the boat. Buy boat, add a few bits -sail. The saga is indescribably addictictive so I am glued to your progress but given your history of ice snow exploration is there an element of frustration or have you discovered a new field of interest/problems? Are you comfortable with the hurdles of your previous passions?
Yes our initial timeline was much more compressed. I'm rather enjoying this more elaborate story for Alan. I was frustrated by the loss of the Dark Ice Project, but things happen in life, and I'm not a trust fund kid being bought a ticket to the North Pole. Comfortable with past hurdles? Yes.

I know you don't want to show you and your crew/friends sleeping, but seeing how it works would be cool.
Would you be able to show how the setup works with a crew onboard?
Thought about making a heat exchanger for the waste heat coming out of the engine room and exhaust? You could even make hot water without using any power with a small tank and some copper tubing making hot water for tea all the time.
You can actually buy those devices quite cheaply. You run your engine cooling water through them.
@philgray1023 yes they do sell them but wrapping a copper tubing around the exhaust and plumbing it to a small tank will make hot water with no moving parts
Enjoyed the video thank you. I think you need to go through the full set up (calibration) routine with the autohelm. When it was disconnected and you were getting that tiller wobble do you think that may be rudder fouled with marine growth? On balance I think a remote control at the helm for the autohelm, would be as worthwhile upgrade as the autopilot was itself. Fair winds and a not too bouncy sea.
The rudder gland needs repacking. Plus the tiller extension isn't bolted properly. Friction fit isn't good enough.
Finally new episode :) love it, do those guys got any boating experience? Do you looking for more to crew?

If you have not already tried it: Try to change the sensitivity/update frequency of the autopilot. Most Raymarine should have this setting. This should reduce the deviation. (We had the same problem on our boat) Have a safe journey folks!

I really did. Disappointed to not see the Tyne up close. But it wouldn't have made scheduling sense.
OH - carry a tillerpilot spare end cap (where it drops on the pin). They break after thousands of miles. So does the pin. A 6mm bolt works just fine as a spare.

Do you have space for some hard points that you could utilize to attach a hammock or two? Might provide better rest in a rolling anchorage or sea state for an off watch crew. As long as I’m suggesting things unsolicited. I do have a crazy idea for a folding proa to help with the roll offshore because it is going to get sporty. I know that you are confined by the limited keel and ballast space on Alan. Just trying to think of ways to make things as comfortable as possible for you and crew. Thanks for the videos. Cheers.
While *Allen* had a fortnight off I didn't miss him. Why? you may ask. While cleaning up fallen tree damage from a very nasty summer thunderstorm I fell from a height of 3 meters and have spent the last 10 days convalescing with three cracked ribs. Give Network Rail a break. It's not like trains have been around for the last 198 years. I'm sure the entire rail system will be perfected and running like clock work in the next two years (nervous cough).
this is a bit more work (but only a bit, I promise), but -- you may find yourself quickly wishing that Alansøn were a bit more independent of human power when getting around. I modified a small boat into an electric "center console" by getting a 24V 3HP trolling motor & battery, a little aluminum console thing I could drill things like a steering wheel and cable gear assembly into, and the midsection of a dead gas motor with the appropriate steering hardware, and then attached the trolling motor to the midsection such that it could then swivel back and forth by use of the steering wheel. voila! of course you could just go with the motor if you don't loathe tillers with a firey passion like I do, but where's the fun in that?
I'm saving for electric outboard at the moment. One will fit onto the dinghy. 👍
If ever do the journey again, just go past Alnmouth beach into Foxton Bay, much more sheltered. Up the steps and good food at Foxton Golf club.

lovely progress, happy for you! i love the sea, ive spent many weeks on sailboats, partially single handed, but the thought of spending time on alan... while safe, he's slow and pretty rolly, little space and comfort, sensitive to wind and probably waves... i'd find that very unattractive as crew. i really hope you find good people and have a lots of fun though!

4:48 Concerning your newly installed camera mounts: I’m a little bit afraid they might become a safety issue.
Let’s imagine someone has to go out there on heavy seas and is thrown against the railing by the waves. If the person hits the railing where a bolt is, the bolt could be pushed into the person’s body or head and cause severe injuries or worse.
What do you think?
The exposed thread is very, very short, but point taken. Silicone caps shouldn't be hard to source.
Might actually last kept out of sun and salt water if not overworked by rudder forces
Re your fuel bladder, you need a bungee chord cargo net fixed to the flat. Save yourself the money. As an aside, (depending on the chord) you will have close enough to perfect fuel pressure. Alternatively, you can choose to fill the bladder with a gas (inert from a pony bottle if you need added pedantism) so it keeps its shape and remains secure. You are welcome !!!! As an aside, your bladder contributes to noise and vibration reduction within the cabin. You will lose that with a tank, unless you wish to also adhere mass loaded vinyl panels to that too. Just saying.

I have found yet another thing to worry about ( probably unnecessarily) … once your get up to arctic waters next year, how are you going to keep the small window for the helm station clear of ice and snow buildup so you can see where you are going?
Yes that window is a work in progress. Thinking a potential heated duct, or electric element.

No more than on most boats in the cold. You have to get up there and chip it off.

Really enjoy these videos... are you not tempted to just carry on following the coast all the way around the British Isles, theres a chap on youtube called Harry Dwyer doing it clockwise on a small rib with a 30bhp outboard.

The onboard heads function. Well, hard for it not to. But we did make use of shore facilities when possible.

That loop you use to secure your autopilot when not in use is going to be incredibly annoying to use underway, especially when your hands are cold and you're in heavy waters. I'm no sailor, but I would expect a loop of bungie cord or maybe velcro to be much easier to use while being just as secure.
Alternatively, like how I offered to 3D print Alan before (which still would be a cool idea, especially now that he's closer to final shape), I would be happy to 3D print a bracket for you if you get me some dimensions (or design the model so you can get it printed locally), then you'd only need to worry about latching that bracket shut and not keeping the whole thing in place.
Velcro would work for sure. In any case, the autopilot isn't for big seas. More for when pottering along.

I have used an Autohelm for many many years and am amazed they seem to be exactly like they were 30 years ago. . .Couple things. READ THE MANUAL, if you haven’t. . .the adjustments for this device are astounding and can absolutely stop your variance. Also, I’m not sure if asking the Autohelm to steer and also turn your steering wheel (a shocking amount of resistance) is going to work long term. Regularly check how hot the device is getting. You might be better off with a wheel based auto pilot. . .Second: I’m sorry but there is no excuse anymore to paddle soft bottomed inflatables. . . Get a 2 HP or electric motor. . .life is just too short.

The torque on the pilot motor is pretty low. It's not drawing even 75% of its rated current when steering.

No, but basically it's just inflatable mattresses on the port and starboard side platforms that span the walkways.
few dumb things - 1. you dont row tenders. get an electric drive unit. oars are backups. 2. your action cams will rust. get saltwater poe cams with 1 tb microsds and run mousing cable thru the pipes . 3. you havent read the manual for the tillerpilot. 4. your rudder tiller connection has too much wobble -- its not a bobblehead doll. 5. your anchor deployment is garbage. get a crab pot reel and stow marked chain on the drum. 6. get a real evo3s chartplotter.
p.s. I have a video for a small boat anchor setup you can use with very few mods.your setup you can lose fingers.

For my layman's eyes the way you drop the anchor at 15:18 seems quite dangerous.
If the anchor suddenly gets pulled tight it would crush your fingers. Would be a shame if we didn't get regular videos just because you decided to spend some time in a hospital 😁
I'm not sure there's a way of manually dropping anchor that doesn't involve holding the chain. It's not attached or looped around my hands.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals no, it's not that you hold the chain, it's how you hold it.
By grabbing it from below you put your hands between the chain and the metal bracket. And if the anchor gets pulled tight your hands get pushed down and get crushed.
I would grab the chain from the top. Maybe even just pinch the side of the chain with my fingers. So that if the chain gets pulled it doesn't push the hands down but instead just rips the chain out of my grip.
Just like with mooring. You never put your fingers between the mooring line and the bollard.
I hope that makes sense. And as I said, im just a layman. Maybe I'm completely wrong 🤷🏼♀️
I see your point, but I don't think it's more a finger risk even if the chain jabbed down a few inches. I'd not get caught in it. Anyhow, point received with the spirit intended.

We in UK also call them "rowlocks" pronounced rollocks. They are usually fitted to the "gunwales" pronounced gunnels. which are the top of the sides of the dinghy.

@@AlexHibbertOriginals I understand the theory and thought behind them and get it but on a recent trip to the former great plains of America aka tornado alley Nebraska and always hearing about the wide open expanse of it all and the darkest night skies you can see all ruined by thousands of flashing red strobes in every direction. Not to mention the fact that when they become obsolete the windmills are just left to decay and not taken down for the most part only to be reminded of the half measures they really are.
