I like following people with unique lifestyles - Jetting Julia (flight attendant), Eva zu Beck (adventures on the road), Sailing LaVagabonde (life on a sailboat - with kids!), The Crew Chef (cooking for crew and guests on a mega yacht), and Kara and Nate (travel) are a few. Probably the most “normal” type blogger I follow is Shelby Church Vlogs and sometimes her sister Monica. Good vlogs can be hard to find sometimes so appreciate your advice!

"Now one cares about you." I heard this advice a few years ago and it changed my perspective completely with content creation. People want something for themselves. What is your audience getting out of it? Eventually, if you're lucky, they will start watching not just for the content, but for YOU.

Vlogs is what I mostly watch on TH-cam. For me, the vloggers I'm drawn to are those who align to my travel interests (e.g. Japan), silent ones (asian vloggers), hometown ones (vloggers in my city), and finally those where i simply find their life or personality unique or interesting to me. Editing and style are also important but not deal breakers

This is exactly what I came to realise. I had to understand that no one actually cares about me or what I do 😂 - so I changed my content to be a lot more informative and having the focus on what viewers will actually want to see. Of many people enjoyed the vlog content, but viewers ultimately want to be engaged - and since I’ve changed my focus/content, my channel has grown SO much in comparison to how it had been growing!

I am only 2 years late hahaha but I really love and appreciate how you break things down. "you're not talking to an existing friend, you're talking to new friends" - this made a lot of sense and yes you have to be mindful that you will have new people stumbling on to your page. I've been vlogging on and off since 2016, to be honest I really love it but sometimes I think my content is a bit scattered. I've also had very varying success, some vlogs do AMAZING, some don't do well and sometimes maybe subconsciously that causes me to procastinate a bit. Super excited to learn more from you! Love from Australia

I am currently planning and preparing to start a TH-cam channel and am doing a lot of research for it. And I do think the whole "Nobody cares" topic is crucial. Your vlogs / stories should be showing something that is at least a little different from what the average person experiences or should document what life is like for a certain specific group of people in order to really engage viewers. What I mean by that is that most successful vloggers who document their life are e.g. living in a cabin in the woods or living in a van or have a specific career so they can show what a work day looks like in this career or are a student at an elite university so people are curious about what life is like there etc. etc. As Katie mentions in the video - you don't have to survive by yourself on a desert island, but your vlogs should contain aspects that are in some shape or form out of the ordinary - even if it's just taking a swim in a cold lake in winter or something that people are going to click on just because it's different from their own everyday life. It should be something that people will want to watch because maybe they wish their life could be like that or are working towards that. Of course there are many other aspects to it but ideally your vlogs should be something that not every single average person with a smartphone can effortlessly reproduce.

Part of the reason I love your videos is I feel that I get so much value from what you say. You don’t just tell us: for example, I didn’t understand the “and then” storytelling method you were talking about until you illustrated it with making a work vlog, and then I had a lightbulb moment! Two things I think from hearing what you are saying. 1: How can I make my vlog relatable to my viewers (new and old). 2: How can I bring value to my viewers (new and old) Bonus: How can I combine the two to make a SUPER engaging video that always leaves my viewers coming away with something.

Yaaas 100% more vlogging tips and strategies please!
There's a lot out there about the technical side of vlogging, but not enough on how to plan a vlog / your series of vlogs. I find it all hugely interesting on how to structure a story in a single vlog, but then also what is the bigger story narrative of you and your vlog channel (much like a TV show)
Any strategic insights are much appreciated 🙏

Thankfully since I’m in the authortube nitch I at least always have a “working toward this goal” narrative, but now that I’m transitioning to starting gradschool I know I have to take my channel in a new direction and am not entirely sure how to get there / the planning aspect is definitely tricky!

Very useful advice, Katie! Thank you.
I think I can nail the "and then" adjustment with a "No, Miles, no....!" theme regularly, which is quite authentic. My daily life is mostly like that. Intro: I have a plan today, mostly, I think. I hear: "I don't think you should do that, Miles!" (buildup), and then "Miles, I told you" (breakdown, maybe literally), and then, me again, with a conclusion: "I'll be back next time for you guys, my sadistic returners, and to the new ones who are wondering how it is possible for me to resolve this. I guess you can guess how it'll start...."

I do love hearing everyone’s perspective on this but to be honest I have been doing vlogs for about 5 years ( not consistently of course, just for fun )
I started my channel when my granddaughter was about 3 she is 8 now . But this was something I enjoyed doing like a hobby, but I realized when I would watch these types of videos it would make me discouraged and not enjoy what I once did . So to not drag this out , if your doing this expecting to earn a lot of money then your doing it for the wrong reason. Just remember love what your doing and be CONSISTENT , That’s my advice plus I do love this channel she always gives good tips , Happy Saturday 🌞

Yes please. More help with vlog videos would be great!👍 I'm starting a vlog channel and feeling that deer in headlights fear. 😆

idk a lot of “big” vloggers never seem authentic, I much prefer vloggers who just talk to you like you’re their friend and flows like a FaceTime call, but to each their own (this was still useful advice tho!)

I include vlogs in as a part of, but not the focus of, my content. I posted one vlog and asked my subscribers if they would like to see more vlog regular content. They overwhelmingly said yes. I've been I'm a new TH-camr and I appreciate your recommendations for future reference.

This was great! Very few of these cater to vloggers. And as a creator I feel like I get lost in the story line and forget to do the TH-cam specific things… like remind them who I am.

I like that intro idea because typically whenever a blog has an long intro I either skip forward or stop watching 😅😆 I feel bored once I see it over and over.

Loved this video, I’d love more TH-cam strategy videos! I’ve recently pivoted to lifestyle (decluttering, saving money) from sewing tutorials and my channel has suffered a lot!

    • @katie
      @katie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

that is so tough! a pivot is always going to be a bit of a challenge as your audience gets used to your new topics. i would really encourage you to just keep going with it though! if you'll be happier making your new content that's the most important thing, and it will just take time for the youtube algorithm / audience to get used to your new content :)
