I wonder how many soundcards for the PC-98 was released?, kinda hard to find a common list, also i know Creative released the Sound Blaster for it time ago but never catch on unlike it's PC (in japan terms: PC/AT) counterpart that became defacto standard.
Well the most common soundcards (or soundboards as PC-98 users call them) for PC-98 are the "PC-9801-26" which was released in 1985 and containing a Yamaha YM2203 FM Synth supporting 3 OPN FM channels and 3 SSG channels, replaced quickly by the "PC-9801-26k" that works on faster machines. And in the early 90s NEC released the "PC-9801-86" sound board containing a discrete PCM chip and the Yamaha YM2608 FM Synth supporting 6 OPNA FM channels, 3 SSG channels, a PCM channel and various drums channels and that sound board is fully backwards compatible with software supporting the "-26" sound board. There were some clone sound boards like the "Speak Board", "QVision", and more. There were also some other unique soundboards but those aren't really popular. Sound Blaster 16 for example had a socket for a YM2203 for compatibility with software that support the "26k" board but later PC-98 Sound Blasters AWEs didn't have that and only supported Windows.
Hey there! Just as an initial disclaimer, I'm kinda new to Umemoto's music (as I finished PC-98's YU-NO sometime this year), but hoping that'll change in the future. This compilation was really interesting. Out of YU-NO BGM (and the others, though I wouldn't be able to know), I couldn't help but notice that your selection seems -to me- to follow a clear pattern. As I know virtually nothing about music, I can only describe it as a particular vibe that leaves out "softer" or more melodic songs, which, in my opinion, are more memorable. (I'm thinking of Mio/Ayumi/YU-NO's themes, Contact, Movement themes...). The only exception would be Reminiscence. But, again, I don't know how to describe what I'm thinking of. Apologies in advance. So, my question is, if you have the time and feel like it: would you say this selection is representative of Umemoto's "style"? Or maybe the songs I listed aren't too far from this, and you just didn't feel they would fit? Sorry for the wall of text and vague explanation, but thanks in advance for taking the time to read it!
Hey, interesting comment, thank you! I don't think I'd agree that this list doesn't contain "softer" or "more melodic" songs. This selection wasn't meant to be representative of Umemoto's style. It's just tracks I particularly enjoyed listening to at that time. I additionally was trying to include max 3 tracks per game. Evidently it didn't work out in case of YU-NO. I could swap them with many others though, including some of those you mentioned (as a sidenote, Ayumi's theme was composed by Ryu Takami).

Yes, PC-9801-26K, PC-9801-86 and Speak Board. Although of course here they are emulated using hoot.
