  • In this episode the surgeons discuss various foods that can contribute to inflammation. This is a long list of different types of foods, however, different foods may have different effects on different people. Obviously it would be impossible to avoid all the foods on this list, however, this list may be helpful to people who have inflammatory conditions such as trauma or autoimmune disorders and are trying to identify foods that may trigger their inflammation.

In the past three years, my husband and I gradually changed our diets according to what you have mentioned. He had gout and RA and PMR. We no longer (2 yrs) drink alcohol. He has lost 60+ lbs. (now 200lbs, 6’), no gout, RA, PMR. Walks 12+ miles at a time. No more inflammation. Please people believe it. He is 79, I, 77. You don’t have to feel old just because you have a high number age.

I'm 76 and regularly (4-5x a week) jog 4 or 5 miles, plus 30 min calesthenics, to kick off my active days. I agree with everything except pairing red meat with processed meat (and then focussing on nitrates). For years I have eaten a mostly home-cooked keto diet free of sugars, grains, starches, seed oils, and alcohol. I do better eating quality beef than poultry.

    1. Sugar
    2. Trans fat
    3. REFINED carbs (glycemic index spikes)
    4. Alcohol (sorry!)
    5. Red and Processed Meats (AGE)
    6. Vegetable and Seed Oils (too many omega 6’s)
    Runners up:
    Gluten
Nightshades (these are okay, no proof that they cause inflammation)

Seed oil and vegetable oils in moderation aren't inflammatory according to this nutrition scientist.
He presents the evidence with links to his sources in the description.

    • @someguy2135

Some people might be sensitive to nightshades.
Try removing them from your diet temporarily to see if you are one of them.
There is a video from the Nutritionfacts channel that gave evidence to that effect, but I can't find it to give the link.

Thanks for this video! 3 months ago my husband made a radical change in diet as an experiment. He feels so much better eating salads, salmon, chicken, fruits and veggies. Last night we had Chinese and a decadent birthday cake. He commented that he'd pay for it...today he's got body aches, back pain and headache. We just watched your video and it's nice to have the science to back his personal experiment.

oftentimes the size of the meal, which is why technical french and spanish eating, involves stages with long periods in between if the dishes are high calorie, usually due to being high fat. And the timing of dessert. Needs long delay after sizable main course or meal. But in the end, it's that combo of a quite high total cal meal/s especialy if the are high fat with high carb. Great great ! Video. As a doc myself , I have recommended these same suggestions. I luckily got to live overseas as part of my childhood, in Europe and it is so easy to eat healthy. There are so many good things to eat. So many ways to prepare delicious vegetables and fruits with lean protein such as fish, chicken, turkey, and limited beef. It’s in the last 30-35 years that here in the USA, the large food industries have contaminated our ideas and force feed people. When I was in Jr high and HS, when we had a dance or other social activity , THERE WAS NO FOOD! It was great. We knew to eat before the activity and then go and enjoy the activity not go to eat. In the late 70s-80s , during the disco era in college, we would go dancing and not eat because we ate before going out. I feel food is the focus for all activities. Also, the style was to be thin , not huge.

The medical community really missed a great opportunity to talk about obesity when Covid showed up. The CDC & stats show it put morbidity at a higher risk. People's fear could've broken the PC ideas about fat shaming so we could again talk about the role of nutrition, weight control & health.

    • @IMeMineWho
      @IMeMineWho ปีที่แล้ว

@@MonarchAZ The problem is how many doctors view obesity. One can be thicker than they used to be because of years of working out, running, rowing or dancing and the scale can be higher but they do not have much fat to their body. Another can be thin but flabby..and then others are clearly just obese. But many doctors only look at the scale. We need better education than what is currently on the internet.

Lol. Rocker chick..but pro dancer..i.e. not disco but rock dancing..dancing for us in 89-90s was done before..then for some ungodly reason, everyone wanted to go out to dinner after dancing or seeing a band or performing..(the performing thing I get..but after I do, I just want to go home..lol). I think your way made more sense as I'd slog along half asleep with the rest wishing everyone would go home and sleep as geez..it was 230 am! (The old joke from Tom Kiefer of Cinderella is the bassplayers and drummers go out and cause trouble, the guitarist mopes about how he sounded..and the vocalist everyone assumes is the wildest goes home to hope he or she sleeps because if he doesn't his voice will suffer). At least your way you got some zzzzzs!

The foods we eat have both direct and indirect effects on our bodies. I have known about some of the inflammatory foods and stay clear of them. People with a genetic variant of MTHFR are more sensitive to inflammation from nightshades due to the alkaloid solanine, which is the inflammatory chemical in nightshade vegetables . This can be tested in a simple blood test by Labcorp. Blueberries also have solanine, the inflammatory chemical in the nightshade family. Eating blueberries every morning led to finger stiffness for me, which went away when I stopped eating blueberries every morning.

So, I am trying to understand long-term healing and the inflammatory process. I have had 2 knee replacement surgeries, each a year apart, the last one being Dec 2020 and I am still in pain. Sometimes still swollen! Will this ever go away?? I am thin, in pretty good shape, work out (as best I can, certainly more limited now) and thought I was eating pretty healthy UNTIL I just recently read Eat to Live and have changed the way I think about food, nutrition and my health. (I don't think I ever thought about it before, I only watched calories to stay thin, probably suffered from malnutrition, lol!!). Do you think my pain and stiffness is still just part of the healing process and may never go away or can this possibly be chronic inflammation? Thanks for any advice!

Starting small is still better than not starting at all. I was eating a LOT of red meat, fried/baked potatoes, and white corn. Now I eat more salmon, shrimp, chicken, pork and lamb instead. I still can't resist a deal on tri-tip or ribeye steaks so I generally share those meals with my son and my dog who craves red meat protein-so I'm not stuck eating the whole thing by myself. Pasta is probably the hardest thing to cut out of my diet so I've been trying to rotate in cabbage and onions sautéd in avocado oil, oven baked sweet potato and yam fries lightly coated with avocado oil garlic and pepper. Lots of sautéd squash. I also found that whole grain brown rice isn't so bad. I'm also a big mac and cheese fan. Does anyone know if the whole grain wheat pastas are worth the substitution or are they almost as bad for inflammation as the regular pasta? Baked potatoes are maybe once a week instead of 3 times a week. Red meat once or twice a week instead of 4-5 times a week. Trying to reduce down to once or twice a month. When my son is staying with his mom, I live on salads though I know dressings are high in dairy fats and/or sugar so I try to go light...like I'm dressing the salad in underwear instead of an entire outfit.

Sensible quantities of fruit? Eat as much fruit as you want. It’s packed full of vitamins and antioxidants, and contains fiber, which greatly reduces the absorption of naturally occurring sugar. People think you should limit fruit because of sugar, but that’s not true because it’s a different process than eating added sugar in a processed food item like candy or crackers.

Must say that everything you said in this video, I can prove correct. I was a 35 year vegetarian and thought I was healthy. It wasn't until three years ago when I went vegan that my arthritis cleared up completely, my blood pressure dropped to 80/50 and my quality of life went through the roof. At 69, I'm now running at least a mile a day, climbing ladders like a 25 year old and dropped from 140 pounds down to 100 pounds (I'm 5'1"). Best thing I ever did for my body and psyche. Great video. My daughter just gifted us a ninja 2 zone air fryer. It air fries veggies wonderfully. I also add ground tumeric and ginger to help with inflammation. Maybe you could do an episode on healthy spices for inflammation.

@@TalkingWithDocs Suggest you consider Curcumin as an anti inflammatory, I use it as a treatment for ulcerative Colitus, to great effect, as I didn't respond well to the drug alternatives.

May I ask, in what form of curcumin are you taking and when and how much? Thanks

Thanks for the wonderful videos and educational info. I'm evidence that people can change their tastes and the foods they enjoy. I grew up in the country with lots of garden vegetables, but also lots of beef. My family became vegetarian 20 years ago, and step by step we have changed the way we eat. In the beginning, we were eating "whites" but as our tastes lightened up, we explored more brown rice, whole grains, etc. Now we don't crave or even think about eating those foods. You learn that when you do decide to "splurge" and eat them, you don't feel good. It definitely becomes easier and easier to eat healthy because the cause and effect is crystal clear.

My husband and I have had the same experience as you. The more we change to unprocessed fresh food (brown rice, whole grain stuff), the better we feel. And, we pay a stiff price when we “go off plan.”

@@TalkingWithDocs Stop peddling avoid red meat rubbish and do some more research on it.
Studies into red meat that are done when a meat eater and non red meat eater don't drink, don't smoke, are not overweight and exercise regularly shows zero increased risk to health.
