  • After Watching the first season of Alone and before i went out on alone seaon 3 i thought if i were to go to apace with bears i would find a way to live up a tree. The hammock makes going up a tree to sleep a bit easier . So after geting a Warbonnet hammock i had the idea of changing out one of my 10 items for the hammock so i could more comfertably live up in the trees to be safe from Bears and Wolfs and other things that might want to eat me.

To prevent bear attacks: One must whip approximately 3 bacon strips near his buddies campsite away from your own tree campsite. True story!! Can’t verify but sounds right.

Here in Alaska, Ive seen 300lb young brown bears sleeping 20' up in trees. And most any Black Bear is right at home in a tree. And any bear too big to climb can absolutely shake you out of a tree. Youre much safer on the ground, in a tent with all your cooking done 100+ ft away and downwind of your tent.

Stede is right. Although it's nice to be off the ground, high and dry, this configuration might protect you from pretty much every North American mammal except bears, lions and humans. Of course any opossum, raccoon or even an angry squirrel could have it's way with you and your only escape route would be twenty feet straight down with gravity in charge and not you!

I generally agree about black bears being a minimal threat. I was just pointing out the difference between ones that climb (black bears) versus ones that do not (brown bears) and that it is odd since the tree hammock would only protect him from brown bears which are not in Maine.

8:12 hitting a knot like that with a hammer or rock etc helps if you've not got a corkscrew.... It seems to soften the knot allowing you to pick a line to start working on. Just thought I'd share that!

As usual there is a tonne of false information about bears in the comments here. Let me try to address some from personal experience and firsthand accounts I've grown up with.
    1 bears can't climb:
Already thoroughly covered, black bears will climb even small trees almost as fast as they can run. It's terrifying really.
    2 Grizzlies don't climb trees:
True, they push them over. Then they eat your liver and chew all your fingers off while you scream and cry. It's why they are called "grizzly"
3 bear spray is more effective than a bullet: Search the "stop eating my kayak" video to see just how much bears don't give a fuck about bear spray.
4 shoot it between the eyes:
This unfortunately is your only target when being charged... The head is huge and it's center of mass. No heart or lung shot is possible at this point. Unfortunately it's a horrible target. Bear skulls are thick and sloped and as noted earlier they often deflect bullets. The key here is the right ammunition. Steel core military rounds are your best bet for bear defense. They will pierce the skull and kill him dead. You will be shitting your pants and shaking so multiple shots are your friend. A 30 Cal semi auto is the best bear gun. It's not 1879 anymore old cowboy guns like the 4570 are great for what they are but an sks is actually more effective. The Russians routinely put down charging brown bears with this caliber and rifle.
4.5 Shot guns are the best defense.
If you have a shotgun, slugs are not as effective as you would hope. They often have poor penetration and anger the bear. Buck shot to a front leg works. A man from Bella Coola stopped a massive grizzly this way just a few weeks ago. She tumbled and went down giving him time to get away.
    5 black bears aren't dangerous
    WTF???
6 bears are just minding their business
True. However, bears consider killing a sport. Not all bears but some do. I've seen entire flocks of sheep slaughtered by a single black bear just for fun.
7 bears are scared of you
No, Apex preditors are selective when it comes to confrontation. This is a survival strategy. Consider a bit of live and let live. They smell certain protiens in your urine that show you are a predator. So they treat you like any other predator and steer clear most of the time. However under certain conditions or even moods they will fuck you up.
8 reports of attacks are rare
Well this isn't true. I personally know of several people who were maimed or killed. In my grandfather's generation it was much worse since more people worked in the bush. I've heard stories that will make your blood go cold.
Also many attacks are never reported. Please people, DO NOT HIKE ALONE! Most people who go missing in the wilderness are alone. If I had to guess I'd pin this stat on Mountain Lions, they are better at hiding the evidence, but I'm sure bears and wolves do their share too.
Please stay safe and don't listen to hippies or outsiders. I live in the great bear rainforest and have hunted and eaten bears all my life. They can be docile and playfull, I've seen it myself. But don't be fooled they can just as easy be playing with your broken and mangled sobbing mess of a body as they can frolicking after butterflies. Remember, a bear is essentially a giant pig. Pigs can be cute and friendly but they also experience blinding rage and often kill and maime people. The word bear comes from the word Boar. They are unpredictable. Treat them with respect.
