„It was a wedding ring destined to be found in a cheap hotel” - great line, with brilliant background music. Very delicate with a low background sound, but at the same time, for me, the culmination of the whole piece.

Everyone focuses on Steve Rothery's guitar playing, which is sublime; but the drum and bass section in these tracks is just brilliant.

I'd argue perhaps that "sublime" just about pips "brilliant"?

Love the Clutching at Straws album need to dig the CD out and give it another listen. These 3 songs are the first 3 on the album

The last of Fish. Just about hanging on to his vocal range at this point. His solo work fitted his voice for longevity. Great stuff. The song This Strange Engine is a good one for Rothery.

Marillion is a great progrock band. Fish was the poet, 4 others were the magical line of the horizon ! Logh HORRUZZ french fan since 1981

Thanks for the reaction Todd! You may be mixing up the band "Phish" with "Fish" the first vocalist with Marillion, though. You may want to look further into that. They are not connected that I am aware of. Fish did have a solo career after Marillion, and there is some great stuff to explore. But, it was great to get your reaction to Marillion live with Fish as the lead vocalist. Especially with a trio of connected songs that were meant to go together, because this is prog after all. They had really developed their own distinctive sound by this point.

Oh, well that makes since, I was so confused. Thank you for clearing that up for me Digibirder.

Nice reaction Todd - all the rest of the band bar Fish are the same to this day - much less hair now though 🤣🤣
These songs come from the last album with Fish - Clutching At Straws - which is a kind of concept album about a writer with chronic doubts of his own ability and a seriously large drink problem - possibly a thinly disguised reference to Fish himself.
Anyway a great album, well worth checking out in its entirety.
Please check out your email, as have recently sent one to you.
More stuff coming down the pipe shortly, and thanks for your - very - fast reaction.
Still working my way through some of your other reactions - loving the Tool and the Dead Can Dance - have linked a couple of live(ish) videos back there that you may enjoy watching - to Jambi and to Rakim.
Both are liable to blocking if I ask you to react to them, so it will have to be a just watch and marvel 😉😉
In case you wonder, the Tool video for Jambi, is a fan made effort, mixing various shows - excellently done though.

Just been back and noticed the Rakim link I sent has been removed by YT.
If you want it will send it in email next time.
Probably because it is on dailymotion and not YT.
    Oh well, such is life.

The costumes are worn by the character Torch, the protagonist of the album these songs were on, on the covers of various singles and the album itself. Torch is a singer struggling with success and addiction.

I think you're confusing Fish with Phish. Fish is a Scottish singer who had a solo career after Marillion. Phish is an American jam band. Very different versions of the gill breathing vertebrate.

At nine minutes thirty-nine seconds Steve Rothery completely screws up. He starts his solo much too late and we can clearly see the bassist Pete who disapproves. For almost the entire piece, he is out of step. The fatigue of this tour and the bad atmosphere before Fish's departure! On this very complex piece Steve would have needed a sonic or better visual marker to start his solo!!!

Is it? It's still fun to see them live. I love love performances. Studio is a different beast. They seem like a great live band to me. Thanks for your comment Steve. Enjoy the channel, Todd.

Album versions are always more polished, but would you really want to go to a live show, and just have a recording of the album played through the speakers?

@@paulf2557 I don’t think that’s his point. Of course you go to a live concert to hear the band play live, but in most cases, studio production gives the listener a better feel for the nuances of the music, which is important if you are a first-time listener. Having said that, Marillion always do a great job of playing, and recording, the full range of their music in their live performances.
