I’m in Southern Wisconsin and I tried the lazy way to overwinter my geraniums this year. I simply moved my geranium pots into my attached unheated porch facing East and left them there. They are still there. I placed a thermometer out there so I could keep track of how cold it got out there. The surprising part was how hot it got out there on sunny days. I did not cut them back. I watered them once/month, but only 1 cup of water per 12” pot. I did cut off all blooms and shortened the taller stems. In March I noticed some buds forming and in April the buds bloomed. The leaves stayed green all winter. In May I will hang them back outside 🥰. I thought of this idea when I noticed that our bank put all of their large pots of geraniums inside their lobby for the winter. They water them as usual, and they look great all winter in a sunny window. They will put them back outside late May.
You make me laugh. You’re right, it is very hard to believe the geraniums will come back to life. Looking forward to seeing it. You inspired me to try this but I had to store them in an unseated attached garage. We’ll see. Hugs to Max.
Wonderful video, Jes, and so happy your geraniums made it through the winter in your basement. I watched all the hard work you did preparing them last fall. They're beautiful and you saved a lot of money. I started mine from seed last year, overwintered them in their pots in my greenhouse. They're outside now in my Zone 8a and looking gorgeous again. Geraniums are fabulous and so many different varieties. You're so much fun to watch.....along with your kitty. Happy Gardening.
I did try over wintering them in bags (I’m in Michigan too) but I did forget to check them so after the new year I pooped them back in soil so they can come back to life kept them in the house during the winter they are doing awesome they even bloomed in the house but I did take them outside to my green house to live yesterday cause having 186 house plants and counting lol it was taking up space for a new potential house plant
I’ve taken my geraniums in the last 2 years. I planted mine in pots 4 to 5 weeks ago and have blooms on a lot of them. Seems like a miracle they survive like this.
Hello Jes, thanks for the movie. Along time ago I did this with my geraniums I mean it was probably 45 years ago lol I know along time ago😂. But it did work. It's so cool and exciting when you open up the bag I seen brand new starts loved it. 😊❤ it really saves alot of money like having free plants so fun. Thanks for sharing dear sweet Jes, God's blessings to you and Nate and cute Max ❤
Jes, I planted my up on February 21, 2024. They look the same as yours at that time. They are Beautiful now and blooming. I tried to copy and paste on my comment to you it wouldn’t let me. I’m in Michigan also not far from Howell, Brighton area.
Hi Jes 🌺. Very cool video about your geranium and they will be amazing like last year. My geranium they stay out in my garden and in containers and they grow well in winter . Have a great day .🌺🌻🌺
Thanks for reminding me to check on the 2 I saved last fall. Humm. Not sure mine are alive but soaking the roots now to see if there’s any life left. Your seedlings are beautiful. Better than pro growers. Happy planting JES!
The geraniums you planted by seed are so healthy - wow, you have a green thumb for sure! I tried overwintering a few geraniums in bags like you demonstrated and it worked - amazing!
Ask your sister if she will store them in her greenhouse for you. I planted geranium seeds, but very few have germinated. I have better luck doing winter sowing than if I plant seeds inside. I watch a lot of videos, and I feel like I'm doing what I should, but have little success. Yours are beautiful!
Hi Jes! I was so excited this spring as I unbagged my geraniums from last year! They all survived! Thank you for this helpful information! I potted them in garden center containers as it is still too cold here in Minnesota to put them in their summer spot, which is an antique washtub. Thank you again for this idea! It saves so much and is so easy to do! God bless you! Love your peaceful videos!
Hi! I just potted my geraniums up that I overwintered. They are small, but I already see tiny leaves forming. P.s. I’d love to be your neighbor! Have a good day.
I'm in Texas and we had a harsh freeze so I threw mine away because it looked like yours but it was squishy I remember. I was even hesitant to throw away but I really thought it died. I may purchase some more this year and try this method!!!
Gosh Jes your seedlings look amazing!! I'm definitely going to give those a try next year!!! Why not get your mom's baskets and up-plant them now? I know that I would totally appreciate that!! They would be looking wonderful by Mother's day!😂💗
Can we get an update on your begonias grown from seeds? I’ve been having the hardest time growing them i seeds started 20 only one made it 😢 I need some good tips on how to grow them maybe I’m over watering?
Yes they like to dry out a little in between waterings. Not completely but they tend to mold up and get stunted if they have too much water. That being said they are a bunch a sloths 😂 they take forever!
I wonder if it would hurt anything to trim the geraniums back before storing them over the winter. I also wonder where I can purchase geranium seeds, I've been looking but haven't found any in my area. Do you need a growers license to buy them?
Jes I’m so happy your geraniums came back for you. You are going to have lots of them. Lots of Free plants!

Sadly mine were not good. Another reason to go to the garden centre. 😊
Great video, Jes! Your geraniums look fabulous! I am potting mine tomorrow. This is my first year overwintering them.❤

That is an amazing idea! I’m going to do that!!! Thank you 🎉
Fun! Would those behind the curtain be too cold at night? Let us know how they do.
Nope! I did this last year in a window on the same wall and they did fine! 🎉

@@jesthesinginggardener they do take forever the one I started months ago and single one that made it is about 4 inch tall it is taking off now
I wonder if it would hurt anything to trim the geraniums back before storing them over the winter.
I also wonder where I can purchase geranium seeds, I've been looking but haven't found any in my area. Do you need a growers license to buy them?
Any of the seed catalogs or online through Amazon
Nope! I bought my seeds from Swallow Tail just in the internet!
Trivia question.. how many times did jes say "DEATH" ??
I know. LOL like 19 times at least 😂
