- This video has ONE goal. MAKE. IT. RUN. I know these "will it run?" type of videos have been pretty popular on the channel and what better questionable result could there be than an auction bought inoperative 13 year old BMW?
I'm just good at collecting basket cases I tell ya.
Somehow I landed this clean title 2010 BMW 535i X-drive Wagon with reasonable miles for a reasonable price and a "Mechanical" loss type at the auction.
I've already owned one of these cars for years so I'm very familiar with their multiple failure points and possible issues. I had NO idea how good or bad this car was, I just knew the risk was low as the price was cheap enough to still come out ahead if the car wasn't worth repairing by simply parting it out.
Digging into this car exposed so many incorrect repairs and bandaids that I'm almost afraid to tackle the less important things, but I will eventually.
Let it be known, I don't think these are good cars for everyone. They are great cars for people like me who like to turn wrenches and don't mind spending time and money fixing the things that fail as they will. I do like how they look and drive which is why I'd even be willing to put up with their "reliability" in the first place.
I do have grand plans for this car as an eventual replacement for my blue 535xi wagon. Of those plans, the big ones are converting this car to RWD and manual transmission, unlike any wagon sold in North America. It will certainly be a while before this car makes an appearance on the channel again. Hopefully by summer time I'll have the other project cars done and this one can get into the limelight. I just didn't want to pass up the chance for the cost even though the timing wasn't perfect.

If you are a owner of an expensive car with special technology...
... than you have to pay for a equal mechanic (trained special for these model and every year some days away for training school of BMW america).
A lot of mechanics are unable to say: my knowledge is to ......... l for these computer based engine designe.
A lot of owners are unable to understand that european cars are very expensive in europe and in the US.
e.g. BMW (or Mercedes-Benz or Audi) can not a normal worker afford to service (or buy it new with zero miles).
These brands are for better payed owners and these owners drive only in BMW Service Center (never ever to a cheap garage).
I dont wish that these mechanics fly in a plane with service by equal mechanics.

As a long-time Audi guy, I should probably tread carefully here, but for some reason I break into a cold sweat whenever I see someone trying to fix a Bimmer. It just seems like sadness is never very far away…. Kudos to you for being willing to try, and able to overcome all of the gremlins. It’s clear that a resilient nature, a great sense of humor, and at least one parts car are really helpful! Thanks for sharing, and it’ll be great to see how this one moves along. There’s always something special about successfully resurrecting a car in distress…

@@glfarwell my wife Sandi and I had an E36 M3 for a number of years, and drove it as a daily driver, including driving it completely across the country and back. We had virtually no issues with this vehicle. We did do the routine maintenance on it.
As a newly Audi Avant guy I can attest...unless you are doing the work yourself the costs I've seen are insane.
Have no illusions. This guy is an elite mechanic.
An elite mechanic who dives in and changes a HPFP without basic thought process on eliminating the low pressure first? I don't think he is. Enjoyable content but elite mechanic he is not.

When you drive, you want to enhance the experience with music making the drive more meaningful and enjoyable. A non-car guy wouldn't understand
@@jamesmackie9292 3200hPa is 46psi, that's what a low pressure pump usually puts out so I could see the confusion. Kinda weird BMW doesn't have 1 more pressure sensor to rule it out.

I saw a while ago where you said there are a lot of comments about people wouldn’t wanting you working on their cars, I know you’re business is dismantling cars but watching you working on cars it’s clear you know what you are doing and do it well. I wouldn’t have an issue with your work and it’s a great seeing someone do things so meticulously and doing it the right way.

Most of modern car repair is in diagnostics, and nothing teaches you how to troubleshoot like figuring out the difference between a good and bad part in a junkyard.
The guy that can find a problem is the guy that can fix it regardless what they do for a living.
Those people are telling you they don’t understand how to repair things, without telling you they don’t know how to repair things.
For less than a G, I think you got a great "diamond in the rough." The electronics modules aren't too horrid to do with junkyard replacements and a laptop with some software "freely" available on the internet. This car looks like it was REALLY spec'ed out by whoever purchased it. Noticing the night vision cam; those aren't very common.
As someone who's done the CCC ---> CIC conversion, it's nice to have it already. Parts are hard to find, and swapping the console controller is a pain.
The CIC can be even further modernized with android auto/apple carplay boxes. 2-300 from Chinese retailers like Kremersino, and not too hard to put in. They just use the CAN bus inputs from the controller and sit between the head unit and display to give you a full phone experience without interfering with or replacing any factory hardware.
I've done like CCC to CIC in E61 including combox. It's not hard and I think I still have another CIC in the basement. Anyone wants it?
@vadimr4866 True for most of the swap. The faceplate is the hard to find part, and the hard work is if you want the newer idrive controller. Either replace the entire center console, or mill out the old one and make a custom mount/bezel.
The problem with that idea is that when the radio fails then it can take down the entire CAN network and prevent the car from starting or running.
I enjoy your engine tear downs. However, I really love these restoration videos. It is so much more satisfying to see a unit returned to life. I hope that you will have time and the budget to do many more of these projects.
Eric, when/if you pull that fuel tank setup, tie a string to the crossover lines before you pull it out. Then you can use the string to help guide the lines back into place. Should save you some irritation.
Was about to make the same comment. I just did this job on my ‘04 530i and used the string trick.
You are a better man than me. When I work on something that has been that screwed up by someone else, you would be lucky to get 50 words out of me in the whole video. Everything else would be s solid beep.

Since i was a kid i fell in love with the shoebox volvo station wagons and since then the love for those never stopped, but nowdays is like a niche fetish or something.
Exactly I agree, even in Europe there's way to many shitboxes suv because of pushed fashion... Wagons are way much better.
You said that the car had sat for awhile, hence the corrosion on visible parts of engine. That corrosion could go a lot deeper and involve a number of things, most notably electrical connections. I was a radar maintenance type in the service and when we got into the digital age and working with low voltages (.001 > 28VDC) a common fix for a problem was to simply pop a circuit card loose and reseat it in it's connector. Moving the coil packs around accomplished that and now the full voltage is flowing to all necessary places. I agree with your question "who the hell worked on that car" all I know is I wouldn't, I diddled a little with my `78` Subaru, setting valves, replacing water pump, but I wouldn't even think of tinkering with my `22` Roo with twin cams and all the electronics.

I am just a home DIY mechanic, but I learn a lot from your videos and also all of the common failures on car engines. This is so useful to help me make an informed decision on any car I purchase in the future. You do a GREAT JOB and I have watched MANY of your videos. REALLY looking forward to more on this (enjoying the 911 series as well). I considered a BMW wagon 12yrs ago, but went with a 2004 Volvo V70R 6sp instead. It's still our DD with few issues. I miss the gadgetry, but it's much simpler to maintain. Not working at a european shop anymore made owning a german car a daunting task. Your work/repair ethics are refreshing as I too believe things should be done correctly down to the minute details. Will be vicariously enjoying this series!
It's simply amazing the way you got through all that without swearing once. If I'd been doing that job the air would have been blue throughout the whole ordeal.

I’m really glad to have found your channel. Your engine teardowns are great fun as are your various car projects. Those of us who’ve been waist deep in repairs definitely appreciate the humor and determination you bring to challenging jobs that may or may not work out as planned. Above all, your knowledge of each car’s quirks and your troubleshooting techniques are an education for all of us. Keep up the great work!
The tank assembly is why I had two more children so late in life. (I'm 65) My 21 yr old daughter does this backbreaking work for me while I sit back and "coach". The other daughter loves hard work, she could watch it all day!
BMW wagons from the Bangle era look better than the sedans and coupes. There is no Bangle Butt and less of his "flame side" non-sense.
While I question your love for BMW's, I admire your patience.
I enjoyed this video, much like your Miata and Corvette series. As much as I like watching you tear down an engine, it's interesting to watch you rationally diagnose and work through someone's previous bodges. Plus, the color combo on this is sweet, you can't beat dark green exterior with tan/brown interior.
Got to say; I admire your drive on these vehicles & engines. As the years have progressed, the more I miss Points, condensers, distributors, rotors, plug wires, dwell timing, being able to see the ground when looking around the engine, etc. etc. Very interesting stuff though. Your take on the specific reasons for varied models, years of mfr., etc. Keep up the good work.

Great video. Quite a change to see you work on an engine that you'd like to be running when you're through putting a wrench on it. I felt for you having to change a high pressure fuel pump while the engine was still in the car.

That fuel system is a nightmare. You can be pretty sure that everyting about that German over-engineered car will be difficult to work on. I used to work on EDP machines in banks and one day I received a service call for a small 80 column dot matrix printer on a bank president's desk. I assumed it was a plastic Epson printer that you can fix in 5 minutes, but when i arrived, I saw a German printer that weighed about 40 lbs. It took me about 15 minutes to remove the cabinet, then I was confronted with aluminum castings and the base that held all the mechanisms was a 3 inch thick aluminum casting that was crc machined with precision extensions and drilled holes. Where the print head was snapped into the Epson, this was held in by 4 special screws. I replaced a switch and put it back together. Testing showed that it printed just like the $65.00 Epson and I found out later that the bank paid $400.00 for the German printer. I told them that if they ever decided totrade it in , I wanted it to display the base as a piece of art. I assumed that there was a team of machinists and engineers who designed it.

You should use a "fish wire" or "fish tape" to pull it through and hold it so it does not get tugged back when you install the lines. Like an electrician would use to pull wires in a wall. The gas and sticking my arms in it would scare me , if it goes up in flame, so do you!
With all that Gasoline soaking into the carpet, I almost expected to see a "Jay Leno" moment.
I was thinking about the fish wire idea while watching as well. I’ll bet that’s what they do at the dealerships; tie a wire to the one coming out, and then tie on the new one to pull back through.

Hey Eric, I'm sure someone already mentioned it, however, if you connect a 'fish tape' or similar string or rope to the old unit before removing the crossover lines, it will give you something to pull with using a tie strap to keep the lines together. Just saves a little time and headache :). Also leaving the right side sender loose in the tank will give a few inches to work with connecting the lines on the left side. But congrats on the tenacity and perseverance to see this through 👋👏😀

@@lzaffuto - Yes ! I have had several and they are really great drivers cars...Long trips? A snap! You are not even tired... But they do require a lot of preventive maintenance and if you do not do it when they say, they might come back to bite you... Love all Bimmers!!! :)

My nephew obtained a 2000 540i sport wagon back in 2010ish from his father. He asked me to check it out. I was impressed, both for good and bad reasons. His father was very particular about getting maintenance done on time so it wasn't an abused car at all. After checking it out I told him... "Drive this for 6 months and sell it!" Well, he didn't sell it after 6 months and all sorts of things started happening, one of which were the air bags failing. The plastic parts in the cooling system started failing, the ignition coils started to fail ($90/each x 8 for full replacement), the upper and lower radiator hoses failed, the power steering pump failed, something in the brakes failed (I didn't repair that one but it was VERY expensive at the BMW dealer. More than the kid could really afford).... all after about 8 months of daily driving...He finally sold it as his life was changing. BMWs are either heaven or hell: the masochism to joy ratio determines which it is.
I can’t believe I waited 2 days to watch this! This car has no business being drivable after the previous “mechanic” was finished with it. I suspect that missing connector on the line in the fuel tank is probably rolling around in the tank. I’m amazed that you got this thing running. Kudos on the entertainment factor as well.
I just found an almost identical 2006 530xi green wagon that’s been sitting for 7 years for $1,200. Bought non running, got it running but gotta replace all the rotten brake lines now. Please keep making videos on this thing
I had 2002 e39 530d M-sport wagon. Best car I've owned. Easy to service, everything (almost) comes apart ja goes together. You just can't leave things broken; you need to fix them fast. Still remember last VIN numbers GW44062. I even have very old dyno video on my channel. It made 223 hp. It had navigation, Bluetooth handsfree, Webasto etc. Still miss the car. Imported it from Germany to Finland.

I lived in Germany for 8 years and while there I owned a 525 turbo diesel wagon. That was one of my favorite cars I’ve owned. I wish I still had it but it was a German spec car so shipping it back to the US was not going to happen.

Even though I don't share your BMW addiction, I love how you explain how if you're into X kind of car how finding just the right version of it (e.g., having a favorite color of a given model) and rescuing it can still make sense, even if otherwise illogical/crazy. And I like how you explain that there are different kinds of cars that make sense for people at different levels of skill (and resources). Keep up the great work!

I have a strong fondness for the BMW wagons of the mid to late 2000’s, but I also know their reputation and don’t have the luxury of wrench on them myself when they want attention. I am both very jealous of that beautiful wagon and also very sorry for the frustration you are going to go through!

Seeing this video reminds me of the joy I had when I got rid of my E60. Man, daily drives were filled with anxiety anticipating that BMW musical chord going off for yet another problem. Fun to watch such a skilled mechanic work on them, though!
I've always been a Toyota guy, was even a Toyota tech for 10 years. I was very worried when my mom decided to buy an e60 as I've worked on all sorts of cars at the dealer and in my experience, German cars were the worst. That was by far the worst car my family has ever owned and we've been through dozens of cars. 3 sets of injectors, cats, 2 turbos, every single hose had to be replaced after leaving her stranded at least 3 times. Water pump also left her stranded. My daily is an 06 highlander with 400k and has never left me stranded once, we've had it since new. My 93 supra has 220k on it and has also never let me down. Pretty much none of my Toyotas ever let me down. We never took the e60 on long trips as it was too risky, always something with that car. It's too bad because when it ran it was a blast to drive....when it ran...

This was a blast to watch. I felt like I was watching one of those hoarder shows where you wonder how much worse it can get.
Looking super cool. Love the green over tan interior combo. Plus it's an LCI which means that it actually looks good. I know those rear view mirrors are styled to look like F11's but they look a million times better than the original parallelogram shaped ones. Please keep them

The guy across the street from me has an X6 (with an ///M badge) whose rear suspension has collapsed like that. The thing is, he’s been driving it like that for months! I followed him one time and even on relatively smooth roads the vehicle was bucking like a bronco. Insane.
Sorry that guy with the X6 M cannot afford to keep it up...
Really enjoy both the teardowns and the project cars. Definitely have seen plenty to know to not want to own a BMW (and I enjoy DIY, but not to that level). Look forward to more Miata action too!

I’ve only watched a few of your videos since yesterday when I ran across your channel.... but I was damn near in tears when you said I wonder where I could find a compressor at a salvage yard.....? After the whole high pressure full pumps & coding the injectors & fixing the super novice repair attempts of a “green horn”... I was catching onto your Quotes.... I was dang this man is gonna get this car done tonight....!
I do not work on cars much anymore but I’m diggin’ your channel & I’ve actually learned stuff... always a plus.. Ohh & cool tool pulling the, “ sending units/ floats” outta the back seat areas...! I know that I worked on an older ford ZX2 that I had changed out a unit that was the fuel ⛽️ pump, in that same area... The high pressure fuel pump you changed on this bmw was cool to see also... Awesome skills Man.. You are a very talented Guy & a Great teacher.. 👍🏼👍🏼✌🏼
