OH WOW! I think my jaw was dropped the whole video! Thats crazy cool! That spike just made me step back! So cool! I started growing milkweed for monarchs this summer. I found some in seed when we went to the lake so i brought those home. They will grow in my environment. Some of the 6 pack of seeds i bought wont return next year. Our winters are harsh. 😂
@@hillbillyorchids Ya, I bet grabbing the local seeds will help them do well! It such a cool genus, reminds me a lot of orchids. Probably why I’m growing a few dozen species lol
I learn something awesome from you every time, Stephen! Catesetums are like that one friend who is wierd and cool at the same time 🤪 Speaking of taking forever to open up, I just posted on the Orchid Board about the 1st blooms on my Ctsm. tenebrosum x callosum opening so so slowly. Is that a normal occurrence for first-time bloomers? Also, my state has about 21 native species of milkweed. I've never thought of cultivating it for my butterflies, though -- until now. Looking right now for some plants to add to my orchid grow space. Thanks for the view of your plants and of those cool caterpillars!
@@LeasaMarie58 I’ll check out that OB post about the Catasetum! How hot are the daytime highs? Also, where do you live with so many native milkweeds? It’s such a cool genus that checks a lot of the same boxes that orchids (ie, rare, challenging to grow, super unique pollination systems, etc) and the USA is the epicenter of their diversity!
@@SVKLOrchids My daytime highs for this summer have been ranging between 86 to 91 (with some feel-like temps in the 100s). I'm in Florida, spec. South Florida. I learned that I have to be careful NOT to plant Tropical Milkweed (a non-native evergreen that grows very well here) as it can be detrimental to monarchs. Luckily, there is a nursery in my neighborhood that has several safe milkweed native varieties for sale.
How exciting!! Not only is it very beautiful but you had a bit of a mystery to solve. I have my first-time spike on a catasetum I bought from SVO. This was new to me about the difference of the stems (m/f). I look forward to seeing what this plant puts out later in the season.
A fascinating video. I don’t know much about Catasetums, but two of mine have flower spikes about 4 inches long. 😅. My milkweed died off last winter so I’ll have to replace it. It regrew for about five years, then just quit.😢. Have a nice Sunday.🤗🏝️
Have 2 ctsm Melina Division “Bombshell x Ctsm Dentigrianum ‘SVO Excellnce’. Bought them last fall. One bloomed last month and the other just opened. They resemble each other but spots and coloring are different. Neat to see that. Being new to ctsm I was surprised the flowers only lasted a week after taking so long to open. You answered why they didn’t last long, probably male flowers. Didn’t know that they make two kinds. Hope they bloom again since new bulb they came from is not matured yet.
It is great to watch the growth and blooming of your catasetums.. The color of the cross flowers is amazing! I am still waiting for my catasetums to bloom. A few of them seem to be too young to bloom this year, but I have two of them that look big enough. Unfortunately, they give no indication that they are going to bloom. Can it be too early?
I always think Catasetinae are interesting but can't seem to commit to growing them. I have added a Brassia Rex, and Paphiopedilum haynaldianum recently.
How would a judging center even approach this bisexual inflorescence, though? It's like pulling teeth at mine for them to even respect fully female Catasetums, I cant imagine them scratching their heads on this one before casting it aside as "unjudegeable" (actual words spoken by a senior judge toward a species that had previously had AOS awards on female flowers)
@@StefanNeher Yes, it is certainly judgeable with both male and female flowers! Scoring would be tricky since a scorecard is based on a single flower. The award description should have to include two descriptions since both flowers are so different, but I could see why a judging team would only include a description of the flower that received a score. But every judging center is an autonomous unit, so there are likely those centers that would pass on a spike like this! I suspect our Texas centers would score a Catasetum with males and females, though.
Hello Stephen if I could ask a question. I recently received a catasetum seedling but it started to lose it's only 3 small leaves because of transit I suppose since it is summer here in Spain. I was wondering if the plant will naturally produce new leaves or because of the stress it won't? The roots look healthy honestly. Thanks a lot!
@@Alvaru78 I would water and fertilize it and hopefully it continues to grow! A lot of plants are putting out a second growth right now, so maybe yours will do the same!
Awesome side by side comparison. Thanks for posting Stephen!

@SVKLOrchids Yea so many types seeds require being put in refrigerator for 30 days to get them to grow. Those probably do well over our winters.
@@hillbillyorchids Exactly! Just sprinkle the seeds in fall and watch them grow in spring!
