Today I talk about some of the identifying features of a Catasetum that is or is not going dormant. I also show a bunch of spikes that should bloom soon and one blooming Galeandra.
I have really appreciated your videos this year! I can’t find many Catasetum care videos. I grow in Eastern Washington State, and it’s very dry, but mine seem to be doing well.
man, your catasetums look great as always, and tons of blooms! we are still slogging away as another growth season ends and no flowers :( but alas, we shall keep trying! hope you have a great week...
@@elpilarorchids Thank you! Do you have lights for them yet when you bring them inside? If I recall correctly, yours get tons of sun when outside, right?
@@SVKLOrchids hey SVKL, yes, the get "lots" of sun, but here its never that sunny! and we do have small led strips they live under inside. its not a ton of light but its a full 12 hours now and they are in a tent with "slightly" higher humidity. hopefully we can get something to flower....keep up the great updates!
damn, good thing you didn't show your kids or talk about a lemonade stand in this video, we wouldn't want to make anyone mad.🤣🤣 Mine are all in weird mode this year because it is still hot, humid and raining. I know they are thinking about trying to go dormant but the weather just isn't cooperating. (I've lived in Florida 20 years and I have never seen this much rain in October. Ooh, and maybe a cat 4 hurricane to boot.)
Uk growing and mine one does show dormancy signs too . But they are really tiny in comparison with yours, bit bigger than a finger . Hopefully they will make it through the winter . Just my Monnierara had a decent size but got what seems to be symphylas in the pot and dropped all her leaves while ago . I just repotted in fresh media with no water and she’s gone to sleep maybe one month ago 😂
Catasetum are looking great! Can't believe that one put a growth so low in the bottle! Crazy! The galendra is it fragrant? I absolutely loved the scent on my Galendra baurei! It was so amazing, I couldn't keep my nose out of it! 😂
Can you let me know or do a post about feeding Catasetum types during the fall? Especially the ppm . I'm using 550+ a bit. About every 4-5 days...with pouring the feed through at 3 days.
You could probably cut that back by 3/4 at this point and then zero it out at the end of October. I can try to make a video about it, but I kind of eyeball my fertilizer since the Catasetums all have baskets with slowly dissolving fertilizer. I'll have to think about it....but I think I can do it.
Wow those are some sexy fat pseudobulbs! I didn't know the white stripes could be used as an indicator of dormancy when they get green. At which point do you stop watering? When they turn green, or when they start dropping leaves?
@@Notanknoparty I’ll stop fertilizing all at the same time, probably in the middle of this month. Then back off on water in November and dry by Christmas.
Stephen, thanks again for catasetum video. Hey I have a few Catasetinae that never sprouted this year. Bulbs are still firm - no rot. Is there a chance they’ll sprout next season?
My two Catasetums have bloomed and are done. The leaves are still green. The third one ( seedling) hasn’t bloomed, but already lost 2 leaves and the other leaves have all turned yellow. Should I stop watering that one or wait until all the leaves have fallen ? 🤗👏
My catasetum has one yellow leaf left, so I assume I should stop watering? Also, do you leave it in the medium with the old roots or do you remove it and cut off the roots and just lay it on a shelf or put in a new mix?
Yes, it sounds like you can let that one go dry. I only repot if the media has soured or if the plant has outgrown the pot. If I do repot, I'll cut off 60% of the roots and get it in a new pot when it wakes up in spring.
@@SVKLOrchids do you leave the roots on the plant in the spring? Thanks for these care instructions. This is my first one, Fredclarkera After Dark. I didn’t achieve a bloom spike this year. Maybe next year.

I started to add Korean subtitles recently. I'm glad the subtitles are helpful! Ask me any questions you have about Catasetum as they arise.

Ya, seems like next week's storm coming your way won't help dry things off either!! Send some of that water over here!! 😂
Hello!
It's been rather chilly here lately and my two Catasetum hybrids show no signs yet. Let's see when they feel like getting ready for dormancy
The chill should help them make a decision about sleep, probably fairly quickly!

You can start letting the young one dry fully between watering instead of keeping it wet all the time, which is typical for the growing season.
I’m in California and it’s still hot. Where does the spike come from? The bottom?
For Catasetums, the spike will come from the base of the plant
Was that a Brassavola you have in bloom, at the end of the shelf? Also looked like you had an orange and purple orchid in bloom?
Good eye! That's a nodosa and a faded Cattleya bicolor
Can we repot it in Fall
No, better to wait until the plant wakes up in spring
