Making a Russian Rose Part 2

  • The second and final part of my take on the Russian Rose. In this part I forge out the petals, wrap them around the stem and add a bit of life to the finished piece.
    It's destined for the better half of another TH-cam Blacksmith, Daniel Moss, I hope she'll like it :)

    Very nice work, Ian. And with your mod to the usual with making the petals ROUND the bottom edge closes up nicely for a more finished, professional look. I like this version a lot. Thanks for sharing this with us. I am certain she will love it.

    Beginning "Metal Mangler" here. I have watched a good half a dozen or more vids on how to do this, in the last few days. Your rose is by far the best looking one I've seen, yet. It does take a little more effort than the others, but the results are worth it from what I can see. Just curious, have you ever attempted to just fuller from the top, with a narrower(x 1/2) fuller?

    Looks fantastic I want to try and do that to but I don't think it'll turn out as good lol

      The first one I ever tried to make was truly heinous and i do mean shockingly bad. I kept burning or breaking off the petals (too hot, too thin, too cold etc) so ended up chasing my way down the bar making more till the 'stem' was about three inches long in the end. The look on my teachers face as he dropped it into 'the bucket of shame', with a disdainful finger and thumb, was priceless. lol
      I was sad when I heard Willem had gone, he was a great Blacksmith. Luckily the one here has another fourteen or so years behind it so it escaped the bin.
      Best advice I can give you is to try making one from smaller bar stock for your first try. Scale everything down, the forging work is still essentially the same and you'll waste less materials and energy getting the 'feel' for them.
      Thank you for the kind words, I'm pleased you like it.

    Cracking work Ian. I’ve seen these done with a one sided divot if you like but not this way. Definitely looks better like this. Will be giving this a go when I get back to the workshop. All the best

      Cheers Andy, they're not a quick forging to do (the video is mostly 3x speed) but I really like them, send me a pic if you give one a go :)

      Ian Lowe Will do bud. Will try and do a video if I get time. I don’t have a Blacksmiths helper though. Will have to build one or make some flypress tooling. Cheers

    • @ianlowe4666
      @ianlowe4666  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can do them with a spring swage Andy, just bend up a bit of round bar with the radius you want and weld to a square shank for the hardy, if that makes sense? Under the flypress will work well too, just be careful of not getting too aggressive, they can bulge out so when you flatten them the edges roll over and make a cold shut that can snap if you aren't steady away with the heats. That's why you see me rolling the edge under the guillotine tool/ Blacksmith helper and selectively quenching as I move down the row.

      Gotcha. Cheers Ian. I'll have a play when I get ashore and find some time. Looking forward to the next video. All the best
