Tree Sign Build Part Four
Opening up the splits on the lower and upper branches.
After splitting the 60mm x 15mm limbs with a 9 1/2 inch grinder they now need opening up so we fire up the Swan to make the job easier.
I show a few ways of opening up the splits, but all start with the vice and hot cut.
I also show the leg brace a commenter asked about previously. My balance is compromised without a walking stick, making forge work difficult to say the least, the brace allows me to basically lock a leg in place under my own weight and then lean against it. It does nothing for my nerve pain but it's still been a game changer as ugly as it is.

Tree Sign Build Part Three

Cuting the veins into the small and large leaves that will act as the sign post 'arrows' or 'pointers'. Apologies to those who've already watched the original edit of this video, I found some additional footage of veining one of the larger leaves that I thought was worth including to show hoe both sizes were done.

Bargain Blacksmithing Leather Apron
มุมมอง 2904 ปีที่แล้ว
I'm not one for 'product reviews' or 'unboxing' video's but I am Northern, and we allegedly invented copper wire fighting over pennies so whenever I see a good buy or a bargain I'm on it like a bad rash. This, I believe, is a genuine bargain for makers from the juggernaut that is Amazon.

Love Heart Candlesticks: Gas Vs Coke
มุมมอง 2346 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone. Been a while since the last video so this one is bumper sized. Grab a drink and nibbles and enjoy. I made two identical candlesticks, one using my coke forge and the other my Swan gas forge. There are pro's and cons to both but I think in terms of sheer flexibility a solid fuel forge is hard to beat.
Making a Russian Rose Part 2
มุมมอง 4.4K6 ปีที่แล้ว
The second and final part of my take on the Russian Rose. In this part I forge out the petals, wrap them around the stem and add a bit of life to the finished piece. It's destined for the better half of another TH-cam Blacksmith, Daniel Moss, I hope she'll like it :)
Making a Russian Rose Pt 1
มุมมอง 2.6K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's the first part of my take on the 'Russian Rose'. This is an intermediate level project and can be a challenging forging for the novice, but I think they are well worth the effort in either case. In this part I rough out the forging for the petals and draw down the stem to finish.
How to make a 'J' hook
มุมมอง 4066 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's how I make my 'J' Hooks. The processes can be done in a couple of ways and don't have to follow the order presented here. Better to look at each stage individually. I will say that a solid fuel fire will help with focusing the heats where needed more easily than with a gas forge, but the gas forge is excellent for batch work Enjoy.

    • @ianlowe4666

Thank you very much Wayne. The 'Hofi' style of swing is a perfectly good one, it's not hard on the body and once you build up the flexibility and strength in the wrist to make the most of it can really give you a lot of bang for your buck. The whip style does the same thing just in a different way. As long as the heavy bit meets the hot bit without causing you any damage it's all good.

Thank you James. I'm glad if it proved helpful, it's really just meant to be a starting point to go forwards from. Considering we are essentially throwing a weight on a stick about it's surprising how many different ways Smiths do it, and poke fun at each other regarding it (I worked with Uri when he was at Ironbridge, he's hilarious btw) If you think it would help folks feel free to share a link to it on Facebook, I'll brace myself. Some of the groups there are just overly toxic tbh, barring the current notable exception of the 'Forge it Forward' page. I like what they're doing.

..at about 6:10 the reverse/reverse taper begins. That is a Very Nice Piece !! Are they Candled Bookends or just Candle holders?? Either way it's Very Good design...!!!

I'm glad you like it James, I did consider that the design would lend itself well to a bookend use, and also as a centre piece (in a pair) for a table setting but I'm afraid no smarty pants award for you. That reverse/reverse was a genuine cock up on my part I had to fix. Keep looking! :)

If anyone can spot the 'deliberate' mistake in this one you win an official smarty pants award. I'll need the time stamp of the mistake though. What's the betting there will be a lot of different answers? :)
