  • This is a how-to video for troubleshooting trailer wiring issues and trailer brake issues. I dealt with the "Trailer Wiring Fault" error message for months and compiled all the possible solutions I'd suggest to someone who has a ghost problem with trailer brakes. This video will walk through how to test trailer brakes. If you have any questions, place them in the comments section.

2018 Imagine 2150rb I had the same issue, it turned out to be the wire s going through the axle! Replaced that absolutely no more error codes!

@TLR5759, great find! Did you run your new wires through the axel or zip tie them to the outside?

Hopefully that holds up for you. Still frustrating that Grand Design has these type of design flaws.

I have a 2022 Silverado and a 2022 Cruiser Twilight Signature travel trailer. Got this message intermittently. Both dealers couldn’t find the problem. Finally the camper dealer heard a noise near one of the wheels. They jacked up the camper and took off the brake cover. Parts literally fell out. The magnet was loose and flopped around, causing an intermittent wiring fault. They replaced all 4 electric brake assemblies under warranty. Your problem may be different, but this worked for me and you may wish to look into this.

@davidtrost4117, wow that's hard to believe a new camper would have problems like that but guess any rig needs the kinks worked out. A friend of mine suggested that could be our problem. Our problem turned out to be bad wire routing when it was built. Our electrical brake wire was between the flooring and frame and was pinched off after rough roads through New York and Connecticut. Glad you were able to resolve the issue under warranty!

Having the same issue with my 2019 Grand Design 2800BH. So was it the floor pinching issue causing the fault? Drive my through the mountains in the rain had me on high alert without those breaks.

@snovak1, yes the issue was the pinched wire between the floor and frame. I bet it was hairy, I hate driving without trailer brakes. Here's the product I used, make sure to measure your length from the trailer plug junction box to the axels and down. 10AWG Duplex marine grade wire 20ft

I’m having the same problem with the Large Orange Box that states “WIRING FAULT ON TRAILER”. On page 297/666on the manual it states this: This can be a short to ground (such as a chaffed wire), short to voltage (such as a pulled pin on trailer emergency breakaway battery) or the trailer brakes may be drawing too much current. Points to Remember Note: Do not attempt removal of the trailer brake controller without consulting the Workshop Manual. The problem is the too much current statement, but No number is given after much research I found a Ford policy # Ford DTC B148A:11 that policy set the max brake control to 27 amps. The problem started when I towed the triple axle trailer with 6 brakes home for the first time and the Orange Warning Light came on displaying “WIRING FAULT ON TRAILER” in Feb 2021 after much time and effort and having the trailer checked out by a trailer repair place; no short was found. So I’m now buying a tool to show that the current limit is too low and needs to be raised. When towing, the engine is running which means the alternator is also running the DC could be as high as 14.8 volts when you have 6 brakes in parallel the resistance could be as low as .5 ohms. 15 V divided by .50 ohms = 30 amps. 30 amps will trip a current limit of 27 amps and display the Orange Box every time it exceeds 27 Amps.

@patpowles3358, I wonder if your problem could be bypassed using FORScan. I don't have experience with it yet but I want to start using it on my truck. You could turn the module on and off with it to reset it and possibly tune your voltage limit. I don't know for a fact on the voltage limit adjustment.

Do you know of a truck that's rated for a 16,000 trailer with a tongue weight of 2,000 lbs, the Ford controller doesn't really work below 18 mph

I would try plugging the trailer into a friends truck first to determine if it's really the truck or trailer. Also if you have another trailer you could try plugging your truck in and testing it that way too. This way you can determine which one has the issue first. Those controllers are not cheap. Are you having any error messages pop up on your truck?
