    I'm a reasonably intelligent person and I've never studied anything to do with engineering before. Jeff, your channel and the Building Integrity channel are the only ones worth watching on this subject. I think some other channels just popped up and tried to capitalize on this tragedy.

No doubt, early on, somebody left a scathing review for Kyle, comparing him to great TH-cam content creators like Jeff. Kyle's childish tantrums give off little "d" energy.

I have no experience in construction and I live across the country from the incident (in LA), but I've always been curious about building collapses in general and have been following the Champlain Towers collapse because of this. Your channel and Building Integrity's are the best at it since you two take an investigative approach and explain with reason and logic on how the building may have collapsed without stating that it's the absolute smoking gun that brought it down. The two of you, that is you and Building Integrity, disseminate the information in a clean way so that those that aren't familiar with the situation or with the concepts can easily understand and follow. Another reputable, non controversial, TH-cam engineer did a complete analysis and calculations of the original building plans and concluded that he felt the building plans met the only the minimal structural requirements. If the contractor "cut corners" (we don't know that that happened), combined with all the other know issues with the building, the added weight from remodeling could definitely be of the 100 contributing factors that played into the building failure.

    • @johnbergstrom2931
      @johnbergstrom2931 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, the developer definitely did, in my opinion. This Nathan Reiber (who conveniently died in 2014) was known for cutting corners, bribing contractors and inspectors to do the absolute minimum on his projects. As for the remodeling, it wasn't the cause. Units were remodeled multiple times in the 40 years the building was standing and that weight is taken into account by the architect/structural engineer. No, it was corrosion and massive neglect that ultimately killed those 98 people.

    I have been involved in site work for 35 years. There is only one way that I would plant or remove those palm trees, over the wall. The trees and a large boom lift go over the wall using a mobile crane. Boom lifts have integrated lifting points for situations like this. Small boom lifts or especially scissor lifts that will fit through the gates do not have enough power to stand up AND lift those trees. Removal is much harder than planting in this case. Scissor lifts were surely used for pruning over the years. None of this should has led to collapse, provided the structure is sound. My questions are, is there documentation on any modification to the pool deck over the years and can it be determined if the water proof membrane was compromised or effective.

  • @robertporter2447
    @robertporter2447 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As a retired contractor my first thought was the new type of products used in remodeling. Back when this building was built everything was light weight such as Formica tops, linoleum, lite weight carpet and spray on deck finishes. Over time all that marble floors and counter tops, pavers on pool deck and planters just to mention a few added a lot of extra downforce witch the building was not made for. How many new layers of roofing, newer bigger AC units, this stuff adds up fast. Plus they added that penthouse on top!. This was just a mater of time before it failed.

      That’s what every professor, architect, construction guy said into a microphone the first few days after the collapse. But alleged construction people are commenting now that the deck should have been more independent from the building. Seeming to suggest that the deck collapsing effected the building. They even had that garage-level beam tying the building column more tightly to the deck column which was at one of the deck collapse spots.

    I was not aware who Kai was until a recent TH-cam video suggestion, which ended up being the rant on plagiarism.
    What needs to be remembered is people have died here. This should not evolved into a childish pissing competition over who thought of something first. It simply doesn't matter. Open discussing, brainstorming and shared knowledge and resources are what it seemed to about until the 'plagiarism' video. How sad. I can even state I agree with a comment Kai made: that the removing the debris happened way too fast for an investigation that is expected to take months or even years. Once the 'evidence' had been moved and possibly damaged / compromised, there is a good chance lawyers get those who should be found guilty to walk free.

    Thanks for another great video, Jeff!
    It was mentioned in the comments to your "palm tree" video that the wide front gate was the likely way that equipment would have come onto the pool deck, rather than the narrow back gate. A commenter named "Smokr" added another (I think) possibly important point -- when the trees were cut, the most logical thing to do would have been to haul the pieces over to the south (87th Terrace) side to pass them out to the street. (Smokr seemed to have personal knowledge that it was done that way, but it just makes sense anyhow). That would require the equipment to go back and forth repeatedly over the exact area of the pool deck that collapsed. The same thing would have happened, as you show in this new video, when they were hauling in the pavers and sand. Repeated (albeit short-term) stress to that same area.
    This possible stress on that particular part of the deck is maybe an explanation of why THAT area collapsed (basically under its own weight, including the weight of the added sand and pavers), while other areas of the pool deck did NOT collapse even after substantial amounts of debris from the collapsed building landed on them. (For example, the area between the pool and the collapsed structure seems to have stayed up). Otherwise, it would seem odd that the EMPTIEST part of the pool deck was the part that collapsed.
    Of course none of this may mean anything -- plenty of other factors conceivably might also explain it.
    These ideas are free for the whole world to use, even Kai.

Both you and BI explained in better details that everyone understand your point of view and were never stressing the root cause to beginning with, quick and simple and no nonsense. Kai’s videos are so lengthy at times plus his high pitch voice is not making it easy. Showing physically by using live samples explaining his theories. Showing the detail floor plans going through the numbers labelled and explaining how much he knows about structure engineering which doesn’t really make it easy to understand what he is really trying to achieve in the videos. End up I deduce that is just showing he knows structure engineering work explaining the flaws in the building plan. If so, he can be the detective and go through other floor plans in Miami building and check if is agreeable for him and raise all the possible red flags, then nobody can challenge him as he is the first to do so.

    The complaint of "Plagiarism" is ridiculous and childish. Plagiarism refers to academic, copyrighted material, including original ideas which are published and used by another for their own gain without citing it 's original source/author. All of you engineers are presenting your theories of what caused the collapse, but nothing definitive. Nothing is published, nothing is copyrighted. Theories and suppositions only. A TH-cam channel isn't a copyrighted platform so I would ignore those claims Jeff. Kai has no clue about plagiarism which is obvious. All of you have used material which has been uploaded online, photos, docs, architect plans, violations, etc. and you all have a different point of view. None are members of the investigative team. I come back to this a week later, after not just calculating how much extra weight could have been added to each condom that had major renovations done in the past decade or so that actually took this building from just the average middle class apartment type unit to what they wanted these condo to be seen as, luxury beach front property. Not only were owners upgrading their unit to sell for a much greater amount, this seems to have been kicked off by a real-estate group that early on bought up a number of units, some at foreclosure and others just for sale at very low prices considering what they then turned around and sold for, so one assumes there had to have been a lot of upgrades and updates to materials.
    I am not clear if this was originally built as an apartment complex where units were rented then converted by the building owners to condos and units were sold or if these were always condos.
    Two glaring things jump out at me and that was the upgrade and updating done to the lobby, which it appears that this was done in all public corridors too, the application of marble flooring and wall facings, and while you remark on how much weight was just added in the lobby area, how about al the additional weight added on each floor as corridors and common areas were renovated to rank with the idea of 'luxury'.
    Also, from what I see in the original plans and later plans there was the penthouse, constructed at a later date that was not original to the building. What appears to be missing in what calculations I can find that show how much more weight bearing that the original building could take, each flurry of major upgrades seemed to fail to take into account additional weight that has been added at other times with other updates and changes. Such as the weight of adding the penthouse was based on the original structure, as were the updates to lobby and corridors and public areas that did not account for the addition of weight bearing that the building was then currently at after the addition of the penthouse. And as units were renovated with much heavier materials the allowed renovations seem to have been based on the original weight per until without any adjustments from the original because of what had already been added to the roof, aka penthouse, as well as to corridors and public areas. And there seemes to have been no structural retrofitting considered or even noticed as something that might be needed if they had been considering all that was added as more was added.
    I am not saying that renovation stress brought the building down, but if the building structure was holding up a great deal more weight than it was originally been built to hold, would that not explain why the building did not stop falling with the first section collapsing and just hanging on there at least long enough to save lives. Could it not be that the building, while whole even if overweight held together for the years it did because buildings are built to stay up even under a great deal of stress but all it took was the loss of one part to cause the additional weight that the building was never designed to hold to not stop at the loss of the first section, but when that section did go, only because it was there the second section went, and same with the third and forth, not because the section that went before it was puling that next section over but because once that section went removing structure that was actually keeping it standing against the extra weight it was trying to support, it then fell. I other words, due to all the additional weight added to the building over the years in some manner those sections 2-3 were already falling but were held up because of the design of the building an the pool deck and the first section. When other factors took those parts away, it was a foregone conclusion that the rest was going to come down. If this was the case, its very possible that an engineer would not have known this as an issue when inspecting unless they went back and started looking at all the permits granted and what was done and added during those renovations, calculated how much might have been added by DIY renovations where permits were never applied for.
    And when one notices that the portion of the building that was trying its best to do as the rest for the building should have done and remained upright, even though it too had has addition weights from materials used to renovate units and public areas and corridors the added weight of a penthouse was not on that side of the building.
    I know building codes differ greatly from area to area, but it seems unheard of that basically on one part of the building what amounted to an additional floor was added to the section that collapsed without any addition structural work done and what was added as the penthouse in weight does not seem to have been included in any way when permits were approved allowing for what seems to be the same weight allowance per condo as in the original calculations. It seems like common sense that if they wanted the weight allowances for each unit tp remain the same as the penthouse was added, so too has there been some updated/upgraded structural work done to retrofit that section of the building to actually accommodate that additional floor, or as later permits were taken out for unit renovations on the penthouse side of the building the weight of the materials to be added needed to be less to reflected the additional weight on that side of the building from adding a the penthouse on top of the roof.

    Isn't it possible to find out what company removed the palm trees, and couldn't they solve the mystery, of the equipment used?

      YES!! Do you think that info would be found in the HOA reports? Seems to me it should be discoverable info!

    The content here is well-reasoned and clearly well-informed, and it's good to see such high-level commentary on the tragedy of Champlain Towers South. It seems entirely reasonable that retro-fitting much heavier fittings to the majority of the apartments could contribute to the collapse of a compromised structure which wasn't specified for such gross additions to effective 'live weight'; is the specified live weight of the building known, and can the weight of the newer, heavier fittings be estimated? Thanks, and don't feed the trolls - your time is better spent providing informed comment - there are those who recognise and appreciate it, and who also have the discrimination to ignore the crap that trolls spout!

    The palm tree theory is rock solid. Removing the trees would ease the camber on the deck adding stress on the columns that failed. I’m a carpenter not an engineer and the moment you described the weight removed and the machinery required to remove, I thought this is a major cause of the collapse.

      It became rants. He complained that the whole thing was a coverup and that NIST was botching the investigation because they were hauling away debris. Did he expect them to let those bodies just decay and decompose? It became bizarre.

    Jeff, I think you have presented a very accurate and fact-based approach as to what may have been a factor in this terrible tragedy. I have sincerely appreciated your thoroughness and professionalism in your research of this event. I think you have uncovered some of the best evidence available to date and your possible theories are right on target, excellent work.
    Don't listen to the uninformed out there, such as the recent baseless attacks, (that guy is out to lunch in a big way so don't waste your time).
    Thank you very much, Jeff, keep up the outstanding work.

    Hi Jeff. Maybe he doesn’t have engineers who actually watch him? And usually engineers don’t have time to troll on the internet. Mechanical Engineer here (Florida Institute of Technology) and certified fluid power specialist. Your coverage has been a month long step by step problem solving analysis. Engineers generally have the scientific method ingrained so we don’t even have to think about the steps. We just do them. Sorry you have trolls but I doubt many or any of them are engineers or construction managers. Keep up the great work!
