It’s cool to see videos about older games. Lots of us have them collecting dust on our shelves. These vids remind us of why we loved them in the first place. I only buy about 1 new game a year these days so I’m not too interested in the latest hyped games.
Great video. Might apply a few of these. My partner and I play with 2 investigators each. We typically pick investigators at random because choosing you typically choose the same ones. So we grab the deck. Roll a D6 whatever we roll we then roll that amount of dice count the number. Then split the deck into two piles as we count. When we reach said number we choose to accept or pass, if you pass then we turn one more over and you must play with that one. Then shuffle the now 3 piles together. Sometimes we choose one and play one at random. Lead Investigator token is a great idea We also take used cards and monsters out each play through to keep it fresh. I've split the asset pile into 5 decks. Items, trinkets, tasks, service, ally. Roll a D6. 1 for assets, 2 for trinkets etc and a 6 also for items because its the biggest pile. Works for us. Although Darrell becomes a little awkward. Reading encounters the game rules dont set it as a rule but encourage it. So we've done it from the beginning. Delayed idea is one we never thought of, its never bothered us because we play 2 handed so we never felt like we "missed a turn" The spells idea is a really good one, certainly makes them more exciting. We have ours seperated into 3 seperate decks of ritual, incantation and glamour so the shuffling shouldn't be too bad. Doom hitting 0 is also a great idea because like you stated, we often just forefeit. At least this makes it worth giving a shot without taking hours. Impairment and removing certian cards? Hmmm maybe the impairment one. And disasters on the doom track? My my... I'll not show this to my partner because she absolutely loves the disaster cards. Sounds like misery. But I'd be up for it. Lately we've been using staged difficulty. We find it a lot more fun. Stage 1 snowflake cards but with 1 normal blue card. Stage 2 normal cards but with one hard mythos card then stage 3 all hard cards but we start with one snowflake blue card to keep the challenege present at the beginning. We've yet to try nightmare difficulty using all hard mythos cards.
I like the idea of exchanging the spell cards after casting with another one of the same type and shuffling in the used card first to have a chance to get the same.
Letting other players read the encounter cards for the active player is very important. Makes the game a lot better! Not knowing what is coming, adds a lot to the game. Sometimes as an exception it can help to give the active player a rough hint what the consequences are or if it might be worth to use up extra resources to pass a test.
Superb video! EH is my all-time favorite game. These are really great suggestions. I’ve incorporated some of them, but all of these are fantastic Thanks for this!
Nice rules! Our group has actually been playing with the Rule #6 all along, it works really great. When we read a card for another player, we usually paraphrase it or add some narrative details which fit the emerging story, or sometimes add some jokes. This makes the game really fun to play, and the encounter phase is always exciting.
I am going to watch this now, but you are fiddling with my favorite game .... I am a little concerned. 🤨 : You guys are great, I would love to somehow play this game with you sometime .... even though I am in the United States ..... We follow most of your ideas already. But I like the Elder One Awakening and the Disaster ideas, we may try those. We pick one random investigator, no mulligans. This forces us to use different play styles, and get creative if we get a 'weak' investigator.
@@scottdyk5819 We also pick random most of the time. Unless we decide to give the campaign a shot, which we'll definitely choose who to play. But typically we pick a random number from dice rolls. Then we play as that Investigator, or we have the option of pass. But you must play as the next one. Sometimes we choose one and go one random too (we play as 2 investigators each). We sometimes get surprised by how well certain ones perform. But more often than not it leads to poor team synergy that ultimately ends in a loss. But when we do pull that win off it's amazing!
I need to get this game to the table again. I’ve only got base game and forsaken lore. We usually did a draft for characters every game lol the awakening thing sounds good tho. I also like the store idea. That’s so good, I’ll need to implement that
My favourite game. I'm not a big fan on making it easier for the sake of it being easier, but #5 separate asset piles actually makes more thematic sense, of course you'd head to the local pub to make a new "friend" The question is, is 10pm a bit late to start setting up for a quick game...
@@TonyMorel it's a little late but let's admit it. There's much more destructive things you could be doing to your life so what's the harm? If anything, set it up and it's there ready for tomorrow
Ohhhh i got all the expansions but havent played this game in over half a decade. Now i feel like going through a campaign with this. We always play with step up difficulty (phase 1 frost, phase 2 normal, phase 3 tentacles) - not a house rule, just a variant.
I actually have this on the table with forsaken lore to play through one more time before I considered selling it. Think I'll try all your rules and maybe it will stick around 😀
Nice video, I might try 3-4 of them, the rest are things that never really bothered me, but it is good that everyone can pick and choose. Also it seems I always played the delayed effect wrong :D.
I have used only #12 for my games as prolonging such long games is never fun. Rule #13 sounds fun as well just not sure that we need more issues on the board ;) as we usually play more thematic rather than for the win (to win some characters might just farm items and sit in Tokyo to deal with monsters).
@@andoru to be honest I might do this too. We played a game where the first 2 mysteries were epic monsters which was tough. Then the last one was basically do 4 research encounters. Which was pretty anti climatic.
Is it possible to do a rule on which you just do 2 misteries instead of 3 and reduce in 1/3 the doom track? This in order to make the game quicker. Will it impact any core mechanic? Cheers!
@@davidelourenco2537 can't see why you can't do that. But one issue being if you use the personal mission cards that come with the last expansion a good chunk of the missions are "When doom reaches 6 or lower reveal your consequences" so it would be pretty detrimental in that regard especially against Atlach Nacha. You'd start on 6.
My first thought on this is that you might want to give the characters some sort of "head start" in getting some equipment or skill development if you're reducing the total game length. The first part of most of my games focuses on players trying to get weapons, spells, or enhancing abilities, and if you're aiming to cut 1/3 of the time, you might want to start with one weapon/spell/equipment card and 1 skill boost (or something like that).
@@alistairsmith2901 thanks for that info. In my case I only have the first expansion and third small ones. So probably it can work. I'll try this weekend. Cheers!
Anyone got suggestions on the campaign? We've wanted to try it but 6 sequential games, assuming you win seems like a bit of a slog and apart from the prelude rule doesnt seem to change things up. Also does anyone score their games by using the core box ruleset. We still do but feel its a bit outdated with having all the expansions. Theres a lot more that could be used to modify the score.

Great video. I will suggest that for dice pile selection you can roll a single d6 and strike numbers above 4 from the result for less faffing about.

A lot of these tips are awesome I particularly like the assets one as that's so easy to implement
For assets, 1 = non magical/tome items + weapons (including magical/relic weapons), 2 = allies, 3 = services + tasks, 4 = tomes, trinkets, relics, magical items (no weapons even if magical).

If the first mystery card is to defeat an epic monster, I draw another one and put the old one on top of the deck.

Whats the disaster number for rise of elder things? Not on the chart.
Edit: 11,8,5,2
