I loved that you talked about my mad fat Diary. It one of my favorites tv shows. I started watching that show when I 15. I struggle with my own issues at the time. I related to Rae alot. I'm 22 now. It still one of my favorite shows.

Such an underrated show. The writing was so solid that first season, as was the acting. As a bigger girl who has struggled with mental health, binge eating and suicidal ideation, it literally felt like watching a show about me in a lot of ways, and that is something I had never had before (or really found since).

Dude, Sharon Rooney is such an underrated, amazingly talented actress. I am so upset she hasn't gotten more recognition.(she still works, smaller tv roles here and there, but I want so much more from her- she has range, if only given a chance) Now, this is not meant to take away anything from Jodie, she's brilliant aswell; however, of the two she's blown up immensely over the last few years, wish the same could happen with Sharon.

I’ve been saying this for years, Jodie was and is fantastic but Sharon deserves the same career trajectory and it’s upsetting she’s doing bit parts (and Barbie)

The characters (writing and acting) are incredibly well done in MMFD. So glad you have done a video on this. First watched this when I was 14 and have done a couple of rewatches since (now 26). I find it fascinating how my perspective of the characters has evolved over the years. I used to hate Rae's Mum but now I really sympathise with her. There are also definitely some things that I knew were off or wrong at the time, but I now recognise as messed up and predatory as an adult.
Also it's so good to see Sharon Rooney and Jodie Comer grow their careers since this because I remember thinking they needed way more recognition for their performances here.

    • @kaleidoscopequeen2401
      @kaleidoscopequeen2401 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +19

@@CcC-ct9tb she is 100% a victim. Took me a long time to see it but she is as much of a victim as Rae is. Yes Chloe grew up with both parents present in her life, a nice house, wealthy etc. But that didn’t prevent her from engaging in inappropriate relationships with older/abusive men. Chloe struggled with body image just as much as Rae did. Yes she was fortunate to have the “perfect” body but that doesn’t stop the pressure a lot of young women are under to look and be perfect. That pressure leads to women feeling as if they are competing with each other for male affection/attention. It’s not as evident in the first season but definitely in the latter 2.

This show singlehandedly saved my life. I watched it when I was 14 and almost 10 years later I still constantly think about it. It sucks that it got a rushed ending, but I remember how at the time I didn't get it at all. And now it makes So much sense. I'm really happy this was the teenage show I decided to watch, the way it delt with the same issues other shows tried to was very sensible and responsible. I also read the first book when I was 18 and it's really beautiful too. I nv see anyone talk about it so thank you so much ♡ This show deserves more recognition

New favorite youtuber!!!! I cannot stand secondhand embarrassment, but there is also nothing I love more than messy, realistic depictions of teenage girls. This is how I get my fix lol.
You explained a lot of the nuances of Rae and Chloe's relationship beautifully.
It reminded me a lot of my own childhood best friend. Looking back at old messages, the literal only way I can describe our friendship was volatile, which was shocking because it didn't feel that way at all.

Ahhhhhhh 😆 I’ve been WAITNG AND DREAMING of a video tht covers this series. When I was in the throws of my eating d!$order and depression I loved this series. As a former fat girl I related so much to Rae and loved almost every minute of the show. Even though I had lost the weight on the inside I was still my former fat self, insecure and hating every ounce of my being especially my physical appearance. This show is so special to me because of how real it is in showing the struggles of teenage hood and being a fat girl. Which I’ve never experienced in another show EVER, I have yet to come across a show quite like this one. Thank you for making this video ❤ and if anyone has any show recommendations that are like this pls reply to me. I might post another comment once I’m done cuz I don’t wanna come back to edit this one 😂

23:28 I don’t think she was assuming Rae didn’t wanna be friends. I feel like she was threatening to end the friendship as a form of avoidance. Avoidance of accountability and rejection. Like a panic response.

I absoloutely loved this show so much, I felt like the first time I was ever understood in my life, seeing an underdog as the main character and showing her love interests was amazing. I was diagnosed with OCD around two years later and I loved how they portrayed OCD without specifying what it was because it took me a while to figure it out or even know what it was, I loved how open the real Rae Earl was about it all too.

so glad people are finally talking about mmfd like this. i first watched this when it first came out when i was 13 and it meant so much to me as a mentally ill teenager going through what rae was going through. it was the first time i saw mental illness not portrayed romantically and had the lead be someone who looks like sharon rooney, someone i saw myself in. its still a comfort show for me, despite now being mentally stable and able to cope with life 's struggles. when i watch the show now, instead of relating it to how im feeling currently, i think back to that young girl i once was and i think about how far ive come. rae finds this herself in the third season, so it feels like we both made it to the other side which is full of stability, confidence, and joy. this is still one of my favorite shows of all time and i highly recommend it. its such an important piece of media and im so thankful it was created.

I always felt sad when Rae referred to Chloe as her "best friend" 'cause I was like "gurl, that is NOT your best friend, that is a person you hang out with". Chloe is a TERRIBLE friend. I think she does SOMETIMES mean well...like, in the first example you show, she's technically just telling Rae the truth...but in a really tactless way, hurtful way.

I deeply love this show, i saw it for the very first time when it was coming out, by randomly watching channel 4 uk (i'm from Argentina so i had to fight my way into finding streams to watch the channel live). I got hooked and saw the entire first season.
The show came into my life at a point were i was feeling very low, struggling with my own mental health plus a whole bunch of family issues.
It truly helped me see things differently, including taking accountability for my own responsability in my self destruction, and it gave me hope and put me into gear, making better choices.
By the end of that year my life had done a full 180 and it has been uphill since then. I honestly cannot say enough good things about My Mad Fat Diary, it is sad that not many channels cover this show, thank you for this video!!

Such a great show. I had a much different experience re-watching this as an adult than when I was a teenager going through similar experiences with body image and self confidence. No show in the US really captured that for me. I thought Chloe was a terrible friend, but now I see they weren’t too different. Similar experiences on opposite sides of the spectrum. Currently rewatching on Hulu!! I remember watching it on TH-cam back in the day! Anyway, great video!

Absolutely one of my favourite series ever! There's a show called 'everything now' on netflix that tries to do basically the same story as my mad fat diary and it falls so flat. Nothing can live up to my mad fat diary. Its so raw and real and intriguing. As a teen girl, we can really live through and relate to Rae, whos going through the same thinga as us.
I also really love that aspect of Rae always envying Chloe and wanting to be her, thinking shes the perfect person, but Chloe reversing that and thinking the same thing about Rae. How nothing is ever enough. And them maintaining their friendship even through all their fights and jealousy.
Additionally, the mother-daughter relationship. Same thing as above, how at the end of the day, they still love each other after every awful thing thats happened between them.

I never watched Mad Fat Diary, I was too young to be the target audience when it was originally airing, and I was put off immediately because of my own issues with my weight and appearance. Even watching this video I keep catching myself on some of the assumptions I make and internalise. Its nice to be able to learn what it was about and how it seems like its actually good representation of teenagers struggling with mental illness and issues with their weight. I probably won't ever watch the actual show, but I'm looking forward to part 2 :)

I wouldn't say there's "Body Dysmorphia" as BD is someone very fixated on either non-existent flaws or very minor flaws that SEEM significant to them, whereas Rae actually IS severely overweight. It would only be BD is she was either a normal weight, or very slightly overweight and saw herself as obese, but she's actually an obese person who see's herself as obese.
100% correct on the eating disorder part, though, she clearly has BED.
