I’m 33 and loved this movie as a young girl! They need to play this movie now with what’s going on. This film as well as Sarafina the movie meant a lot to me growing up
This ending is powerful for two reasons: 1. Mahree has finally seen the environment she's been brought up in from another perspective. 2. In real life, "Piper" speculates that "Mahree" went back to join anti-Apartheid efforts but never heard from her again, meaning that it was quite likely she was killed or jailed.
@Beth black given South Africa's situation in the 1970s and 1980s, that's probably true. Has the Truth and Reconciliation Committee reached that conclusion though?
Mahree, who was actually named Carrie, helped form the first anti-apartheid student underground movement, but speculation arose she was arrested for organizing. According to Congressman Dellums, she wrote letters to him asking for assistance, but communications suddenly ceased. After attempts to reach her though official channels failed after Mandela was released, the family assumed she was killed as a result of her activism.
As a kid I didn’t understand or know the context of this but I understood it as it was presented to me and I’m all the more happy Disney wasn’t afraid to show this to kids. You couldn’t make a movie for kids about apartheid these days.
This movie came out the year I was born, in 2000. But I didn't actually see it until I was probably about 14 years old, for the first time! Now I'm 17 years old, wishing I could go back to the 00's. The 00's were such a great decade! The ending makes me cry for some reason, idky. But this is also nostalgic.
I saw this movie nonstop it came out when I was 5 in 2000 It's one of my favorite childhood movies when I was 5 still is I love the movie Someday when me and my boyfriend Chris might as well get married and have a family (6 kids) together we might have a foreign exchange student in our house someday He said We could get a female one from Japan I'd love that
How is it that High School Musical became one of the most popular DCOMSs ever, while “Color of Friendship” was all but forgotten about? Don’t get me wrong, I love HSM, but still.
Next year marks the 25th anniversary of the first DCOM, I am proposing the idea of a weeklong celebration of that milestone. Unveiling the 25 greatest DCOMS of all time in a weeklong celebration by vote
I remember watching the very end of this movie as a kid. I didn’t know what it was about but by from the look of the ending it must’ve been amazing. If only Disney made TV movies like this again, now they’re all about money.
I actually wondered what happened after this movie. Sadly, the girl doesn't know what happened due to losing contact... and it's likely she was killed. :'(
+Terestrasz Yeah I just found that out too...Piper lose contact with the girl she was housing, whose name was Carrie, and she thinks that she was beaten to death or 'disappeared' like a lot of anti- apartheid citizens :(
epilogue shoulda mentioned how da comprehensive anti-apartheid act was vetoed by President Reagan but overturned, it was da first successfully overturned veto on presidential foreign policy in modern American history.
I wish everyone that support the Black life matters, All life matter, and All colors matter, I wish they see this video and think about this heartwarming story
Damn, so apparently Piper’s real name was Carrie & she helped form the first anti-apartheid student underground movement when she returned to South Africa. She was jailed, asked Rep. Dellums for help, then contact with her was cut & they never heard from her again.

I never saw this movie though I have heard of the "After School" specials. I found out about this one because of a different After School Special I was reading about on the internet/ . This is based on a true story? It seems overly mellow-dramatic. Very political too. Of course it is nicely done for a sentimental movie. Yet if it is trying to present a political point, it is one sided.
@@orangexylem That's the thing. Such people really don't want to look at things reasonably. Just want to be stuck on their own biases and/or comfort zone of bigotry.
I'm 23 and I remember watching and loving this movie when I was a little kid. It's nice seeing a much younger generation enjoy this film as well.
That's how old I am & I used to watch this movie as a kid as well

Beth black What do you mean by “necklaced” and are your talking about Mahree or Piper?
That is what makes this movie heartbreaking.

@Beth black necklaced into what ?
This movie taught me HUGE things while my brain was still molding and that ending always gets me

Now that I’m older I realize how damn deep this movie is! Good stuff man.
yeah I know right it was a good movie to watch cause if you look up Piper then you will see she was a real person
This movie makes me cry every time.
Senia Rose me too I'm crying right now
Me too
Never knew this was based on a true story until 3 months ago
+Lexi Pitts it was?? omg ok didn't know that

True... But you didn't have to worry or even know about that stuff when you're a k id. Especially a Disney kid. Disney was like another world to us...
Who else automatically remebered this movie once they started to study South Africa in school?
This movie still impacts me to this day, so powerful and such a positively good movie I still tear up a little.

Wow! Such a heartwarming story!! Loved watching this as a kid. And now more with everything going on in the world. So sad about Mahree though 😓

I love the movie
Someday when me and my boyfriend Chris might as well get married and have a family (6 kids) together we might have a foreign exchange student in our house someday
He said We could get a female one from Japan
I'd love that
I kinda wished her brother Rian showed up alongside Mahree at the end and he asked her: “So what have you learned?”
I love watching this movie all the time. I watched it and I got my kids watching it and now my little ones. 👍👍💞

tripleg719 Yeah. :(
I thought it was just speculation that she was killed, no one really knew for sure.
So enlightening...i dont think mahree( Carrie) is dead due to the fact they changed her name in the movie and left Pipers the same.
Mahree died? How did she die?
yeah they did change her name but who knows where she is now that it is 2022 and it happened in 1977
Hey! It's *Jett Jackson's* Mom
This was a great movie

Does anyone know what happened to the real flora and her last name ?
There should be reparations for that freed bird. It will struggle to take care of itself. 😅
It was the end of the story of the colorful of friendship in the scene
in the top 10 for movies
I know why the caged bird sings.
anyone know the name of the music which starts at 1:26
I would love to know, too.
conformist it's probably just created for the movie and not released
I wish we could find what happened to the 2 girls
Well Piper Dellums is still alive not sure about Mahree bok well real name Carrie they think she has been killed due to actisim which breaks my heart
Piper dellums is still alive but Carrie aka marhee bok was assumed dead
Flora played jetts mother in the show famous jett jackson
What happened to flora does anyone know?
Damn, so apparently Piper’s real name was Carrie & she helped form the first anti-apartheid student underground movement when she returned to South Africa. She was jailed, asked Rep. Dellums for help, then contact with her was cut & they never heard from her again.
iBeFloe Piper was the other girl
No piper is piper marhee bok is Carrie
her name was Carrie not Mahree
There is zero proof that she was jailed or ask Dellums for help. That was made up.
I know Mandela isn't mentioned in this movie, but I blame it for the Mandela effect lol
I purchased the movie on Amazon Prime Video.
I'm from south Africa . I was born in 1989. I was apart new south Africa generation I wish I saw it as a kid. Where can I download it or stream it
Disney+
What happens to

I have it recorded. I can assist you with that? Your welcome to email me or something
Looking at South Africa and the ANC today... I bet that girl regrets sowing that ANC badge on... lol
The girl is dead, just fyi. She was killed by her own race in her own country for speaking out for black south africans.
@@jazzsolocup3291 how do you know?
@jjosephdubya where?
@@jaclynschilt4699 there was an article about it they lost touch she was jailed for her activism they think she was killed because of it
I don't support the ANC but it was a different time back then. It was a nice gesture and would have meant a lot as most Afrikaners were pro-apartheid.
That was a good ending sad but good and why did she let the bird go she could have kept it with her
If she could see South Africa today, she would snap that bird's neck
Cope

Oh shut up. Your opinion isn't that important, if you want to opine about "politics"
Do you really want a movie against segregation to be "two-sided"?
