@@HadrianGuardiola so true, my wife works hard, I work hard we both have different tasks but I don’t see her tasks any less then my own. We are a team. I feel sad for people that never saw the hard work their parents put in. I could speculate that they expect it or look down on certain work needing to be done and this is a projection. Finding an equal partner is necessary.
I think it was deliberate. In the olden days people were more collectivistic in their thinking, so they thought more about how they would sound to others.
They were trained that way. Believe me, no mother ever had that calm voice with all the baby boomer kids from the 40’s and on. And any parent on your block could yell at you too. Most of us learned about pads and tampons at summer camp lol.
But if the depression, anxiety, and horrible feelings continue, please look up what PMDD is and talk to a doctor or gynecologist about treatment if you think you have it. This is a vital piece of information that unfortunately was unavailable in 1946, but realizing I had PMDD (pre-mentrual dysphoric disorder) has greatly decreased the amount of emotional agony you are in. It is one thing to struggle with mood swings and live with it, but a whole other thing to live with chronic depression and/or anxiety every time you're about to get your period. If something causes you too much pain, seeing a good doctor who listens and helps is worth it.
I remember seeing this in school as a young girl and afterward, each girl (we were separated from the boys to view the movie) was given a little "personal Product kit" that looked like a little gift that included this pamphlet and an assortment of napkins (pads) and tampons. Little did we know once that little "gift" from Mother Nature arrived it was a life of Hell for 30 years! Great memory now all that hell is over. Where is the Disney film for Menopause?
"... life of Hell for 30 years......" 30 years? more like 40, and perhaps more. Better nutrition and greater body weight for women means longer time until menopause.

Right? It's insane. I was diagnosed 10 YEARS after I first got my period. 10 years with overwhelming pain, and a period that lasted 15 days. Being forced to do PE, when I had cramps that felt like birth. Oh boy does it suck!
How is a disney film from more than half a century ago more informative and helpful about periods, than the ones we have now in modern times? Straight and to the point! Why can't they show more things like these in school?
Because the blue hair harpies, men who think they’re women and women of think they’re men would cry and whine about it being exclusive. How dare we believe in a binary and biology 😩

How in the hell are videos from 1949 more educational than the crap we learned at school in 2000? Damn, like this is LITERALLY the BEST video I have ever seen about menstruation!
Bc we aren't allowed to talk about it in school, bc anything to do with sex is now labeled pornographic instead of natural, bc students don't have the maturity to handle this info bc it's been made taboo and we have been told it's disgusting, inappropriate and told to keep it hush hush. In other words...we have devolved when it comes to education.
Something is seriously wrong with educational systems of today. They're more interesting in money than child development That's why we have so many young adults who can't even multiply without thinking of using a calculator, despite having graduated Thanks for nothing school! Luckily, I took the initiative to learn all the basics I missed out on during my school days and I get it now
The 1980s and the "Moral Majority" conservative backlash happened. It's amazing to read books from the 1960s and '70s and realize how far backwards we've gone. Judy Blume's "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" is a lot more controversial now than when it was published in 1970.
I used this video to help my special needs daughter understand what was happening. When she responded with a 'you gotta be freakin kiddin me' I knew she got it. 😂

It would be completely unfair to let that out on my coworkers, or even my husband or even my children. They are not responsible for the cramps.
Manuela Glavas I feel like that almost every day, and sometimes it is the fault of the people around me, but that doesn't entitle me, either. Yeah, I can see why. This has great information in it, but also as severely outdated information too. Don't want to be spreading misinformation even if there is some good here.
I think they should show this film to boys too. It's so straightforward and matter-of-fact, and it removes the haze of mystery without being titillating.
I agree. I am 66 and l remember in elementary school they had all the girls leave class and go to the auditorium for some mysterious reason. I asked a friend what it was all about and she said it was a talk about menstruation. Until seeing this video l wasn't aware of exactly how it all worked.
I am a 36 year old male and and I agree too! Such a beautiful film about an otherwise touchy but important subject that the precious, sensitive, important, beloved, beautiful female body goes through. ❤
This is literally the nicest way I've ever seen the menstruation cycle depicted. It's so beautiful and actually makes me feel good about being a woman!
This I believe was banned for a long time or at least that's what I heard. Which is ridiculous because it's handled very well and is very informative. Sure it's a tad dated with the subtle tones that suggest every girl is going to become a mother but it's overall still very progressive and promotes healthy self-esteem.
WHAT?! This did no such thing. It made you target of abuse and to make you feel like a stereotype. You are strong and able to gain aid without falling for this shit. Ugh! Seen this and was grossed. This was designed to make you look gross to men instead of cared for.
FENRIR-ART I’m actually it was a better way to explain it. These itching disgusting about this and if you think about it if your mother didn’t have a period you want to been born
This honestly aged well. This film explained things thoroughly and more concisely than my health classes in public school. I like how it also dispelled common myths surrounding menstruation.
Why is everyone saying this was an informative video? It doesn’t even mention what might be the single most important thing to prepare them for - the fact that they will bleed. If I saw this before I got my first period without other information, I’d be terrified when I started seeing blood. Pads, tampons or any other sanitary product aren’t brought up at all (though tampons were pretty controversial in the 1940s, so that’s not surprising). Sure, this has scientific information, but that’s not what kids need to know before they’ve had a period - they need to know how to deal with it, and they need to know they aren’t about to die. I’m not saying it’s completely useless, but it definitely doesn’t do nearly a good enough job at explaining menstruation, so I don’t know why people are acting like it is. It’s dated at best.

Nothing makes radical ideologues more angry than than reason, logic and common sense.
As humorous as it might be to watch this now in 2018, it's important to remember that it was absolutely groundbreaking in 1946. There was still a lot of negative stigma and misinformation about periods that at the time (and previous decades) were very mainstream and common. Women's health wasn't talked about and a lot of this information was kept quiet until the "day of" which wouldn't help anybody. My grandmother told me about how all of this information was considered taboo, gross, or inherently inappropriate when she was growing up. Hell, even TODAY there's still people who think that way. Still though, historically speaking, this is a great piece of history regarding health education! You've got to appreciate it for that at least!

Nothing in this movie is 'dated.' All of it is still great advice. Nothing has been proven wrong, since 1946, by 'modern science.' Amazing. Even the part about not feeling sorry for oneself, and still taking care of one's appearance, which "gives one new poise and lifts morale"-great advice in general for anyone! An excellent film, made during the days when Disney was a good and trusted company. 🥰
yeah, Disney was good on driver's ed too. Absolutely saved lives. As to this one, it did handwave over how the fallopians catch the eggs (that's a fascinating topic in of itself) but overall I came here to smile at 1940s irony but stayed for the honesty. 9/10 would recommend for niece (or daughter if that happens).
There is one thing that has changed: This video says it's normal for periods to be irregular for just the first year. However, now they say that they are often irregular for the first several years. My periods were irregular for the first 10 years (until my early 20s), but none of my doctors were concerned about it; they said it was normal for young women.
@@halleyorion There is tons of research on this topic. It seems your Dr used the word “normal” interchangeably for not a medical problem. It’s not common to be irregular for 10 years without a hormone, weight change , or long term illness to be at the root. I am sure they do not want girls to assume and go 10 years without checking with a Dr. I am sure it is possible to be irregular without health issues however 2 to 3 years is the average time before it regulates.
@@stacase , I'm glad this helped you understand. Most males of your generation thru the 1970's were done a grave diservice by not being allowed to learn this. Then checked as they got older to make sure they still understood.
My friend's daughter got her first period, and her Mom showed her where the feminine products were. The girl said "how nice of you to be prepared for this day". The Mom said, oh these are mine. The girl looked confused and said "from when you were 12?" The Mom said, no it's what I use each month. The girl started sobbing, she thought it was a one time thing! I watched one in 6th grade that kept focusing on not being able to dance. It was really bizarre. Thank goodness I also took sex ed before that in a different school district.
Oh my goodness!!! As the mom of a 9 year old daughter who will be turning 10 soon, I can not tell you how incredibly grateful I am for this video!!!! I'm not sure when the right time is to show it to her (I most likely will some time this school year or next), but this will for sure be how she learns. I absolutely love how it is explained as being completely normal and natural in such an even tone.
Way back in the 50s and 60s, we were not allowed to wash our hair during periods. I notice that in the video, she is wearing a bathing cap when showering.
For those saying that animation studios would never put something like this out today: you're right. The backlash they'd get would be atrocious. The recent movie 'Turning Red' was ripped to shreds for briefly mentioning pads and showing a hormonal teenager having an embarrassing crush. They were accused of grooming and sexualising kids. Absolutely ridiculous
Because animation back then and the target audience both had class. Nowadays its internet zoomers and tiktok braindead parents and hoes. And Disney of today is full of pedos.
The movie was pretty creepy man. It wasn't what they did, it was how they did it. Really kids aroun 13 to 15 shouldn't be shown in media being sexual even if it happens in real life.
This film, which was shown in 6th grade in our school district, was the extent of our sex ed in 1961. At 3:55 the narrator states "If the egg is impregnated, which happens when a woman is going to have a child..." We were never told how the egg got impregnated, so several of us thought we might be pregnant if our period was late, even though we had never so much as kissed a boy. What needless anxiety we suffered.

Straight-forward common sense, with no unnecessary drama. This encourages women to see their bodies in a normal and positive light, while acknowledging that some cases may need extra care.
I'm 64 and I remember our grade school showing all of the females this same type of movie to explain our body changes and menstruation. They brought us all together in the cafeteria and let us sit at the tables and for at least 30 to 45 minutes we watched and listened. By the time it was over, we all discussed how we couldn't wait to become a full fledged woman! The guys got their own personal male version too. When the first girl in our grade started her period at school, we all(boys and girls) all took a vote for the teacher to let her go home for the rest of the day. We were all so proud of her! She became a full fledged woman that day. Too bad they didn't include a birth control prevention post....cause 5 yrs later, she became the first in our class to get pregnant too. Such is life. She loved babies!
really? i was devastated! made worse by when all the boys made fun of us after they had health class. they would squirt ketchup on our pants and point red lasers at us and yell YOU GOT YOUR PERIOD! i wanted to die, i really did. i thought my life was over.
Back then honey, everyone was more mature than they are now. I heard my niece getting bullied because she started her period. She's 11 by the way. Sad how both females and males make fun of periods, but back then we were so happy we were finally becoming true women 🥺. I miss those days 😭
I saw this when I was in 6th grade (1972). The boys were in a different classroom watching a film geared toward male development. I think it has stood the test of time, it should be shown today.
I quite agree! I don't remember which film we 6th-grade girls were shown in 1983, but this one does stand the test of time. It's all just good, sensible, and reassuring advice narrated by a soothing and wise-sounding lady. I suppose it ought to be shown a year or two sooner now, since the average age of first menstruation is now around eleven.
Yeah live with people. 🙄 I was 11 when my so called gift arrived. She should've tried living with 5 brothers, 1 sister and my parents in a 4 bedroom house. And my father was an abusive alcoholic. 😥
As a man I applaud such honest, straightforward and no-frills educational content. Back when my grandmother was alive (born 1928), she used to tell me during her time NO ONE talked about sex or periods. She was absolutely clueless as to how girls got pregnant, which led to her getting pregnant with her first boyfriend at the age of 18. She had no idea what was going on and was shocked to find herself pregnant a few weeks later. That event literally ruined her life and preventer from getting an education, good jobs, etc., since no one would hire a single woman at that time. While all her girlfriends were going to vocational schools, getting good jobs, getting married, traveling the world, etc., she was ostracized by society and ended up babysitting all her friends' kids while they would go on vacation to Europe, etc. According to her, even though she loves her children, getting pregnant at an early age out of wedlock in the 1940's completely ruined her life, and all because she was completely ignorant about sex. So kudos to the makers of this film, however hokey it might look to us today.
Sex education didn't make women get pregant from ruleless sex less, if anything it seems to have done no good. I highly douht your grandmother didn't know what sex was at least a little, I think she's a liar.

As someone who suffers from endometriosis, I'm surprised that a film as old as this made a point to tell their viewers to go to the doctor if they suffer from severe discomfort or migraines. I was never told about those kinds of conditions and had to suffer for 10+ years before I even found out that I was genetically prone to endometriosis and that the amount that I bleed and how badly I hurt and how wildly my emotions swing every which way every month wasn't normal. Good job Disney!
@@Seashellsbytheseashore21 I was always told that it's normal for women to feel pain during their period and that some women just have heavier periods than others and that its completely normal for things to suck for that week of the month, so I would just suffer in silence because I was told that its what everyone feels and figured I should just put up with it. I wasn't told that there's a limit to how painful/heavy things should be until I was in my early 20s when I was crying to my mum about how the painkillers don't work and she told me how I'm genetically prone to uterine problems from at least 3 different lineages from my immediate family, which lead me to getting an appointment with a great doctor who actually listened to what I had to say and got me on hormone pills and an examination at the hospital. Idk if its because talking about periods and women's health is still a little bit taboo socially speaking or something, but a lot of girls don't get warned about these things in their regular sex ed classes and don't find out until later in life that there's a limit to how much pain/bleeding you should be dealing with.
@@Seashellsbytheseashore21 The repression has softened to some degree now, but you have to understand that until recently, menstruation was so taboo that mothers barely talked about it to their daughters, let alone physicians openly giving guidance to the community. Therefore, many girls had no idea what degree of pain during a period is "normal" (the actual answer is "virtually none"), so they silently endured levels of pain that should have merited a gynecological appointment or a hospital stay. (Endometriosis is a common culprit in period pain.)
@@dsch0 "virtually none" makes me so sad. I got up the courage to talk but all they can do is recommend yoga, acupuncture, "have you tried herbs?" shes_sarah_shaped: Better diet today than when this was made? I am doubtful of that. There are tons of additives to our food. Plastic also mimics estrogen I think. We are more obese, and fat affects our hormone levels.
This is actually really impressive for 1946 wtf? The visuals look like something you might see in the 80s or 90s (specifically when it's going over the science of periods, not the animation or whatever). I'm sure it was colorized and it's graphics were cleared up though.
True, this was very ahead of its time. Just so you know though, colour in motion pictures happened for animation far, far earlier than it did for live action, so this would already have been in colour. This was because cameras could not yet capture colour, but animation didn't use that process.
Not only that but people in my country are so behind. I didn't know people teached about periods in the 40s . While nobody told my mother about periods until she got them. Same with my grandma

I used to get vomiting, diarrhoea, and terrible crippling pain that made me want to die to escape it, on first day of probably most of my periods during my 20s. Actually I just thought that was normal! Maybe it was? Anyway then I got an Implanon contraceptive implant (for its intended purpose to stop pregnancy) and about the same time all those symptoms settled down (coincidence?). I've had an Implanon ever since (replaced at intervals) for about 15 years. Wonder whether it was something abnormal, and whether it would come back without an Implanon? Hmm, this is probably why we need better health education for girls and boys.
This is not a documentary , documentary doesn't mean informative, its literally just a style of film, documentaries can be fictional, its like any other genre, and this certainly doesn't fall into it.
The cartoonography is beautiful and the explanation is sorely needed. I can remember that the boys would be asked to leave the room when stories like this were shown in health class. Menstruation should be taught to both genders. This film was made in 1946 and my mother gave me this same information in 1966. In high school in the 1970s my cramps were disabling. It hurt so much the first two days my thighs ached. I spent my days on the couch with a heating pad. My mother would put a blanket over me if I felt so poorly I didn't want to move. Fortunately in adulthood I hardly had a cramp.
I knew what was happening, but I don't think Dr's really had a good understanding in the 70s why cramps happened. I had a Dr tell me I was lying! But my mom, who never ever had a cramp, was kind & understanding. Thank God for Ibuprofen (which is an anti-prostaglandin (sp) that blocks most period cramp pain
I was the same with the cramps! Couldn't function. Early 1970s docs weren't too bothered and my mum didn't believe in painkillers. At school spent a lot of time in the medical room, was given, I think, paracetamol which I managed to grab handfuls in order to get through my A Level papers. Remember sitting exams as high as a kite on them, my head spinning. Somehow passed 😂😂😂 Nowadays it's known as endometriosis.
The way they explained things like comparing the size of an ovary to an almond and depicted the uterine lining shedding were really great ways to put it into perspective. I think if this is what was played in my elementary health class it would have clicked for sure

This is WAY more straightforward then the one I watched when I was a kid but I think it’s better because it really touched base on most thing you need to know

Yeah it's a great video, taught me quite a bit about how women are built. The presentation is informative and enjoyable to watch!
In the school I went to the kids made unpleasant jokes about periods and I was devastated when my first one arrived. I was bullied because of it.

I remember when we all came out after the presentation, boys couldn't look at us and we couldn't look at the boys. Our lives were forever changed in that moment.
When did this happen?
What's a menstrual belt?!
@tiph3802 It was a garter type of belt used to keep your Menstrual Pads in place. They quickly went out of style when the Glue backed Pads were invented.

Ain't nothing she said here that's old it's still relevant. I love the narrator's voice it's so soothing and very down to earth.
Why didn’t you mention it to your doctor during a yearly physical?
I got up the courage to talk but all they can do is recommend yoga, acupuncture, "have you tried herbs?"

True, this was very ahead of its time. Just so you know though, colour in motion pictures happened for animation far, far earlier than it did for live action, so this would already have been in colour. This was because cameras could not yet capture colour, but animation didn't use that process.

Both do not need to know all these details. They can learn about it later down the road after girls become comfortable in their bodies.
@@zerotodona1495 Maybe boys don't need to learn it as early, but they should learn it before adulthood.
I knew what was happening, but I don't think Dr's really had a good understanding in the 70s why cramps happened. I had a Dr tell me I was lying! I was the same with the cramps! Couldn't function. Early 1970s docs weren't too bothered and my mum didn't believe in painkillers. At school spent a lot of time in the medical room, was given, I think, paracetamol which I managed to grab handfuls in order to get through my A Level papers.
