I'm a 59 year old former soldier, volunteer firefighter, and carpenter. I have tears streaming down my face. This is the song I sang to my wife (in her ear) at our wedding in '95. She said that was the first time she'd heard it and it was her new favorite song, in spite of me. She was the light of my life and the best friend I've ever had. She died in my arms 13 years ago, and I really want to be with her, my sweet Lord.
Just to give you a bit of background on the video, in 2016 George Harrison's widow and son held a worldwide contest for a video to accompany this 1971 song from George. This winning video features Emma Rubinowitz and Esteban Hernandez, both of the San Francisco Ballet. The reason it was selected is because it conveyed the joy of the song in the form of dance.
Its a nice video to be sure, but I do agree it can be distracting from totally just listening to the music. Same for a lot, (but not all), of older songs put to modern videos
I have loved this video since it came out. Have loved the song for 50 years. I think the video is VERY complimentary to the song and interpretive of it, also...It is just a joyful, beautiful song, and I'm certain that George would have approved...
This is not your usual love song of a man proclaiming his love to his woman. He is singing his love to his God and is grateful for His undying love. It is a hymn. Set aside a few hours and listen to the album from which this song comes, entitled: All Things Must Pass. It is a triple record set. His debut solo album in America. It's monumental !
..."Class of 76"...This song was most likely playing on the radio when the yellow ball smiley face with the quote "Have a Nice Day" was created and started showing up EVERYWHERE!
My closest friend whom I have been friends with for 57 years is a major Beatles-phile were talking about which of the Beatles single career we thought was best. He chose Paul and I chose George. He was surprised but he agreed with my reasoning. I said Paul is far and away the most commercial of the four. John is the most unique. RIngo played songs that fit his limited vocals but George was the poet and philosopher. So as I like songs with more depth George is my favorite.
Hi from the Uk. I was 14yrs old when the Beatles hit the charts with ‘Love Me Do’ so grew up with their music. Was lucky enough to meet all four whilst attending the premiere of “ Yellow Submarine “. We were besieged along other celebrities in the cinema foyer by hundreds of fans when police lost control. After swapping brief pleasantries, enjoyed the movie etc, they moved off. I was going to ask them to sign the programme but as they were in conversation with Peter Sellers I lost my nerve. At 74 I still remember what a magical night it was.
I was checking to see who added this. This is one of my all time fav songs, and I do love this video, but the song needs to be listened to first, before seeing the video. It’s a lot to take in all at once.
I should have added that if the video had been the main subject with the music as a background only then it would have been decent, but since the music was the main subject, the video was too distracting. Does that make sense? 🙂
George's best song! Not crazy about the video myself, but the song is excellent! Blow Away by George Harrison, that's the one you need to react to next!
Written much between the end of those sessions and the beginning of the Abbey Road sessions with Billy Preston in mind. He changed his mind and kept it up his sleeve rather than attempt a version with the Beatles.
Like I said before: EVERYONE needs a little George Harrison in their life!!!! This song in particular makes your day exponentially better!!!!!🤞❤ Check out how the video to this song came to be, it just may change your mind.
Paul McCartney & Wings - Uncle Albert - Band on the Run - Listen to what the Man says - With a Little Luck - Jet - Live and Let Die - Coming Up - Let em In - When the Night - My Love
in the USA the B Side of My Sweet Lord was Isn't It a Pity. What is Life was the net single released here with the B side being Apple Scruffs. So when I saw your comment I was confused lol.
All Things Must Pass is George’s masterpiece. An album where he was finally able to have more than one or two songs. Please keep mining this great album for more tracks, especially Wah-Wah; If Not for You; Behind That Locked Door; Beware of Darkness; Awaiting on You All; and the title track, All Things Must Pass.
I love this song because you can really hear the JOY in Harrison. It's like he was just letting loose and singing from his heart, and we were all happy to go along with him for the ride! This song lifts my spirits every time I hear it. 💞
I've always seen this song as an example of George's penchant for slipping a spiritual message in a love song. I think the "You" who's love he can't do without is God. Amazing tune that I have loved since childhood. Beatles freak from the crib on up, yo!!!
This is what this song sounded like on the radio back in the day when it was played more frequently than it is today. It's an amazing song, my favorite by George Harrison!
George was always my favorite,I am 70 years old this is now my favorite video this young lady makes me remember the exuberance of youth, something I seemed to have forgot.
You need to listen to George's sense of humor, try Crackerbox Palace or/and This Song. On this song George's "husband in law" Eric Clapton is playing rhythm guitar
His album, "All Things Must Pass" was amazing....and the first solo effort after the Beatles broke up. I wore this album out playing it over and over. When the Beatles hit in 1964, it was George Harrison that I had the mad crush on. Loved, loved this album. "Run of the Mill", or "Beware of Darkness", are also from this album are great. More please...
The vocals lost in the back is due to the famous producer Phil Spector and his well known "Wall of Sound" style. The whole All Things Must Pass album that this song is from is pretty much like that.
Yes, I'm dancing right now! Thats me dancing in the store, too, Amber! People stare and I stare back...smile and wave then dance on my merry way! lol Thank you!
I had forgotten this song. George had a certain sound he gravitated to. He used a lot of unusual chord progressions. And his vocal stylings were very unusual and unique to only him.
My daughter is a professional dancer and this is my all time favorite song/video by George Harrison. The dancing, the color yellow, his voice, the music, the words to the song. It speaks to me
George was my favorite as a kid back in the 60’s. When they broke up, Paul McCartney and Wings was one of my favorite bands. “Let Me Roll It” would be a great one to do by Paul and Wings!! 😊
I was a kid in the 70s..I became a wings fan , and then I learned about the bealtes who became my favorite band...wings was a great band...Paul had some solo career
The main guitar riff in “Let Me Roll It” is the same riff John plays on “Beef Jerky” during the instrumental break. Many think this was a tribute to John by Paul.
Now you need to see "Concert for George," which is the concert recorded on the first anniversary of his death. The concert is filled with all of George's friends, including Paul and Ringo, as well as Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne from ELO, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and many, many more. It's a must-see performance, and features some of George's best songs, sung by those who love him. Love the reaction! Peace!
You missed the best part, when Prince goes off, on the song, “My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Simply incredibly. J and Amber, if you haven’t already watched it, it is a must.
Jay, I agree with you about how the video takes away from the song. I absolutely love this video but I am old enough to remember when this song came out. So I just closed my eyes to revel in its greatness on its own. And by doing that, the song sounds so much richer. imagine hearing this come on the radio. So I’ve had decades to enjoy it standing alone without any video. Glad you got into the song itself. It’s one of my most favorite George Harrison songs. And yes, I’m one of those that consider George to be the best Beatle. I’ve had decades to come to that conclusion. And it wasn’t easy.
Listen to “It Don’t Come Easy” by Ringo, written by George. George gave Ringo the song because he felt it was better suited to Ringo’s voice. He actually GAVE him the song, didn’t ask for royalties or anything.
loved this video since it first came out, What is life? but 2 young people enjoying life, dancing on tables, through a cemetery and the woods, it conveys the message of the song perfectly
I would LOVE for you to react to the two "new" Beatles songs, "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love". They were done for the Anthology series. Paul and Yoko went thru a ton of John's demo tapes, etc. and they chose these two songs. The three surviving (at that time) Beatles then went into the studio and with the help of Jeff Lynne, finished these songs. Paul said they treated it as if "John was just away on holiday". Peace and Love RSR and family!
You have reacted to several of their songs, but you have barely scratched the surface. It will only get better. I envy your ability to hear them for the first time.
Incredibly as it seems, i never knew this George Harrison song before until i heard a live cover by Built to Spill and since then i love both versions.
The song is from 1970's All Things Must Pass. The video is a more recent (2016 I believe) creation selected from a competition by Olivia & Dhani Harrison.. I enjoy it, but I can also understand how it could distract from a first listen of the song.
When "deep" is also joyful, uplifting and edifying. Actually a win that The Beatles rejected so many of George's songs so that they could fill his solo catalog.
I have heard this song many times before finding this video. I think the dancing was a pleasant surprise when I discovered it. Now I watch the video as much for the dancing as for the song.
This is my favorite solo Harrison song, and early hit from his post Beatles day, made even better by Eric Clapton on guitar! Harrison was a very spiritual guy, and that thread flows through a lot of his music.
This song touched my heart beyond My Sweet Lord when this album came out. I love the way Amber dances to this song. She is always so beautiful. I love her💖. I agree with Jay that his voice sounded behind the instruments. Whoever has done recording sound control? With said, I love George Harrison. I love The Beatles. I love Jay and Amber😘. My recommended music by George is "Don't Let Me Wait Too Long."👍
Phil Spector co-produced the All Things Must Pass album set (3 records) so his style pushed tons of overdubbed instruments over the voice, causing the songs (great songs btw) to sound a bit mushy. The remastered CD helped some but that was just the gothic character of the album.
@@jefflarkin9619 Thank you for your info. All those years since I bought Gerorges' first album, I always wondered why the guitar sound and his voice were unbalanced and unclear. But I still love this song😘.
"Isn't it a Pity?" is probably my favorite George song....Tedeschi Trucks do a great version of it, and on the Concert for George w/Clapton & Billy Preston live is AMAZING....
The video looks more like it belongs in a 1950s musical. The movie 'Carousel' comes to mind. Ironically, the 21st-century video producer was likely marketing teens. The video was actually done after George had passed about 40 years after the song was originally released in 1970.
This is from George's 1970 album, " All Things Must Pass". This was written by George for Billy Preston but decided to keep it as a faster rocking song suited to George. Phil Spector produced this album. A wonderful upbeat tune that asks that question, What is Life? His backup vocals were Eric Clapton and the entire Bonnie and Delaney and Friends Band. Multiple acoustic quitars were played by Badfinger.super tune. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
This one of my favorite songs to come on the radio in the early 70's, turned it up every time. When I first saw this video a couple years ago, I didn't like it at the first time, but watched again and now I think it's genius! The girl is going through the phases of life. Young , clumsy, playful, (the playground) - Getting older, learning about mortality(graveyard) - Puberty and her blossoming sensuality,(the leaves) - Out on her own, (the forest) - And finally, meeting her mate. They even seem to have a fight but get back together during the dance. The only touch I wished they added was just as the song is closing out, they're followed by a little one, dancing along behind them. Members of the San Francisco Ballet submitted this in a contest to be the official video of the song.
Interesting fact. You just reacted to Eric Clapton who was infatuated with George Harrison's first wife, Patti Boyd. He was so infatuated that he ended up marrying Boyd after she and Harrison divorced. As far as this song is concerned, it's a beautiful sentiment and typical of Harrison's solo work, always wondering about life and the spiritual world. He was a genius musician and sadly underused when he was part of the G.O.A.T while they allowed him one sometimes two and rarely three of his own compositions per album. When he was a part of The Beatles, his first No. 1 didn't come until 1969, the gorgeously written and composed "Something."
This song ( and the entire album) were the beginnings of Derek and The Domino's, George had borrowed them from Delaney and Bonnie and the magic was born
This video is perfect in its imperfection. What is Life? Perfectly imperfect. The video was selected by George's wife and son as part of a contest for what the official video for this song should be. I love that they picked this one. p.s. Thank you for what you do!
So glad you did this! It’s one of my favs from his debut. You guys need to check out George’s tribute to John, “All Those Years Ago.” It’s truly an amazing song and it’s so incredibly profound and touching. I know you’ll absolutely love it. ❤️
And the other Beatles routinely played on each other’s records, but they all played together on “All those Years ago” along with George Martin (their old producer).

"That is Amber" is a wonderful compliment. She is Emma Rubinowitz a famous American Ballet Dancer.

One of my favs by George, this cut and "Give Me Love"

So many George songs that I would want on my funeral wake sound track. George had a lot of heart.
This song makes me want to cry with happiness. It just does.
George's That's What It Takes might be an underrated gem.

@@tvgator1 "Don't Let Me Wait Too Long" is his undoubtedly style. I would love to hear this song by The Beatles.🎼
Just a simple thank you for playing this one.
"Isn't it a Pity?" is probably my favorite George song....Tedeschi Trucks do a great version of it, and on the Concert for George w/Clapton & Billy Preston live is AMAZING....
I agree but I can listen to If I needed Someone anytime.
YES YES
The video looks more like it belongs in a 1950s musical. The movie 'Carousel' comes to mind. Ironically, the 21st-century video producer was likely marketing teens. The video was actually done after George had passed about 40 years after the song was originally released in 1970.
Freaking love this George Harrison song my favorite Beatle.
And George saw vocals as simply another instrument. He never tried to overtake the other players with vocals in his music
How crazy to be a member of the Beatles and be underrated.
Such a fun, uplifting song. Impossible to be sad while watching this video.
Members of the San Francisco Ballet submitted this in a contest to be the official video of the song.
i love this video to this song.. its that joyful happiness you have when you are young. it reminds us you can find happiness at any age.
Clapton is actually playing on this song
Lots of songs written about/for Patti Boyd. This is a great song, but it isn’t one of them.
This song ( and the entire album) were the beginnings of Derek and The Domino's, George had borrowed them from Delaney and Bonnie and the magic was born
Clapton was best man at George and Patti’s wedding. And Harrison was best man and Eric and Patti’s wedding.
@@bryansmith9431 George was talking about God in this song.
Absolutely one of his best-❤
This video is perfect in its imperfection. What is Life? Perfectly imperfect. The video was selected by George's wife and son as part of a contest for what the official video for this song should be. I love that they picked this one. p.s. Thank you for what you do!
Such an awesome, classy song !
I've loved it for close to 55 years !
Love that song and video. Paul’s “Here Today” is also a beautiful tribute to John.
I was thinking of that one and "When we was Fab"
@@tracycole3941 Oh yes! “When We Was Fab” is phenomenal. And, it has Jeff Lynne, Elton John, and Ringo.
very very true
