I love Svetlana and I have great respect for her. I understand your comments her vault is sloppy, but I love her bars and what made Svetlana revered was that she defied the odds of her sport. Gymnast are small, under 5 ft like Keri Strug and Kim Zmeskal were 4'7 that body type was liked cause it would allow them to do the hardest stuff and fly on tumbling in floor exercise. Svetlana was 5'4 or 5'5 which is tall for a gymnast; coaches and gyms turned her away saying she was too tall and couldn't be a gymnast until one coach told her Svetlana you can be special. The USSR was a gymnastics factory always creating. She created moves to accomidate her height and has the most moves named after her in the code of points. That's why she is so revered. She did 3 Olympics which not many gymnast do.
I just think Khorkina was lucky she was a gymnast during that time cause I don't know how her current routines would be scored under the 2017-2020 code of points
You have to put it in context. Yes her gymnastics did look rather unorthodox (even sloppy) particularly on the vaulting and floor tumbling events. But her style actually worked very well on the bars and beam. It was also very unusual back then to have a gymnast be so tall, so she had to basically create a new style that worked for her. That's why she has so many moves named after her (she couldn't do some of the moves the smaller gymnasts could do). The real reason she is so revered is because her resume. Like her or not, she is a 3-time world all-around champion (the only person who's won more is Simone Biles), and a 3-time Olympian as well. On paper, she is one of the all time greats, regardless of how anyone subjectively viewed her as a gymnast.
There was also a lot of "hype" around her. Queen of this ... she and the media played flirtation over and over again . It was good for her and them. It leaked into her scores. You know "they" always gotta pump something or someone up to be the soul Source. Lol . She had great drama and mystic. A great expression and dance. Tumbling. . Eeeeehhhh. She worked with what she had .... and well . So that is great gymnastics from that pov
But was she wrong? I mean the girl she was talking about literally messed up her entire routine and destroyed Russia's chances for a medal on just one event.

Chell yeah! I'm 39 and made some goals on paper, thanks to Chellsie. Semi-accomplished one of them already (180° pirouette on one arm on FX [from back extension roll for now]) ... but yes, huge inspiration for so many adult/recreational gymnasts.
They were kids for one thing, and were simply excited about the opportunity to be world champions for the first time. What’s comical is where Romania is now- NOWHERE.
That Tim Daggett is so full of bs. He talks like he's best friends with everyone and knows them perfectly. He never shuts up and is frankly the most annoying commentator ever.
Considering she was the Olympic all around CHAMPION a year later, I’d say you’re just displaying your own sense of inadequacy. Nice try, epic fail at bringing your small little self up.
I was on a gymnastics-themed message board a long time ago and I will never forget the thread where people were asking if Terin Humphry is black LOLOLOLOL so funny.
Is just me or the Romanians were terribly underscored on beam ? Oana Ban for example, after that wonderful exercise only got 9.537 ?? what the hell 1:02:10
Watching this for the 37th time and just realizing and admiring the perfection ifFan’s pak into the stalder. The entire furst half was amazing. The pirouetting into jaeger into that gorgeous pak:stalder combo was like looking at a piece of art. Lame they wait ro 🇺🇦 until they have a fall. And to make matters worse, they inly televised the fall. Ugh.
Elfi making a comment like that was super unprofessional, no matter how terrible the gymnast did. Neither she nor Tim Daggett ever competed in an Olympics, and Elfi only competed in one Worlds, winning a bronze in vault (and probably then only because the Worlds were in Canada that year and they threw her a bone). Don't get me started on Al. None of them had experience in the level of gymnastic moves they were commenting on as this competition was 10 years after either of them were even halfway relevant in the sport. NBC's decision to replace Elfi with Nastia Liukin was a well called move.
lol fair call-I think I meant the Al dude but I did say Tim. But the comment about Elfi and the fact that the gymnastics they did back in the early 80’s were less complicated than what these athletes were doing in 2003 still stands. I will say that I’ve watched a lot of these and Tim tends to be a little more gracious in his opinions. But Elfi is hateful just about every time. She disparaged the Romanians and Russians every chance she got but when the Americans screwed up she would talk about how awesome they usually are. I think that’s what rubbed me the wrong way. Anyway, thanks for the correction!
Umm Elfi never ever won a worlds medal. Lol She won a bronze at a World Cup event, not a World Championships. Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs was the first female Canadian gymnast to win a medal at a worlds (balance beam 2006).
But she was right by Russian standards, should have said it nicer than she did but this girl was nowhere near the Russian standard. Her split jumps where subpar, her tumbling could have broken her neck or broken her ankle. Obviously Elfie had seen her perform before to make that comment, she could have worded it nicer. But she is on a team with Khorkina, who would have murdered this girl with just a stare.
running_girl I believe that gymnast is now famous for Parkour and competes for Russia. I saw her on a gymnastics show and she talked about how devastating the comments that people made were-she knew she’d screwed up royally and was likely off the team but when she heard the things people said she was damn near broken. That’s why I prefer the BBC or FIG broadcasts-they may make comments but they’ve never been cruel.
depends on the judge and the severity of the swing. if the judge doesn't feel like the gymnast is in control of the landing, they can take a deduction.
What's Tim talking about with the whole "Romania didn't have one athlete score into the 9's at the last world championships" at 20:55? There wasn't a team comp in 2002, and in 2001 Romania clearly dominated and won gold. Someone help me out here?
Would have loved to see everybody healthy and everyone on the America team hit in Athens. Salivating over a Patterson, Kupets, Memmel, McCool, Humphrey, Bhardwaj Team in this quad.
Is it just me or does it look like Terin Humphrey has been punched in the face in the video before she starts floor, just on one side? I initially though it was bad blush application, but now I'm wondering if she was covering up a beating! :(
I sure hope not! On the other hand it's a quite dangerous sport and she may have "eaten the bar" (or the beam) as they say. During training. When you train gymnastics 6-8 hours a day, accidents come with the territory.
She has a birthmark on one side of her face. I am not sure if it is showing through her makeup or if her makeup is just more heavily applied on that side.
Nunovurbznzsodontask eh... I think it would have been better if Elfie ended with “no talent at this level of competition” because it sounded like she meant she had flat out no talent for gymnastics, which I think is easily seen to be untrue.
Terin’s bars were actually not as good as Hollie in 2003. She improved massively in 2004- which ultimately won her silver. Sadly, Hollie’s back injury ended her Olympic chances.
Carly Patterson telling Terin Humphrey that taking out her double Arabian dismount made her routine only out of a 9.6 to justify her 9.312 lol. SV was 9.8
bbhouk1 prior to the 2009-2012 quad, you could compete in the worlds the year before the olympics if you were going to be turning 16 in the olympic year. ie., shawn johnson turned 16 in 2008 so she was eligible for the 2007 world championships.
Yeah..Romania may have won the '79 world team with out the AA services of Comaneci....however had Comaneci not performed on beam ..Romania would have counted eberle....8.95 beam and Russia would have won...selective memory Marta!
Who was the announcer that said she cant believe that the Russian team put someone on the team with so little talent. How rude! She should not be an announcer.
But she was right with Russian standards, that girl messed up and could have caused a serious injury. Russians typically have a strong team and talented girls, this girls was subpar by far.
For Elfie to say " an athlete with so little talent " is so gormless. I like to see her flip and tumble like so on a championship arena in 2003..sorry Elfie, you brainfarted on this one!!
Personally this is my least favorite era of gymnastics. It doesn’t have the grace of the 70s and 80s or the power of the later 2000s and 2010s not to mention the constant falls. Also the floor routines for the most part were 20% panting in the corner and boring choreography. I know all of these girls worked hard and I’m not pointing out all that they’re doing wrong I just personally don’t like this gymnastics.
captainbryce1 besides the velvet leotards that are not only ugly but very hot- it’s alright. Floor routines were entertaining and difficulty was getting up there. Bar routines were weird (dead hangs to backward handstands) but beam and floor were pretty good

I know the USA won primarily because other teams had some major errors but it's still awesome that they won at home
"With so little talent" *sticks full in double pike
Followed by scarily flinging herself out of bounds, followed by falling out of her whip to triple twist.
Ikr!! That was a great first pass!!!!
I bet Elfie shit herself a bit then
That routine was awful lol. Elfie wasn't wrong.
Elfie sounds jelly.
did they say that they were barely allowed to even warm up? was the training before this hugely rushed, were many main athletes injured or what’s going on because i’ve never seen anything like this 😳
also- 43:56 holy shit that skill! and with a full twist?! 😱
So they made a major change at this worlds and that was the athletes couldn’t warm up on the apparatus they were using for the actual competition what ended up happening was that multiple teams were then unprepared as a result as many teams did not train for an event like that however one of the reasons the USA girls did so well was because they trained for this exact thing since they were warned ahead of time Marta had the girls at championships do it without warm ups the girls in the gyms did their routines cold as a result they were able to adapt to the no warm up situation
Elfi: I was kinda said that Russia put a gymnast on their team with such little talent Few seconds later takes a huge deduction
it’s kinda amazing how Vault is the lowest scoring event during this time. Today, Beam is.
Beam is? I didn’t know that! That’s insane…beam is so hard!
Damn, Elfie is savage! 😂
Whaattt... awesome! I don't know if I've ever seen this... Wait, have I seen this one? Thank u NF :)
Oh right, Hollie's number..... yep.
At 58:01 I was sure I’d see a wolf turn...
I just don’t understand why Svetlana Khorkina was so revered. I find her gymnastics so awkward and sloppy with flailing arms and legs.
Especially her vault...
I can’t believe that commentator called the Russian girl untalented. She’s not being paid for that type of ignorant remark.
But was she wrong? I mean the girl she was talking about literally messed up her entire routine and destroyed Russia's chances for a medal on just one event.
captainbryce1 she did not put herself on that team, did she? it‘s not her fault, it‘s the team coordinator‘s.
@@bethengel6691 True. I'm just saying the commentators statement was objectively correct. It wasn't an ignorant statement albeit perhaps somewhat insensitive.
She proved her right less than 30 seconds after her saying it by taking that huge fall
@@TheMW2informerso cough cough every gymnast who falls is untalented ? Got u . Sunesa lee must be the most untalented for falling on the beam twice and kicked out of the team with shame
Never noticed before but during Chellisie Memmel's front with a half on beam she hits the beam with her fist! It's obvious she wasn't grabbing for balance but I'm surprised they didn't catch that. Glad as well!
I watched it in slow motion and I don't think she touched it! She's amazing
I don’t think she touched
Chellsie memmel is an inspiration
Chell yeah! I'm 39 and made some goals on paper, thanks to Chellsie. Semi-accomplished one of them already (180° pirouette on one arm on FX [from back extension roll for now]) ... but yes, huge inspiration for so many adult/recreational gymnasts.
She was the glue that held USA together. Her performances were so solid and consistent
The Russian gymnast doing her floor exercise thought she would break her neck😣
Elisa Pendleton I screamed watching this live. Most sincerely could been very injured.
Chelsie carried this on her shoulders! Amazing girls
US celebrating when Munteanu falls but little did they know Romania, was going to show them in Athens. Memmel was awesome on beam otherwise.
They were not celebrating a fall
They were kids for one thing, and were simply excited about the opportunity to be world champions for the first time. What’s comical is where Romania is now- NOWHERE.
Alexa Moreno: 19:42 Elfie’s comment on Alexandra Chevtchenko 11:26
Chelsie-so young and so polished.
That Tim Daggett is so full of bs. He talks like he's best friends with everyone and knows them perfectly. He never shuts up and is frankly the most annoying commentator ever.
carly deserved half of the hype she got.
Considering she was the Olympic all around CHAMPION a year later, I’d say you’re just displaying your own sense of inadequacy. Nice try, epic fail at bringing your small little self up.
You sound like Elfie-a raging bitch
Honestly, for Elfi to say that Alexandra Chevthenko has no talent is just wrong
I was on a gymnastics-themed message board a long time ago and I will never forget the thread where people were asking if Terin Humphry is black LOLOLOLOL so funny.
Oh my Car... Ouch Chellsie.. That Split is Beautiful... But I Felt the Pain...😰😳😁😂😄 love you Chellsie 💓💓💓
I love your channel! ✌️
iamkarenh I love Nutella
Florica Leonida's stare looks just like Ecaterina Szabo.
You follow gymnastics and play flute? Same here!
Ugh.
This is super routine!! 🥇🇺🇸🥈🇹🇩🥉🇦🇺
I agree
Maybe even stronger than ever
Tim says, "Ohhh, that's too bad."
Team USA 🇺🇸 Women's Artistic Gymnastics getting their first time ever gold medal in 2003 World Championships.
Tim went to the Olympics in 1984? And won an individual bronze and team gold?
lol fair call-I think I meant the Al dude but I did say Tim.
Does anyone know if it’s a deduction on a dismount to swing your arms and be off balance if your legs don’t move
depends on the judge and the severity of the swing. if the judge doesn't feel like the gymnast is in control of the landing, they can take a deduction.
It is in the 2017-2020 code (I believe it’s a tenth) but I’m not sure that it was a deduction in this code.
This was painful to watch, there were so many scary falls and misses. And the girls are so tiny and young, it's worrying.
*Anahein* Historical Cycle for Brazil (Daiane dos Santos EF FX)
That's upsetting for Russia and Romania. The floor doomed them both!
What's Tim talking about with the whole "Romania didn't have one athlete score into the 9's at the last world championships" at 20:55? There wasn't a team comp in 2002, and in 2001 Romania clearly dominated and won gold. Someone help me out here?
He said they didn't score into the 9s on bars last championship, and he was right. Romania won team gold in 2001 with 8.525, 8.587, and 8.762 on bars
Would have loved to see everybody healthy and everyone on the America team hit in Athens. Salivating over a Patterson, Kupets, Memmel, McCool, Humphrey, Bhardwaj Team in this quad.
How xhellsie wasn’t on the 2004 team I’ll never know.
She was coming back from injury is the only reason. If she’d been 100% she likely would have been there instead of McCool.
She also had a pretty heavy fall on beam just before nationals and it gave her a nasty bruise on her cheek. That may have been part of it.
The way the evil NBC trio spoke, regardless of how right or wrong their point was, was utterly disgusting, unprofessional and shameful.
Nunovurbznzsodontask eh... I think it would have been better if Elfie ended with “no talent at this level of competition” because it sounded like she meant she had flat out no talent for gymnastics, which I think is easily seen to be untrue.
Evil nbc 😂😂 yeah okay, it wasn’t the best commentary possible but I don’t think it was *that* bad!
Lmfao how dramatic 😂
Those commentators. Wow.
" ive never been so disappointed by the russian team by allowing this gurl with so little talent on thier team "
This team win was great. But the scores were kinda low
It was later discovered through strenuous efforts by the MiB that this Olympics was held during a guarding angel strike.
This isn't the Olympics. Its the 2003 World Championships.
Why didn't Terin do bars? Wasn't she silver in 2004???
jack :D i guess they just liked holly vise more at that point
Terin’s bars were actually not as good as Hollie in 2003. She improved massively in 2004- which ultimately won her silver. Sadly, Hollie’s back injury ended her Olympic chances.
Unpopular opinion if Oana Ban had this beam routine and perfected it she definitely would’ve beaten Ponor! Just think about!
Carly Patterson telling Terin Humphrey that taking out her double Arabian dismount made her routine only out of a 9.6 to justify her 9.312 lol. SV was 9.8
Does anyone know how Memmel was allowed to compete even though they say at 2003 Nationals that she was still 14 and about to turn 15?
Add Munteanu to that question
bbhouk1 prior to the 2009-2012 quad, you could compete in the worlds the year before the olympics if you were going to be turning 16 in the olympic year. ie., shawn johnson turned 16 in 2008 so she was eligible for the 2007 world championships.
Hollie Vise.......cute as a cupcake here.
A cherry one with sprinkles on it yaaaas
,,Schimbă-ți fața, că ăştia te filmează!" îi ordonă Belu, Andreei Moldovan, cu o față neagră de furie. Bietul copil!
CHELL YEAH!
The steaming hot mess this meet was demonstrates just how truly toxic WAG was during this era. 😢
I have been watching this thing for 40 minutes and have yet to see the standings. What a shitty broadcast.
Mary Lou and Nadia 💗💗💗
Wow Chelsie😇
Elfi proved at this meet that she was nothing more than a mouthpiece with legs… even Tim and Al seemed a little annoyed at times with her comments.
SUA a concurat singură? Că alte echipe n-au fost arătate?! 😄
I have never liked Elfie Schlegel. She has no class.
De que se burlas las americas? Si las rumanas fueron mejores que ellas, ante todo lo que es la gimnasia artística no solo acrobacia
Yeah..Romania may have won the '79 world team with out the AA services of Comaneci....however had Comaneci not performed on beam ..Romania would have counted eberle....8.95 beam and Russia would have won...selective memory Marta!
Wow this was a dumpster fire of a competition. …Anyone got any other recommendations for other competitions that went this off the rails?
One of the Visa Championships was rough, I think it might have been 2011?
THE 2000 Olympic All-Around was THEY dumpster fire.
Elfi was always way too harsh
37:15 What the hell?? haha
I am sure Khorkina ate her alive for dinner after that.
It was Elfi Schlegel. She was a Canadian gymnast in the 70s and a truly horrible commentator for entirely too long.
Was she wrong?
For Elfie to say " an athlete with so little talent " is so gormless. I like to see her flip and tumble like so on a championship arena in 2003..sorry Elfie, you brainfarted on this one!!
NBC commentators are so annoying
wow this worlds really sucked.....
What about the 90s? (Kim Zmeskal, Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes, Kerri Strug, Dominique Moceanu, Vanessa Atler, Elise Ray, Lavinia Milosovic, Gina Gogean, Simona Amanar, Svetlana Khorkina, Elena Prodonova, Elena Zamalochikova, Lilia Podkopayeva, Mo Huilan, Liu Xuan)?
captainbryce1 besides the velvet leotards that are not only ugly but very hot- it’s alright. Floor routines were entertaining and difficulty was getting up there. Bar routines were weird (dead hangs to backward handstands) but beam and floor were pretty good
NBC’s commentary disgusting as usual
this is so funny
thumbs up for USA!!
