I thought it was a money issue? Christopher Reeve pretty much resigned himself to the constant cheapening of the franchise. He got a sweet deal to do Superman 4, probably one of the worse movies ever made.

Back in the day, I went to these movies knowing the comic book backstory, and from watching Millennial and Gen Z reviewers watch Marvel movies, the Superman movies and the rest, they don't have much knowledge on the characters and backstory. It probably comes from the fact that back in my day, we didn't have phones, internet, and interactive videogames to occupy our time
Fun fact: The actress who plays Lana Lang in Superman III is Annette O'Toole. Annette O'Toole also played Martha Kent several years later. Superman's Earth mom in the TV series, Smallville. A series focused on a teenage Clark trying to date a young Lana Lang before he ever meets Lois Lane from Metropolis. It was a good popular series. It went 10 seasons!! -OG
Yeah Ilya Salkind wanted Dudley Moore as Mxyzptlk, Frank Langella as Brainiac & Brooke Shields as Supergirl, not to mention Christopher Reeve would have been a similar variation on evil Superman. Regardless to what has previously been said, both Christopher Reeve & Richard Lester really loved this treatment & were bewildered when Warner Bros rejected. Believe it or not the time travel idea was Reeve's
I met Margot Kidder who plays Lois a few years ago and I asked her about Superman III and she was not one for mincing her words. At one time she did date Richard Prior so had nice things to say about him and seemed to imply that he wasn't really that impressed with his own appearance in it. She did not have a good word to say about the producers and only agreed to come back and do 4 because the rights were purchased by difference people. And she had even worse things to say about Superman 4!!!
This was the first Superman movie I saw as a kid, so it was my favorite. Loved all the evil Superman stuff. Clark vs evil Superman is my favorite part of the film. Pryor did a great job. Reeve is triumphs as both good and evil. Excellent reaction, Kay.
Yeah, this is a bit of a cartoon movie. Christopher Reeve's performance of all three characters was great and should've been nominated for the split personalities. Richard Pryor was a very funny comedian, I just felt the script was badly written. Both as a kid and an adult, I still enjoyed this because it's different and entertaining. But once Superman 4 was released, it was almost a tend that the Batman franchise followed. Two great shot films, then once the market was booming, there went good storytelling. And #Kayreacts, if you like it, that's good. Always say how you feel about the movie. That's why we like reactions and reviews. I'm so glad you liked this! I still like Superman and Superman II (all cuts) better but aside from that, I really, really like Superman III and think it's a legitimately _good_ movie, just not a great one. The fight between evil Superman and Clark Kent is one of my favorite sequences in *all* the Superman movies! I just think it was so cool and Reeve did an amazing job! I only wish when Gus changed that "unknown" element in the Kryptonite, it changed the color of it from green to red...red Kryptonite in the comics and other Superman media works _very_ similar to how tar Kryptonite worked in this movie. That opening sequence...if it had been any other movie I think it would be praised. It was an homage to comedy movies from the silent picture days. I think the director, Richard Lester, always just wanted to do something like that not caring what movie, just with Superman III he saw he had the opportunity. I love the sequence except that it's in a Superman movie where it just doesn't fit. About Superman's costume...its origin and characteristics has changed in different Superman continuities. In the Reeve movies, we saw he got it from the Fortress of Solitude which probably made it "super" durable. In the silver age comics it was shown now Martha Kent sewed Clark's baby blankets together to make the outfit, Clark helped her by using his heat vision to cut the material wherever she said. The Kryptonian fibers had the same invulnerability that Superman had. In other continuities Superman's suit is made from Earth fibers and materials, there's nothing special about them until Superman wears them, then it's explained that skintight material on Superman absorbs some of his invulnerability, that's why in a lot of fights it's usually his cape that gets damaged first. Superman has another weakness that's specifically mentioned in his lore...magic. Superman has no special resistance to real magic, it effects him the same as it does any other human. If you decide to watch Supergirl that actually comes into play. Just fair warning, I'll defend Superman III all day but with Supergirl and Superman IV I have no grounds to stand on that they are anything other than really bad movies. Myself, I still like them though...because they are a part of the Reeve films' continuity and/or I always consider it a pleasure and a privilege to see Christopher Reeve play Clark Kent/Superman no matter what. But the movies are still bad... Best Regards!

The idea of computers becoming self-aware and trying to take over the world was quite common in films of the 1980s - I guess everyone was paranoid about computers when few people had them in their home. Wargames came out the same year (and it's still awesome - reaction suggestion) and The Terminator came out the next year. As for the comical intro... It was Richard Lester. The tone of Superman II was more serious before he took over and inserted all kinds of gags. He was known for comedies - A Hard Day's Night is an example of his style. I actually blame the choice of him as a director for the fact there weren't more Salkind produced Superman movies. Cannon would purchase the rights and produce the next film. They would slash the agreed budget in half, leading to some of the worst flying effects you'll ever see - blue-screened instead of front projected as they couldn't afford to use Zoptic lenses (an effects technique employed for just 9 films since it was invented for the first Superman movie).

I can't stand watching reactions to some of my favourite films, and the reviewer is cursing and using vulgar language (Something I NEVER do) When you said the h-- word, and then immediately apologised, I knew that you don't delve into that. I know most people don't like Superman III. I saw this and the previous one in the movies, and I have tons of Superman comic books, so I am a fan from way back. That said, I actually like this film (but I do like the 2nd one better) I don't know why it gets the bad rap that it does. That said, I am really looking forward to your reaction to part IV! She should stay away from Superman 4. This one is great! It is basically a comedy, making fun of itself. 4 is just horrendous in every way. Part 4 usually does that. Remember Jaws 4? Yikes!

Far weaker than the first two, but I love the junkyard fight, O'Toole's great, Reeve's great as always, and the turning of the sister into a diet Borg/Cyberman is pretty freaky for a kid. It also benefits from comparisons to...the fourth film *shudder*.

Yeah, Superman III is almost comedic. I think that's largely because of 2 things. They switched director Richard Donner for Richard Lester, who likes comedic scenes. The other reason is that we have comedian actor Richard Pryor in the movie. The computer geek. The combination of both really set the tone for the film. Unfortunately, not in a good way. The majesty of Superman was more pronounced and epic in the first two films. In this movie, Superman appears to be an extra next to comedian Richard Pryor. 🥸 -OG

It's a shame the Salkind's constantly cheapened the movies. This movie is acceptable, but the first movie Superman was not played for gags. I don't understand why some directors feel the need to put in a gag or joke every scene. This literally killed the Star Wars sequels as well.
Sam Raimi and Marvel borrowed so much from the first three Superman films for the first three Spider-Man films. 1st film - origin and introduction of the love story. 2nd film - hero renounces their powers for their girlfriend before realizing being a hero is their destiny. 3rd film - hero becomes evil (and both feature hero dancing horribly).
This is why this movie is regarded as the worst in the trilogy, it's too slapstick to be a Superman movie in the first place, too much Richard Pryor, and not enough of Christopher Reeve. I'm not even counting the fourth disaster. Try "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut", it's better than the theatrical cut, the story is not as goofy as this one (almost), it has its flaws, sure, but it's better, in my opinion. I personally like Superman 3 much more than Superman 2. Please don't watch Superman 4 though. It will crush your dreams. I agree with you that the evil superman part should have been longer. They started it off as a comedy relief sort of to balance out the parts where superman becomes evil, because that was pretty dark.
Welcome to the downfall of the Superman franchise. This, 4 and Supergirl effectively ended Superman movies until 2006. ...Which THEN ended the movies AGAIN until 2013. Superman on TV was plentiful, and often good.
Not the best Superman movie. I find it enjoyable if hokey. Has some good scenes in it. I choose to like it for what it is rather than crap on its flaws.

What Superman 3 could have been if they went with the producer’s 2 movie idea of Brainiac, Bizarro and Supergirl being intertwined.

This is why this movie is regarded as the worst in the trilogy, it's too slapstick to be a Superman movie in the first place, too much Richard Pryor, and not enough of Christopher Reeve. I'm not even counting the fourth disaster. Try "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut", it's better than the theatrical cut, the story is not as goofy as this one (almost), it has its flaws, sure, but it's better, in my opinion. I personally like Superman 3 much more than Superman 2. Please don't watch Superman 4 though. It will crush your dreams. I agree with you that the evil superman part should have been longer. They started it off as a comedy relief sort of to balance out the parts where superman becomes evil, because that was pretty dark.

Welcome to the downfall of the Superman franchise. This, 4 and Supergirl effectively ended Superman movies until 2006. ...Which THEN ended the movies AGAIN until 2013. Superman on TV was plentiful, and often good.

Not the best Superman movie. I find it enjoyable if hokey. Has some good scenes in it. I choose to like it for what it is rather than crap on its flaws.

Screw Clark Kent Superman 3 should have just had the dark Superman the whole movie. He even looked more handsome, and his sounded way more badass!
