There was a cinema film! Leslie Howard had a big hit with it in the 30s and after WW2 started, he made Pimpernel Smith, in which he helped people escape from the nazis!

The 1934 version, starring Lesley Howard, is great.

Sink meh! This is my best friend's favorite film. She introduced me to it a couple decades ago when she held an ("old fashioned") "in person" watch party to share this charming film with me and several others.

As soon as you posted this, I was like YESSS YESSSS!!!! I used to check this movie out alll the time as a kid because I started studying the French Revolution when I was 10-years old and absolutely fell in love with it. I never read the book, but I would rent it at Blockbuster and I remember making a monocle out of a long paper clip and would pretend to be Percy. This has always been one of my favorite movies of alll time and even @ 38 I remember all the times myself. I am happy youre feeling better Kay and that your hair is growing back beautifully!!! I hope you have a wonderful Spring #KayReacts #TheScarletPimpernel ❤

I love that you watch what you enjoy and give attention to some older classics that are kind of forgotten.

Agreed. There are a ton of reactors who cover hits from the 80s or what have you, and no shade on them for doing it, but I'm always happy to see older and more niche movies also get reactions. There is so much great, lesser known, material out there.

Also my favourite book and film. Have you seen the miniseries with Richard E Grant as the pimpernel? Highly recommend!

Sir Ian was really quite darling back then, even as a villain. I always loved this one as a kid. I’m old enough that I got to see it aired on tv when it was first shown. They never do the ending right, though. I can understand the difficulty but I do wish I could once see the part where she’s despairing, all tied up, until she hears an unmistakeable English, “Damn!”

I have noticed a few HD versions pop up on TH-cam over the years (and then been taken down a few months after upload 🙄) so someone out there has attempted to restored it 🤷🏼‍♀️
And bless you for reacting to this underrated gem! Sink meh, more people should know about it! 🧐

I think Anthony Andrews more than manages to capture the same insouciance as Leslie Howard. And who can resist the charms of Jane Seymour?
There's a comment that references Leslie Howard's WW2 adaptation of The Scarlet Pimpernel, Pimpernel Smith. Good on them.
I happen to enjoy another Anthony Andrews TV remake of another classic Hollywood adventure movie... Ivanhoe.
Last but not least... Daffy Duck has a cartoon version of the Pimpernel ...The Scarlet Pumpernickel, 1950. And even a version of another swashbuckler...Robin Hood...Robin Hood Daffy, 1958.

I saw this movie when it came out! Totes forgot until I saw the rhyme; "That demmed, elusive, Pimpernel."
You did a very good job controlling your quoting; I never would have known you had seen it before. 🙄
You know who would make a good Pimpernel? Tom Hiddleston.

Baby man? Ian McKellan was in his 40s here! (But I know what you mean if you've only seen him in movies made in the last 25 years)

The one with Leslie Howard was good but Anthony Andrews was my favorite Scarlet Pimpernel. I also enjoyed him on the TV version of Ivanhoe with Olivia Hussey.

Initially I thought it strange you chose this Andrews/Seymour version over the Howard/Oberon, but childhood delights are forever imprinted, Oui? If you are interested, there are also TV miniseries versions from 1955 and 1999.
And yes, I liked the book versions of both The Scarlet Pimpernel and Zorro. Those are a tenth as good as The Count of Monte Cristo (which is still a complement! ). Unfortunately... the Count is still waiting for a decent film adaptation - perhaps the French version being released this summer will suffice?
