Make the Shrunken Skull - EASY tiki recipe!

  • Most likely a descendant from another classic tiki known as the skull and bones, the shrunken skull is a perfect introduction to tiki cocktails! This recipe calls for four ingredients, all equal parts, so it's quite simple. Two rums are used, and without the addition of numerous other ingredients (like many other tiki recipes), it makes it easy to see how separate rums work together in a cocktail. I'm using a Demerara and a gold rum, but I fully encourage trying different rums and finding your favorite combination. This is a simple way to make a classic tiki your very own!

3 years late to the party, I have to say that it is nuts how great this cocktail is with many different rum mixtures. A float of Rum Fire can also be a massive boost to the character of the drink, in case the rum mixture doesn't quite pan out.

I’ve made this for myself a few times the. For some friends and the wife since watching this and I must say it’s a crowd pleaser. Even next to the famous Mai Tai this one was rated even higher. For the rums, I’ve been using a double Denizen blend, which really gets me 4 rums. Denizen Vatted Dark (80% Demerara/20% Agricole and 100 proof) and Denizen Aged White (80% Trinidad/20% Jamaica).

I made myself two Hurricanes yesterday (by Cara Devine's recipe) and it sounds a lot like this Shrunken Skull. Here's what I had in each: 60ml Appleton Estate Signature Blend, 60 ml Plantation 3 Star, 60 ml home made passion syrup and 60 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice. The passion syrup made it really sweet as I assume your grenadine also does.

Any Demerara should work since DDL (Demerara Distillers Limited) is the only rum distillery in Guyana. Their own brand is El Dorado. But do beware, El Dorado has added sugar whereas something like Hamilton does not. There’s a Denizen with Demerara but it’s also 20% Rhum Agricole. Just using that could make an interesting variant.
