Ummm.... Maybe I've always been shorting people on booze but ummm an ounce each on all 5 alcohols is like three quarters more booze than us supposed to be in it.
1 oz of each! INSANE!!... I typically make it with 1/2 oz each spirit. Love your ratio of booze to coke! That's proper! Too many people add way too much coke which just makes it taste like rum & coke. Cheers!
Absolutely right. Where I'm from the max liquor a drink can have in it is 3oz. That's a half shot each (plus the whiskey/bourbon that should be in there) then the rest is sour mix. Only a splash of coke. It's there for color, not for taste
I have made quite many of em and also had... pouring a 30ml dose will "kill" people and made the alcohol taste really strong. I also just stir it a bit and not shake it. Try it with 15 ml of each but keep the lemon on 25. Highball glass. I love your work and I have seen many of your videos. Take care
I am impressed by your tasting notes satire and how you manage to inject a "let's make this super-popular, kinda dangerous, highly marked-up drink" vibe into your overall "this drink is ridiculous" demeanour.
Definitely takes me back to college days. A local restaurant (Rafferty's) in Bowling Green, KY sold them for $3.95 on Monday Happy Hours and served them in large Mason jars. They were so good. Another local restaurant on Friday happy hours sold them for $4.00 a pitcher.. our table that night had way too many to mention (16) and amazed we all got home safely...we did have a DD. Memories....
I pour the cola into a separate glass before starting the cocktail, so it loses most of the carbonation. Gives it a smoother "tea" taste. But that's probably just me being weird & always finding a way to complicate things. Idk. Just discovered this channel btw, & love it. Keep up the great work!
Oregon resident. I waited tables through my 20s. Long Island where I worked was a half oz each of gin, rum, vodka, triple sec, then an oz each of sweet & sour and coke. One popular variant was replacing the coke with cranberry juice and a splash of chambord.
When I was bartending in Tel Aviv I used to advise people under 20 (age drinking in TA is 18) against Long Island Iced Tea, because in most cases they couldn't hold their liquor. I warned them that if they puke, they clean. And so it was.
My favorite drink! One time I had two of these not knowing what was in them. We got up to leave and bam! It was a rough few hours because I was not (and still am) not one that likes a buzz or worse, drunk. I still love the drink but never drink enough of it to feel it. I have found that if they open the coke cola and let it sit a bit it is much better when poured in the drink.
Born and raised on Long Island. The first Long Island Iced Tea was in Chicago in Wrigley Field where the front bar was run by Captain Morgan. Growing up I always considered it the equivalent of the Douglas Adams' "Pan Galactic Gargleblaster" and it would probably be the second to last thing I would ever order except for that one night when ... sure I'll have just one (and only one).
Absolutely my favorite drink. I had a friend years ago that was bartending and she would make them for me. Well one night her pouring skill were so on the mark that I downed 3 because it tasted like an actual lemon iced tea. Super dangerous and delicious 😋. Good thing i lived literally around the corner 😅 about 100'.
Anders. I love your channel. Bringing back proper drinking culture is necessary. Thanks for your work. Seems simple, but you’re doing yeoman’s work, brother. Cheers!
Potion equality is very important in a L.I. I agree with your recipe completely, I like to use half measures of lemon and lime, and three dashes of angostura bitters. Try old man bishop’s version with bourbon and maple syrup. Great version of the L.I. I always tell my customers “There’s no limit, but there IS a record!” Unfortunately my state changed the ounces per container laws a few years ago so the current recipe is 3/4 oz of each ingredient but the taste is the same. 26 states have 2oz per container laws so L.I.s in those states suck. Texas is one of them and most corporate restaurants use the 2oz limit. :-(. In Texas I ordered a bunch of shots, and mixed four L.I.s myself at the table. The bartender said I couldn’t legally do that, and I told him it was okay because I wasn’t the bartender! After the second round he just started making them the way I wanted. Pretty soon everyone in the bar was ordering them. Fun times.
I like to replace the coke with Doctor pepper. Think Doctor pepper is make by coke, so it's essential coke with pepper. Great summer drink. Being British we get few hot days to enjoy it to the max but it tastes as great in the rain.
Yeah, it's quite unfortunate. I got spoiled working at a bar in Texas during college because the bartenders would make L.T.'s the right way for their own. Can't get a quality one anywhere else so I just end up making them for myself when I'm in the mood.
@@davidvarley1812 Dr Pepper is not made by Coca-Cola, and it does not contain pepper. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad mixer, though. Dr Pepper is based in Dallas, my old home town (Coca-Cola is based in Atlanta).
I love this channel. It's my favorite of all the bartender channels on TH-cam. The videos tend to be a little long but I guess I don't mind sitting thru some of the entertainment/wisenheimerness to get to the meat and potatoes of it. you know, the actual recipe. I know there are time stamps but some of the quips and cracks give me a good chuckle.
You did a great job on selling this one that I had to make it, right after watching this video. Not sure if you had some shots before you recorded or not. Very entertaining for sure
As I see others saying, I too only do .5 oz pours for each alcohol. The lemon juice and syrup is really up to taste but I usually do .5 oz of each or 1oz of premade sour mix. I also shake it then strain it over ice into a cup where it fills up about 2/3 of the way and then float with coke because I like mine to be a bit more coke heavy usually. It definitely masks the alcohol better, and I usually drink quite a few of them when I make them at home. At the bars, I usually go for at least two if they're made well enough (sometimes it's too boozy and it doesn't mask the alcohol at all).
My wife and I met while attending Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. BALL State, as in the Mason Jars. The five Ball brothers who founded the company also funded the expansion of a small state teacher's college into a large university. That being the case, and college town bars catering to the fan base, when you would order a Long Island Iced Tea in the bars around campus, it usually arrived in a wide-mouth Ball canning jar.
I'm a bit of a LIAT connoisseur, having tried a lot of different ways. If you build one with all of your favorite higher end spirits then you'll have a whole different experience. It's magical.
On a cruise I took last year, I drank the a really bad dark and stormy mixed the angriest bar tender on the cruise ship, then proceeded to the martini bar to have the sweetest rusty nail I have ever drank. I then ordered a Long Island Ice Tea to get the dark and stormy and the rusty nail off the taste buds. I remember that day very fondly.
Anders, Have been watching your videos and built a bar full of drinks and glasses around your suggestions - tonight made our first cocktail, a Long Island Tea to your menu. Itbwas great, keep up the brilliant videos, you make it exciting and fun, we love them
Hands down, this IS the best recipe for a Long Island Iced Tea. I have made this for some very critical guests, and they were all more than satisfied. It is also a favorit with my wife. I am using: Appleton Estate Signature, Tanqueray Dry Gin, Wodka Gorbatschow (which is an alright vodka) and Sierra Tequila Reposado.
When volume bartending in California, I omit the tequila mostly because it allows me to pour four bottles in one swing. Having a smoother profile is an added benefit. I pour .5 oz. each and add 2 oz. sweet & sour with just a tiny splash of coke. Give it a quick roll and serve it up, and to be honest it actually does taste like iced tea.
Ok I gave it a try but had to use what is in my cabinet. I used to drink these for years in college. I am from NJ so common there. I am much older but, hey, gave it a try tonight. It is kicking me. I definitely need to eat dinner. I had vodka, rum, coke, Montenegro, Martini secco, and yeah that was enough. I definitely will try another cocktail. These have been my hobby lately but this one, I will leave to the college students. Cheers.
I completely forgot about this cocktail. Thank you very much for the video. As a result, had to look for lemons and demerara sugar at 10pm. But it was worth it.
I wanted one of these as more of a traditional sour, so used dark spirits + angostura instead of coke. it worked really well and is now my go to "long island". 1 whisky 1 dark rum 1 reposado tequila 1 gin 1 triple sec 2 lemon juice 1 maple syrup dashes of angostura bitters. shake
My twist is replacing the rhum by cuchaça, and adding one part peach liquor and half part crème de cassis (when I'm not using expensive brands, wich is most of the time for this kind of drink). It really brings the drink closer to what you would expect of an ice tea, and it's even more boozy so 2 birds with 1 stone
I love this channel . I'm from Trinidad and the first video i saw was the one about Angostura Bitters Shots . Long Island Ice tea, is my go to drink because i can just order ONE and then I'm done. But there is one drink that would mess you up even more and that's an over proof Zombie. That is a Zombie made with a 150+ proof white rum instead on a 40% rum.
My personal recipe is a little different: 0.5oz of each liquor and 0.75oz of both simple syrup and lemon juice. Hadn’t tried it with Demerara syrup before, will have to try it!
the way I do it at my bar is 12.5ml (half a uk measure) of our house spirits, Olmeca Blanco, Bacardi, Absolut and Beefeater, (the uk doesn't allow more than 50 ml of spirits per drink) 12.5ml of Cointreau, 25 ml of gomme and 25 ml of lemon juice. it's shaken and pored over ice and then the coke is layered on top. it's so interesting to see different takes on cocktails.
This got me wasted for the first time. I was in some club and I was feeling it so I chugged my first, then pretty soon after I drank another and another. From that point I don't really remember much except for ordering a fourth one and I blacked out for 3 hours and threw up in the middle of the club. I did not know the power of this one until it took me down xD
Bartender in Australia here. The Australian Responsible Serving of Alcohol indicates that no more than two shots should be served to someone in one go, so the long island ice teas are made with half an ounce of all the spirits, standard amount of lemon and simple syrup, and about the same volume of coke as the shaken ingredients. It is also served layered.
Sound as weak as the ones I buy in UK bars. Still a fantastic drink but not got the kick ass strength I make at home. Enjoy Christmas and have a happy and healthy 2022.
Watching this just after finishing a Monkey Gland on an August Sunday afternoon. Long Island Iced Tea reminds of dancing in 1984 at Ripples in Belmont Shore. Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end.
One of my favorites. First time was at a club called "Mardi Gras" in Long Beach, Ca. $10 in a beach bucket and would last all night. Fantastic drink and I do not recall any Tequila in the mix.
You are correct about west coast “long islands”. We do not use tequila. When I bartended down the street from Disney, tourist central, i would actually ask the guest if they were from the east or west coast;)
I recently started a side project of bartender for hire in my area. I am definitely reaching for the higher standard and looking to keep honing in for achievement. I gotta say, Anders and Ozzie (forgive the misspelling or wrong name completely), you folks are tremendous! Great knowledge, great fun for teaching and would definitely be a blast to throw back a few with. Cheers and thank you for your passion and education......

Hello :D My regular bar in Porto, Bar Americain at the Monumental Palace Hotel, has created a special version of this cocktail for me. It's called the "Queen John Long Island Iced Tea" 30 ml Vodka (Absolut Elyx, preferably) 30ml Tequila 30ml White Rum 30ml Gin 30ml GRAND MARNIER (yes, trust me) 20-25ml Simple Syrup 30ml Fresh Lemon Juice Coca Cola as a topper. Cocktail is shaken and poured over ice in a chilled highball glass seasoned with a bit of absinthe. After that open the coke, take a shot, give it to the costumer in a separate glass, and pour the rest down the drain, where it belongs. After you order the second one, they'll call you a cab.
this is generally my go-to if i've had a rough shift at work, though i like to add lime as well as lemon juice. not sure what it is about it but it just works for me either way, i love a good long island iced tea
new subscriber, started with the newer videos and came back to this one, I kind of like Anders drinking during the video, especially a long island... haha
Nice video mate, the improvised dégustation with your friend was also very pleasant to watch and.... I'm very fan of this cocktail because 1 is enough 😅
I appreciate the detailed instructions and tips provided in the video, making it easy to recreate this cocktail at home. Cheers to the ultimate Long Island Iced Tea recipe! 🍹👌
This is generally my go to when I feel pressured to order so the waitress/waiter can get on about their business. Also a good one to drink with your meal.
2:48 minutes in and i have to say "THANK YOU I FUCKING LOVE YOU! THIE DRINK IS SUPPOSED TO BE SHAKEN AND TOPPED WITH COKE! ITS NOT A BUILD A DRINK DAMNIT!" thats how it's supposed to be made!
The drawback of using premium spirits in a drink like this is that they are all trying to "speak" to you at the same time. While distinctive spirits are great on their own, or in a mixed drink where the individual spirit is allowed to shine or be forward, in This case they battle with each other for supremacy , which confuses the palate. I suppose someone looking for a " complex" cocktail could argue that That is what makes a premium version distinctive/ interesting... but I don't think that's what this one is all about. A homogeneous blend producing a smooth overall flavour is what makes this one a great Tranquilizer... Simple syrup with a triple dash of Angostura can also bring it forward just that little bit, if you don't have / make a Demerara syrup. Loved the video. Subbed. Keep up the great content.
I went to the New England School of Bartending (Boston) in 1992, the dark ages of the cocktail....then the specs were 1/4 oz of each spirit, 1 oz "sour mix", top with Coke. I made a riff which I called "Long Iver Iced Tea" and posted somewhere on the web, the recipe is still floating around today - the main difference was simply adding a tropical note by subbing "Malibu" coconut rum for the regular white rum. These day's I've updated for the 21st century, no longer use sour mix (not allowed in my home bar). Specs are 3/4 oz of each spirit: Espolon tequila, Beefeater, Tito's, Cointreau, and Cruzan coconut rum. 1 oz lemon, 3/4 simple...top with Mexican Coke (I like it better, has real sugar). I serve in a Collins glass with a spear of clear ice, lemon wedge garnish. Cheers.
Another YT algorithm suggestion hit. I immediately subbed after watching one of your other vids & have been going through your catalog. I really enjoy your channel. Come on, everybody loves the bartender, right? I seem to remember when I worked bar during college, that when I made this it also had Kahlua in the recipe & instead of coke it was soda water. Does this sound like legit version or variation of this drink? Any time you need volunteer tasters, I'm sure I can find a way to make time. D
I tended bar in the 70s and we always did 1oz. of all the white liquors and 1/2 oz. of triple sec and a 1/2 oz. of Amaretto. Lemon juice, simple syrup and the splash of Coke. I think the Amaretto helped.
Love your videos. I usually don't add any sweet syrups for mine, since the cola adds alittle sweet taste. But I'll have to try your version too, cause it looked great. Also, Texas Tea. It's all the same ingredients as a long island, but add a shot of whiskey/bourbon too. 🥃
I always add equal parts Coke and Lemonade. Really smooths out the drink... especially if using "harsh" rail booze. Try it. I hate when some bars use Sweet/Sour Mix in their long islands.

Let’s be honest, to improve on the Long Island just add more alcohol…. All of them. Or just pair it with a shot. And a comfy pillow.

Only downside, ice melts.
Though in my experience it doesn't last long enough for that to be a problem.

0.5oz of each liquor and 0.75oz of both simple syrup and lemon juice.
Thank you for the amazing content! I immediately tried out this recipe and it was pretty amazing. Perfect drink to share with my lady.
Eres un hombre simpático y tus cócteles son geniales. Mil gracias!
I get the feeling Anders had a full one of these before the video :) hehe
Finally a drink channel that is fun! Thank you!
Anders, you awesome man!! Love your videos, my wife and I just keep trying all your recipes!!!!
Sometimes life calls for a drink, and that drink is the Long Island Iced Tea.
I drank one of these in college. It tasted like gasoline. I've never looked back, but now... you made it tempting. Well done...
🤣🤣🤣 the ending was the best! I love you guys! 😂
Hello :D
My regular bar in Porto, Bar Americain at the Monumental Palace Hotel, has created a special version of this cocktail for me.
It's called the "Queen John Long Island Iced Tea"
30 ml Vodka (Absolut Elyx, preferably)
30ml Tequila
30ml White Rum
30ml Gin
30ml GRAND MARNIER (yes, trust me)
20-25ml Simple Syrup
30ml Fresh Lemon Juice
Coca Cola as a topper.
Cocktail is shaken and poured over ice in a chilled highball glass seasoned with a bit of absinthe.
After that open the coke, take a shot, give it to the costumer in a separate glass, and pour the rest down the drain, where it belongs. After you order the second one, they'll call you a cab.
this is generally my go-to if i've had a rough shift at work, though i like to add lime as well as lemon juice. not sure what it is about it but it just works for me
either way, i love a good long island iced tea
When in L. V. On Freemont st, go to the Whiskey Licker and get a Long Island and do a walk about. The best way to explore the Freemont show. Really.
new subscriber, started with the newer videos and came back to this one, I kind of like Anders drinking during the video, especially a long island... haha
Speaking of cocktail markups!
Would you consider making a video on pricing out beverages and/or liquors?
Fav drink. I usually get it made with raspberry vodka. It makes it even better
Thank you idol for showing us this cocktail ♥️
Nice video mate, the improvised dégustation with your friend was also very pleasant to watch and.... I'm very fan of this cocktail because 1 is enough 😅
Man you're sweating personality and charm, brother. I was laughing during the whole video hshhahahaa cheers.
I am almost 30 , from houston tx and this is my go to drink lol i usually drink 5 max of em when i drink more than 2
I went to the New England School of Bartending (Boston) in 1992, the dark ages of the cocktail....then the specs were 1/4 oz of each spirit, 1 oz "sour mix", top with Coke. Cheers.
Thx for update....
The real sugar coke is a great way to get away from corn sweetner taste
Brilliant video having us watch you drink this thing. I gotta have one right now!
Schmeckt gut
In der Tat, sehr wohlschmeckend!
Best episode yet
I always add equal parts Coke and Lemonade. Really smooths out the drink... especially if using "harsh" rail booze. Try it.
I hate when some bars use Sweet/Sour Mix in their long islands.
