Lions with more testosterone have blacker manes. They're also more aggressive and hunt more often. Years of watching NatGeo taught me this.

The ladies love the dark maned lions the most . Something to do with genetics .Survival of the fittest .The more aggressive the better they are at protecting the pride.

theodore roosavelt poparlizred the hunting of the lion and you could say since before fdr he was the myst popular president with imperialism still incrianed in the american mind he popurlarlized big game hunting in general which led to the teddy bear being invented only fueled the fire and exciment of hunting excotic animals and remember at the time erupean contries colinized africa and also remember at that time america was a minor super power after ww2 we became a major super power and also white mained lions have made a huge comback wich increased hunting of the animal very attractive sadly though the poaching of lions hasnt really been adressed also during the time of late 1800s and early 1900 they were pretty overpopulized and they were a nesiance to europen contries colonizing africa who incoraged lion killing the future of the lion and other african animals is uncertain i know thers eraes in my reply but i can care less

Chuck Norris, Not necessarily there are brown mane, red name, yellow mane lions that are also healthy young lions.
The darker the lion's mane when in their prime, the higher levels of tesrosterone, and one of the reasons lionesses are so atracted by black mane lions, this is according to scientists.

I just want to let everyone know that the reason why they're saying it's rare is because it's a rare Ethiopian lion. These lions are known for their exceptionally long and extremely dark manes. This particular lion is in the bale national park in southern Ethiopia.
Bale national park lions are strictly forest lions, they range in altitudes up to 14,000 ft high in the mountains. The habitat of Bale lions ranges from tropical rainforest in the lowest altitudes, to temperate forests higher up, cold grasslands at even higher altitudes and then alpine tundras at the highest parts of the national park, so of course the lions have adapted to this diverse range of mountain climates.
Lions high in the mountains have thicker fur to survive the cold and also develop much longer manes than low altitude lions, their manes cover the majority of their bodies and also extends down to the groin area. The lion in the video lives in the low altitude part of the bale national park, which is the reason why his mane is not as large and his coat is not as thick. Lions in the forests and mountains of Ethiopia are quite stocky and robust in build but are generally slightly shorter than savanna lions, all of which is due to their forested and mountainous habitats.

Well, Atlas lions were not the only lions to have that physical appearance. Every type of lion can have that appearance if they live in cooler climates, that's why Ethiopian mountain lions are able to grow those large manes, because of the cooler mountain climates.
