I live off $1800-1900 including rent in NYC easy and still have money for savings and occasional takeout, movie, and splurges on clothes and whatnot. Work 35 hours a week and have plently time to hang out, go to the beach, hobby, everything. Rent in a nice brownstone on a nice block in Bed Stuy and work as a cook. Generally a very good quality of life. Very doable if you budget, are smart, and realistic. With the amount of money these guys blow a month on renting downtown and excess spending they could easily be paying a mortgage on a proper apartment or brownstone in NYC

I was a young single mom in NYC- there are cheaper ways. If I had $30.00 a DAY I would be feeling lucky! Fruit and veggie stands are your friend. I would buy chicken in bulk for 12.00 and freeze individual portions and would still manage to make meals that would feed us for two days. My pizza place had $10.00 for a large pie specials on Sundays. We would buy a large pizza which was HUGE for two of us and freeze the rest. This is definitely a privileged persons idea of poor. There are actual poor people in NY surviving on WAY less the $30.00 a DAY.

NYC is not cheap, but if you know how to hack some of the expensive costs, you can save time & money by taking advantage of all the City has to offer. Get an electric scooter/bike, no car no insurance, take mass transit, find some of the cheaper grocery stores to shop at (like you did in Chinatown), take advantage of all the free stuff the City has to offer like strolls through Central Park, there's tons of public parks in every borough, there's also tons of free events and functions going on, you just have to find them (internet)... NYC living is very hackable.

Get a burrito bowl and ask for 3 to 4 soft shells or a burrito shell on the side, ask for extra rice then ask for more and let until it’s piled up, extra extra veggies. Be nice and ask how each persons day is you’ll end up with more meat and toppings, get the sour cream on the side (doesn’t reheat well), get multiple salsa’s, ask for extra pico and hot salsa on the side, extra extra cheese. All still the same price and you can make your tacos or burrito on the side and still save half for lunch tomorrow.
Get your nespresso knock off pods at Trader Joe’s. Great video, awesome advice...

Y'all wanna really talking about living cheap in NYC? There was a time I made $20 last a week! I'm from the Bronx and Trader Joe's is not affordable if you're from a low income community, we got Western Beef lmao, shop for 2 weeks worth of food there and you'll spend way less still, if you know you're going out bring food made from home, if you can't bc of the type of activity you're doing theres $1-$2 pizza places or any bodega will do. Wanna go for a night out and have fun? Look for lounges with deals, one near me (Mamajuana Cafe) does free hookah Thursdays with $6 drinks but luckily as a female Friday nights are free open bar for ladies from 11pm-1am lol! After Sunday brunch they do free hookahs on Sunday evenings, want something more chilled and not hype? In Manhattan Go to 1,2,3, burger shot beer, $1 burger, $2 Shots, $3 Beers, food is mad good and it's cheep af!

I only visited NYC recently and spent a few days there, mainly exploring Manhattan. I was expecting it to be SUPER expensive, but really I didn't notice a huge difference between NYC and Colorado. Food costed the same, so did coffee. I don't use public transportation at home so can't compare, but using subway would definitely add up over time, so I walked A LOT. My impression was that, aside from rent, NYC was very compatible to Colorado. Makes me wonder if my state is more expensive than we think here, or is it that NYC is not as expensive as people claim.
