In case anyone is wondering about the hi-hats that hit under the crashes and the open playing style throughout. \/
I started to hear simultaneous hi-hats and crashes a lot of the time (not all of the crash hits), which was unexpected. So… I did some looking at live footage and it turns out the drummer that was with Avenged Sevenfold for this album (Arin Ilejay) plays it open-handed, allowing for what you see in the video. It took a lot of listening to the studio track and the isolated drums to get them accurate. If you want an easier way to play the song - ignore the hi-hats that fall under the crashes and play the crashes with your right hand. Enjoy!
This is how I play, makes more sense to me as I can keep the pulse going with my hand. I'm left handed too which adds to the fun.
