In a world of objectification, personifying notions and materials around us just makes us better people, to say the least. It’s a wonderful short. The thought process itself must be fulfilling enough and I can relate to the thrill looking back on proud ideas. Please never stop having fine thoughts and senses like what you put into this short and komorebi, just to cite two of my favourites!
Thanks for making this Wes. It's lovely. I wonder if the interpretation that is said is what you intended it to be. I guess part of the beauty is everyone can have different interpretations. Really curious what's on your mind when you write it. I feel like some of the objects are like family members, perhaps parents/children relationship.
hi friend. i come back to this every year, if not more. your videos have really changed my life. i wish i could dive into your thoughts bc they honestly resonate so much with me. i messaged david choi on fb bc somehow we’re friends on it 🥲but meeting you and understanding your thoughts behind your shorts & how they relate to your experiences would be such a gift ty for everything you’ve done!! i miss your shorts :( it’s 5:30 am and ugh my heart resonates with them w every bit
I finally figured it out... the 5 senses of the relationship: 1.Glasses- what they see together 2.Umbrella- their touch 3.Telephone- their communication (heard and spoken) 4.Scarf- their scent 5.Mug- their taste -can i just say- AWHHHH
And when you think about it. This is kinda of a prequel to Musing's End. Meaning she's in the process of finding a boyfriend and when he became all those senses, five objects fell.
WaitingToFade because Wes uses symbolism. Phil's shorts are kinda easy to understand because he writes straight about emotions. I was halfway through the video before I understood what was happening here.
The brilliance in this is that in the mere 10 minutes it runs for, it makes you emotionally developed in something with no thought, no voice, and no mind that you've actually thought for. Something that shows you, falling in love with someone that needs you is hard. Because In time, they might find a better foundation. Somone that provides more than you ever could. When they leave, you shatter, unable to pick yourself up, because you've tricked yourself into thinking they needed you more than anything, when in reality, it's just the bitter opposite. You need them back, but they're strong, and you wonder. Did she ever love me? Or did she just need me...? But it's not always like that, but sometimes... The frigid, choking and blisteringly painful truth is... Falling in love is easy. Doing it wrong is just as easy. And sometimes when you think you've fallen, you think it's a good thing. But you realise that sometimes falling... Means shattering.
He fell in love but those who dare to fall can only break I remember it, our first kiss. Its seems so far away now when it used to feel so close. It was a cold night, the wind was blew relentlessly, snow softly beating the windows struggling to come to the warmth. Shivering she entered the house, a gust following her close behind, that night I wished I could hold her close let my heat warm her tried, chilled bones. That night my wish came true. It was warm and subtle, chocolatly and slightly minty, it was the kiss I was anxiously waiting for. Body against body, the cold was quickly banished from her. It was over all to soon. Pulling away, but not quite separating, we breathed each others breaths. I couldn't tell the difference between dream and reality but it didn't really matter. This reality was a dream. I love her. I still do. All the way to the end. Till the very end. -Cup
Ranking from least unfortunate to most unfortunate story (with reasons) 1. Umbrella (He can still hold her hands most of the time, rain or shine) 2. Scarf (He can still snuggle her during winter) 3. Eyeglass (I think he is the most intimate to her among the five seeing her fresh beauty during the morning but he become less used when Contact Lenses came, however, the girl may occasionally use him but maybe just at home) 4. Telephone (Becomes extremely useless and an antic or home decoration because of Smart phones) 5. Mug (HE FREAKIN' DIES!!!)
Plus the mug kissed her. And she kisses someone else. That's why N. 4 is a toughy between the scarf and the telephone for me... but... I guess the telephone... idk...
This has to be one of the most beautiful and powerful short I have ever seen so far hands down! To me this video represents two differet aspects of a relationship. The ordinary house objects loose importance to the girl and overtime they are forgotten or replaced. This is something which happens in real life when someone who used to be close and important to us loose importance we tend to drift farther away. However on the flip side we may loose interest in someone/something when we develope an interest for someone/something else. And we can see that from the video. Now what's interesting is the sequence of the objects also represents the order in which a relationship developes: 1) Glasses : eye contact between two ppl 2) Telephone: Communication between two individuals. 3) Umbrella: (Here represents touch) Which we can assume that the relationship have gotten to the level of having a physical contact. 4)The muffler: (Here smell) Which means they are probably very close to each other and knows each other's scent which signifies intimacy. 5)Mug : Kiss...which is pretty much self explanatory..:D Thanks if u read my lengthy comment .. :D
The scores are just as big an element as the story itself, it's very moving music, and conveys a lot of emotion not spoken in the script. Hard to pic a fave....
I remember showing very close friends this and at the end they were like "okay?" I stopped sharing things i absolutely cherished to people. They're not gonna ruin this video.
I used to watch this 10 years ago when I was 14. I was looking forward to having a relationship where I could feel all these feelings. 2016 I met someone that I fell in love with and that fell in love with me. We shared our lives and lived together for three of those four years. 2020 we broke up, and I could only feel like the smashed cup. Unlike the cup I think that I will be healed and that maybe some day I can relive love without being broken and forgotten. Thanks for this classic wong fu and especially thanks to Wesley Chan.
I re-visit this video every once in awhile and STILL am in love with the idea. So beautiful and poetic and aghhh! Lol, when that cup broke girl tears were forming. The story line gets you really into the vid.
i randomly thought about this video again today. this video inspired the way i tell stories and express myself in my journalling. this is probably my favourite wong fu vid to date and i will always come back to it
I get it now! Glasses = sight Phone = hearing Umbrella = touch Scarf = smell Coffee Mug = taste That's so wonderfully clever to use five objects to associate with the five senses! =D Wong Fu never ceases to amaze me. I love your stories so much! You guys are so great! :D
"She tells me she wanted to be a raindrop, she doesn't mind falling, as long as she's not alone. And raindrops are never alone." - and my heart melted. Oh wes.
Only true geniuses can make a short film about talking objects and make it so emotional. I loved everything, the story, the music, the aesthetic. As an aspiring film maker, this inspires me a lot ! Good job Wong Fu, you guys never disappoint
Two years ago I watched this short and fell in love with Wong fu. Yesterday I finally got the chance to meet phil and wes, got their autographs and took picture with them. Till now I still feel unreal..
You just know it is Wesleys work when the atmosphere gives a quiet and peaceful feeling, there are blury things on screen, he never shows the full body of people only if needed and he concentrates at the legs and face. He makes little things seem so important and he loves playing with colours and the light. Also he is the only one that has managed to make me cry with a cup that broke. Wesley you are amazing :D
This video could touch the soul of the viewer. Every five things in this video have its representation and it talks about every moment she spent to the love of her life.
It also reminds me of the poem The Household Gods by Philip Hobsbaum. The personification of household objects talking about the people who once lived there.
This is beyond perfect. How you beautifully awaken any kind of emotions throuhg only viewing ordinary objects with the right sound is amazing. Thanks Wes for sharing your mind with us. aWESome!
When she knocked the cup down, I jumped in fear, and in my head I was yelling, "Don't hurt him! He loves you!" Then I realized I was screaming to myself about a cup. Sigh, Wong Fu, what have you done to my soul?
Until I read the director's commentary I had completely misconstrued the short. After reading it I watched the short again and it made so much more sense. I'm amazed this is one of the most beautiful things I have seen!
Brilliant concept. Excellent execution. Almost perfect. I think the raindrop metaphor didn't work as well as it could have. But everything else was great
Cried at the end, which brings me through my past relationships. When either one of the five of them fall, a relationship is bound to fail. Great portrayal of the many problems in failed relationships. But hope is at the end, when you find that perfect someone for you,
Wesley Chan visited my university today and before he arrived, we watched this video. I hadn't seen it before but I instantly fell in love with the cinematography and story ^_^ Thank you to Wes and all of Wong Fu for being so inspirational!
This is one of the best pieces of work I have come across on the net. It speaks about so much more than just what is heard. It's what is felt and what affects your soul, how so much of what we do are bounded within the things we have and around us.
This has always been one of my favorite videos on the internet. I found you guys when I was a dumb teenager who was way too into K-pop and I fell in love with your storytelling and the way that you create images. You guys have a true gift and I hope you always keep the same respect for art and stories for years to come.
3 years ago was the first time I watched this from my old youtube account. At that time, I couldn't really grasp this video, but it lured me in so much that I never forgot about it. I don't know any cinematography jargons, but it;s just how this video was made, made it feel so.. nostalgic. Now fast forward to now, aside from the cinematography I also understood the message as well. The only thing I can say is, your way of storytelling, your vision is just amazing. I have so much respect to give to you guys, please keep on making more. Wong Fu for life!
I like how each of these were the 5 senses. Glasses for seeing, phone for hearing, umbrella for touch, scarf for smell, and mug for taste. Sometimes, you don't need 200 minute films to express something like that. I am so glad that TH-cam is free, because this is definitely worth paying for.
It is just me or does this actually represents 5 stages/type of love/boyfriend? The first is the innocent bf. When both lovers are young and innocent The second type of bf. As you get older you often get wiser and deeper, exploring different perspectives and showing people your perspectives. The third is comfort the lover whom you're too comfortable with and it gets boring. After the honeymood stage is over. raindrops symbolized you're all right as long as there is someone there to share your pain? The forth the passionate, yet caring lover. The fifth bf is the innocent bf being with an experience person. Lastly the rain drop symbolizes defaulting with the crowed and following the heard because it's easier or going with the flow.
my absolute fav wongfu video! sometimes when i can't sleep and worry about different things, i listen to this and it makes me feel at ease and warms my heart.. Thanks Wesley You are brilliant
Hi this is Wesley. I made this short 10 years ago. I'm still proud of it. Thanks for watching, friend.
It’s pretty insane how I related to this at 16 and still do today. So many feels. I love watching this short. Thank you for creating this masterpiece.
In a world of objectification, personifying notions and materials around us just makes us better people, to say the least. It’s a wonderful short. It's one of my favorites 'til today
This is still my absolute favorite video on the internet. It’s important you know that
"If you hold my hand, I'll be yours forever" I lied. I lost my umbrella today. It made me think of this short again. Hello from 2019. Sad.
Man,u shd do more collab with jesse chui.he is the unsung hero of ur short films man
R.I.P.
hi friend. i come back to this every year, if not more. your videos have really changed my life. i wish i could dive into your thoughts bc they honestly resonate so much with me. i messaged david choi on fb bc somehow we’re friends on it 🥲but meeting you and understanding your thoughts behind your shorts & how they relate to your experiences would be such a gift

i miss your shorts :( it’s 5:30 am and ugh my heart resonates with them w every bit
I finally figured it out... the 5 senses of the relationship:

Yeah
And when you think about it. This is kinda of a prequel to Musing's End. Meaning she's in the process of finding a boyfriend and when he became all those senses, five objects fell.
U r adorable
Yup.
you can so tell when a wongfu short is written by Wes
WaitingToFade because Wes uses symbolism. Phil's shorts are kinda easy to understand because he writes straight about emotions. I was halfway through the video before I understood what was happening here.
Who else immediately looked around suspiciously at all their belongings?
I JUST BECAME EMOTIONALLY INVESTED IN A CUP.
I feel like really bad for cheating on my mugs without knowing.

essennagerry at least the telephone doesn't end up in the garbage :D
That last one tho 😭
I always thought it would be scarf because of that line he said about knowing her scent
This has to be one of the most beautiful and powerful short I have ever seen so far hands down!

Am I the only one who likes to listen to wongfu shorts at work? This is such a work of art from visuals to writing to the score 😍
The scores are just as big an element as the story itself, it's very moving music, and conveys a lot of emotion not spoken in the script.
Hard to pic a fave....

After 11 years, this is still my favorite short film by WongFu. 7:40 gets me every time.
I remember showing very close friends this and at the end they were like "okay?" I stopped sharing things i absolutely cherished to people. They're not gonna ruin this video.

Thanks for this classic wong fu and especially thanks to Wesley Chan.
I just ran downstairs and kissed my favourite mug like I LOVE U OKAY MUG? Yea......
Haha
Mitchikki #mugged
I love Chris Dinh's voice! *swoon*
I looked crazy in front of my family while crying and yelling out "THE CUP FELL!!!"
I re-visit this video every once in awhile and STILL am in love with the idea. So beautiful and poetic and aghhh! Lol, when that cup broke girl tears were forming. The story line gets you really into the vid.
Novaa N. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who comes back to this video.
I always love watching Wes' films that he writes, it always makes you think about life differently
This will always be my favorite video by wongfu. I play this every night before I go to bed. It's very soothing and relaxing.
i randomly thought about this video again today. this video inspired the way i tell stories and express myself in my journalling. this is probably my favourite wong fu vid to date and i will always come back to it
My heart leaped off the table with the mug when it fell.
wow, after years I rewatch this short and I finally know/ understand where this is all about.. lol
Me too!! I watched it before and i couldnt understand. Now, everything is clear :)
I'm still confused..
+Nathania Saputra read the description box and it explains that this video is about 5 different household object
Watching this 8 years later.... still beautiful
I get it now!
Glasses = sight
Phone = hearing
Umbrella = touch
Scarf = smell
Coffee Mug = taste
That's so wonderfully clever to use five objects to associate with the five senses! =D Wong Fu never ceases to amaze me. I love your stories so much! You guys are so great! :D
Such beautiful cinematography! I gasped audibly when she knocked off the mug. ㅠㅠ
"She tells me she wanted to be a raindrop, she doesn't mind falling, as long as she's not alone. And raindrops are never alone." - and my heart melted. Oh wes.
I shared this on my fb page 12 years ago !! I didn’t remember it so I watched it again.. it is still so beautiful. Thanks again ❤
Only true geniuses can make a short film about talking objects and make it so emotional.
I loved everything, the story, the music, the aesthetic. As an aspiring film maker, this inspires me a lot ! Good job Wong Fu, you guys never disappoint
Been 3 years and this video still gives me the feels
Who else is re-watching it after listening to Wes and Janet's podcast?!
Watching this two years later...I wonder why it touched me more than before. I finally understood it. I'm so glad I came back to watch it.
This is the short that made me fall in love with Wong Fu.
And that cup gives me feels all the time.
I have those EXACT same mugs, so when I saw it fall it hurt a bit more!!! I was like NOOO!!! HOW DARE YOU MURDER ONE OF MY FAVORITE MUGS!!!
Two years ago I watched this short and fell in love with Wong fu. Yesterday I finally got the chance to meet phil and wes, got their autographs and took picture with them. Till now I still feel unreal..

i cried during this. i cry during a lot of the videos. they are so beautiful.
4 years later.. and i still go back to this ~
forever my fave ~
I first saw this video back in 2012 and still replay this video over and over again
Omg this reminds of 5 Centimeters Per Second, and this one animation of a cat that waited for his owner.
I love 5 Centimeters Per Second! So freakin sad though! :(( This definitely carries the same feels.
OSeanSanO Wes has said Makoto Shinkai is an inspiration... so yea they did copy from 5cps
zoicno He did a great job at capturing the same feelings.
It also reminds me of the poem The Household Gods by Philip Hobsbaum. The personification of household objects talking about the people who once lived there.
This is beyond perfect. How you beautifully awaken any kind of emotions throuhg only viewing ordinary objects with the right sound is amazing. Thanks Wes for sharing your mind with us.
aWESome!
Uha
When she knocked the cup down, I jumped in fear, and in my head I was yelling, "Don't hurt him! He loves you!" Then I realized I was screaming to myself about a cup. Sigh, Wong Fu, what have you done to my soul?
Aw man, this always gets me. The music, the script, voices, acting, shooting, angles, lighting, everything is so beautiful together.
My favorite line remains, “she tells me she wants to be a raindrop. She doesn’t mind falling, as long as she’s not alone.” *tears*😭😭😭😭😭
7:21 "I'm afraid the truth will break me"
Woah
Wes is so poetic, very impressed, what a guy :)
Until I read the director's commentary I had completely misconstrued the short. After reading it I watched the short again and it made so much more sense. I'm amazed this is one of the most beautiful things I have seen!
I literally Gasped when the cup fell, I love the story!
It's like few seconds into the video, you immediately know Wes wrote and directed this. LOL. Only he can think of inanimate things like this. ;D
But hope is at the end, when you find that perfect someone for you,
Wesley is so deep
I can't believe they actually changed the name xD But I still love this video! Definitley one of my favorites
When five fell was the original title :D
lol I know xD And I love your username xD
Omg the music at 7:44 has got me feeling so many tingles and emotions
Wesley Chan visited my university today and before he arrived, we watched this video. I hadn't seen it before but I instantly fell in love with the cinematography and story ^_^ Thank you to Wes and all of Wong Fu for being so inspirational!
It's scary how much I relate to the cup.
When wongfuproductions is so talented that they can make people cry over a cup.
Am I the only one who only began to fully understand the video while the umbrella's thoughts were being voiced?
This is my favourite Wongfu short!!!! I love everything about it! Thank you Wesley for writing this! It is amazing!
Wait did I just cry for a cup... an inanimate object ? WTF
I don't quite know how I feel after this, but i know it's beautiful
Um... why are inanimate objects giving me the feels right now??? *sobs*
This is one of the best pieces of work I have come across on the net. It speaks about so much more than just what is heard. It's what is felt and what affects your soul, how so much of what we do are bounded within the things we have and around us.
Amazing.
Another reason I love this channel
Sanya where r u!!??
I gasped when the cup dropped..
This has always been one of my favorite videos on the internet. I found you guys when I was a dumb teenager who was way too into K-pop and I fell in love with your storytelling and the way that you create images. You guys have a true gift and I hope you always keep the same respect for art and stories for years to come.
They actually changed the title....oh my god. Hahahaha
what was it before? and why'd they change it?
It was their April Fools joke, The title should be When Five Fell. And the joke is just the 24 reasons thing
This is so much reminds me Makoto Shinkai
wes' videos are so poignant and nostalgic in a way I can't explain
3 years ago was the first time I watched this from my old youtube account. At that time, I couldn't really grasp this video, but it lured me in so much that I never forgot about it. I don't know any cinematography jargons, but it;s just how this video was made, made it feel so.. nostalgic. Now fast forward to now, aside from the cinematography I also understood the message as well. The only thing I can say is, your way of storytelling, your vision is just amazing. I have so much respect to give to you guys, please keep on making more. Wong Fu for life!
wtf wesley this is amazing holy shit
I got into WF around 2011 so can someone clarify for me why the trailer for When Five Fell came out a full year before the short?
I come back here every once in a while. Still get emotional watching it🥹😭
When the cup broke I was like dont cry dont cry....dont ......cry
I like how each of these were the 5 senses. Glasses for seeing, phone for hearing, umbrella for touch, scarf for smell, and mug for taste. Sometimes, you don't need 200 minute films to express something like that. I am so glad that TH-cam is free, because this is definitely worth paying for.
It is just me or does this actually represents 5 stages/type of love/boyfriend?
The first is the innocent bf. When both lovers are young and innocent
The second type of bf.
Lastly the rain drop symbolizes defaulting with the crowed and following the heard because it's easier or going with the flow.
actually your kinda right if you read about the directors note wes explained it all there :) beautiful story indeed
I need to hug my cup!
Did you really just make me feel sorry for a cup? I can't even. just How!
old wong fu videos are just...amazing
Goddamnit why did the cup have to suffer q-q
Okay, Wes is legit the perfect man
my glasses, come to me my baby :c
Why am I crying? I'm shedding tears. Wongfu why do you do this?
I got sad when the cup broke.
I feel like a cup sometimes.
....the cup.
my absolute fav wongfu video! sometimes when i can't sleep and worry about different things, i listen to this and it makes me feel at ease and warms my heart.. Thanks Wesley You are brilliant
this is really nice but it's boring the crap outta me hahaha
i feel slightly autistic now
Rewatching it now in 2021 after their podcast episode
