  • Are you looking to take your Creality CR-6 SE (or CR-10 Smart) to the next level? Did your 3D printer become a giant paper weight when your strain gauge sensor failed you? Then this video is for you! In this comprehensive guide, I will show you step-by-step how to modify your CR-6 SE to enhance its performance with the addition of a CR Touch or BL Touch module!
    Firstly, I will walk you through upgrading the hotend and extruder. I have designed a Bondetch LGX Lite direct drive extruder setup to now include a 5015 part cooling fan with dual fan ducts, plus a hot end mount that eliminates the strain gauge sensor, and a new mount for the CR Touch. By installing a direct drive extruder, you can achieve greater accuracy and reduce filament jams. I have all of the wiring diagrams, firmware settings, and slicer settings taken care of for you.
    The CR Touch bed leveling sensor will be much more reliable than the previous strain gauge sensor. It was the root cause of my first layer adhesion problems when I was previously getting very erratic results. I will show you how to setup the new sensor with the new firmware and touch screen. The result will be the smoothest first layers you've ever experienced.
    I will also walk you through the mainboard upgrade to the Big Tree Tech SKR Mini E3 V3 which will allow us to use the CR Touch probe. I have developed a set of "Easy Swap" PCBs that will make the wiring job a breeze. Much of the original wiring harness is retained and you won't have to spend hours making custom wiring harnesses for the whole printer. With the new mainboard I have compiled a custom Marlin configuration and I will provide a detailed guide on how to download and install the latest firmware, as well as demonstrate how to adjust the settings to quickly get started printing again!
    As a bonus, I've also installed a Big Tree Tech TFT35 V3.0.1 dual mode touchscreen and some NeoPixel RGBW LEDs that respond to printer events. Like everything else, I have the firmware taken care of to make use of all of these modifications.

    I can appreciate the work you put into this procedure. After watching your video multiple times, I think I want to do this!
    I have purchased a Creality Sonic pad as well as a Creality Nebula camera.
    The Sonic Pad has taken over the CR-6 SE touchpad.
    I want to install a direct drive, with CR-Touch. The new motherboard and the correct flash.
    Obviously I don’t want to purchase something I don’t need.

    After going through 2 strain gauges, a full direct drive conversion and having now the issue where there was enough movement in the print head from being supported by the strain gauge that my CR6-Max kept digging into the PEI sheet, I was ready to throw my printer in the bin, and accept the loss of a lot of investment in my printer. Saw the kit that Embrace does, figured I would only have to hand make the longer leads between the print head and the top breakout board, and thought "yep, I'll give it a go".
    Now have a rock solid print head that doesnt move, a super accurate CR-Touch probe, using klipper so I can take advantage of a 12x12 matrix bed mesh, and my 400x400 printer performs like it never did before. This kit is PERFECT to really make the most of a poor Creality design "feature". I'm so over the moon, thanks!!!!!

      @@daylen577 for my 6Max yes, it was worth doing, as I was already at the stage where it needed replacement parts and fundamental changes, and given it has the larger bed than most other printers it was worth the larger investment.

    Perfect project man! Even the video's flow and editing...
    I am RIGHT NOW on the edge of either destroying or changing everything on my CR6SE, Currently fully dismantled lying on my bed. Even though I generally had minor problems but at unreasonable timings still i am fed up. How is the maintainability of your system over time. And how much time did this project took you, i mean the planning etc. I really liked your work! I am still thinking of doing custom changes that i am going to design, just for the fun (there is no such thing) of it. What would you recommend to your lil bro here, beforehand starting a project like this.

    Fantastic! My CR6 SE went up in fumes last night. I figured the motherboard fried (obviously, although the smoke seems to be coming from the touch screen side)
    I was thinking of replacing the motherboard with SKR MINI E3 V3. Will I be able to do that using your SE Mainboard Easy Swap PCB Kit while keeping the original carriage with strain gauge? (I might change to CR touch in future but strain gauge worked till now and I'm tight on the budget)

    great work, man! I see the USB port slot on the machine is blocked by the new display, is the usb port on the new display used for host/octoprint connections? Also did you have to adjust the vref on the mainboard to accomodate lower amp requirements of the bondtech extruder? I am scared to start this mainly because of the firmware changes I have to do since I don't want to do all the mods in this video. @@EmbraceMaking You should have added the Cr Touch plug-in to your own motherboard, so it costs a lot. Screen, motherboard, PCB Swap all almost a machine coin. Now I'm converting CR10S to CR6SE and I'm going to create a hybrid machine. Weight meter is working properly, the problem is the bearing screws.

    Awesome video! I was losing hope that anyone was still doing anything with the CR-6 SE. The fellow that made the community firmware gave up on it a long time ago. I am curious if you have to print slower now having a direct drive setup, or does it even make a difference over stock? With the upgraded thermistor, are you able to get higher temps or is the stock hot end setup still not good enough for higher temp filaments? And lastly, what part of Canada are YOU from? I'm from BC.

    • @EmbraceMaking
      @EmbraceMaking  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm able to print faster with the direct drive. I know the print head will weigh more but it hasn't been an issue and the extrusion is more precise. I'm currently in the process of converting over to Klipper as well so I will be able to perform the input shaping tuning and will have even higher speed and higher quality prints shortly :) (video on that on the way)

      @@EmbraceMaking I've heard our touch screen won't work with klipper, is that correct? I really want to take advantage of the input shaping as well.

    • @EmbraceMaking
      @EmbraceMaking  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! I don't see it why it wouldn't work on the CR6 max... everything about the max and SE look the same with the exception of the larger build volume. I haven't personally setup the sonic pad with the SKR mini yet but it's on my To Do list. I know of some people out there on the interwebs that have used the Sonic Pad with the SKR mini so it is entirely possible and has been documented. You would just have to set up your config file for your printer dimensions, offsets, etc.

    • @dragularum
      @dragularum 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Get it, the only thing you have to do is handmake the longer leads out to the print head from the top breakout board if you cant find premade in that length. I've just finished mine and it took 2 evenings to do start to finish, including handmaking the longer cables with fingers the size of hot dogs :P My Max is so good now. I'm using full Klipper with a Pi4 rather than the sonic pad, but as long as you can do a profile for it, there is no reason it shouldnt work, its identical to the 6SE, just bigger bed dimensions.

    Thank you for your answer

    • @EmbraceMaking
      @EmbraceMaking  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey thanks for the question. Just so it's clear this isn't a stealthburner kit - the aesthetic design took inspiration but I just want to make sure if you order you don't feel as though it is misrepresented. Anyways, unfortunately the answer is no to both of your questions. The 5015 blower was quite a bit larger and started to make the print head huge - same with the 4010 hotend fan. Everything was pretty compact in this design

    • @BEACHTECH3D
      @BEACHTECH3D 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@EmbraceMaking thanks for the quick reply. Yes I’m aware it’s not an actual stealth burner. I just call it that way because of the design 🤓. I understand, I think the 4020 and the 3010 should give a decent cooling. Like the design, pretty simple, like the way the shroud is completely aligned with the nozzle, that was my main concern with my SB setup, it’s not completely centered.
      Excited to install it and completely redo my CR6max. Although it work’s pretty much fine, even the level gauge, but for some reason I hate the fact that the can “move” a little. I did install a washer on the left side of the gauge which was a huge game changer, but I kinda wanna get rid of it. Only difference is, I’ll strip the machine completely, rewire everything, so I won’t need the extra control and split boards anymore, just straight to the mcu. Plus linear rail for the x y axis. My z rods are pretty much fine, so I left that out, I have more issue with the bed noise and layer shift above 500mm/s travel acceleration. So hopefully this rebuild will fix my problems.

      With the PCB kit you can swap the mainboard and re-use the strain gauge sensor if you want - however I have yet to have someone do this. In terms of the print head kit, you cannot use the strain gauge sensor with the printhead kit since the mounting bracket that holds the hotend + cr touch also holds the fan shroud.

      Ultimately that is for you to decide. I understand what you're saying but I liken 3D printer modifying to car modifying (which I used to be heavily into). In the car world there are people out there who just want to buy the Corvette and drive it off the lot and that is where their interest ends. Then there are others who enjoy the journey of building their own car. They start with something less expensive (or even broken) and over time spend enough money that they could have bought the Corvette. However, they end up building something unique and personal and they get their enjoyment from this process and learn so much along the way. The same can be said for 3D printers, you just have to decide what route you want to take :)
