Had the 21 crosstrek sport and traded it for the 23 forester wilderness 2 weeks ago and pretty impressed so far. Not something you see everyday in Houston but get some looks and smack talk from the jeep guys.

Both are very nice vehicles but the outback definitely drives nicer overall. I will say it would be a tougher choice if the Forrester had a turbo. Outback also looks better IMO.

I own the 22’ Forester Wilderness. Previously owed a 06’ and 11’ Forester. I’m partial to the Forester but wish they would have offered the turbo engine as an option on the Forester Wilderness. . Overall, the Wilderness is the best trim they have offered to date.

OBW wins hands down on every aspect. I come from a Forester and it was night and day going to the OBW. More power which translate in easier off-roading, carrying more stuff with ease, driving confort is much better and more practical cargo space even if they are almost the same.

I picked up that exactly Forester today and omg the moonroof and huge windows the visibility is amazing. The ride quality is comparable to my 70k BMW X3 M40i. The power was fine on an hour drive on the highway here in jersey between some traffic and passing people no problem at all. The lane centering with cruise control was terrific. Definitely glad I went with the Forester…… I’m 48 so time to break out the power ballad CD’s !!!!

I've been driving a Forester since 2019. I'm changing vehicles in the coming months and I think this time I'll opt for the Outback. Changing to a 2023 model brings nothing significantly new aesthetically and I would feel like I was driving my old car. The Outback model is different both externally and internally. The space available when the seats are lowered is also a little larger than in the Forester. I considered the turbo engine option but quickly changed my mind when I saw the noticeable difference in price here in Canada. What's more, you have to add 15% more taxes to the price... so I will continue to settle for the regular engine which, by the way, does the job very well. Thanks for your work.

I have had both the 2022 Outback Wilderness and the 2023 Outback Wilderness. It is hands down my favorite vehicle that I have owned. I managed a road trip from Dallas to Memphis and was able to get 32 MPG. Good fuel mileage is possible, one just has to watch the RPMs and try not to drive it like you stole it. In hills as well as stop and go traffic is where it will start drinking fuel.
All in all, it is one of the most over all capable vehicles that I have owned. It will allow me to go on forest trails as well as pick up groceries and not need to sell a kidney to purchase tires.

I own both the 2022 Outback Wilderness, and a 2024 Forester Wilderness. Power....ya can't beat the Outback, but ya gotta really put your foot into it before the turbo kicks in and then it really goes. I can't stand the large touch screen functions. You have to take your eyes off the road every time you want to do anything, I can't stand it, easy to hit the wrong function, I give it a poor rating for user friendly, easy to use, safe driving controls. On the other hand, the Forester has more traditional controls, easy to use while still keeping your eyes on the road, heated seat controls down where they're supposed to be, I like it so much better. Fuel economy, I'm a conservative driver and best I can get on the hwy is 23 mpg on a flat hwy with no head wind. Forester, I haven't had it long at all and I've already seen 27 plus on the hwy. Headlights on both are extremely bright, all traffic coming towards you flash their headlights because they think your high beams are on......really annoying, wish the headlights weren't so bright. Long story short, overall I like the Forester better.

I went from the 19 forester sport to the forester wilderness to a 23 outback wilderness. The outback is by far better. If you need to tow and or want a more exciting ride go with the outback. You won’t have any regrets. The touch screen isn’t terrible. Slight lags are frustrating at times . Surprisingly I’m getting a little better average mpg with the obw than the fw. 23.5 mpg over 5k miles in obw. 22.3 over 8k in FW. Overall it’s pretty crappy but it by far surpasses a rav4 or Honda in capabilities.

I just got rid of my POS '21 Outback - it was loaded to the gills but after multiple electrical issues (fried FIVE circuits), spent THREE WEEKS at the dealer because the sound system blew - the 16 speaker Harman Kardon and less than two weeks later, it stranded me 615 miles from home because yet another circuit blew draining the battery - twice! ALL of this at less than 12k miles on the car!! I finally threw in the towel once I made it back home - traded it for a '23 Forester Wilderness. So much better than the Outback - hardly any electronics - handles much better - no turbo but it has better pickup than my turbo had in the outback. Can't wait to take it on a trip.

Just bought the (2024) forester wilderness. Test drove both and the difference in the turbo didn’t justify the price and reliability over the naturally aspirated engine. The forester has plenty of gumption. Sport sharp makes it even more snappy. The overall aesthetic of the forester is more appealing to me as well. I like them boxy. Also the new infotainment center in the 2024 forester is awesome. 10/10 would buy again. I was also able to get a large discount on the forester. Not so much on the Outback which was strange because they had more of them in stock. Also if you’re tall, there’s plenty of room in the forester. I’m all torso and still had plenty of head room.

Thanks for the great review! I'm going to go the opposite direction...We currently have an Outback but are going to opt for the Forester Wilderness. A little bit shorter and taller and don't need the extra power of the Turbo Outback as we have a pick up truck for that. This is my 7th Subaru (4th Outback wagon, Brat 1st, Justy, Impreza wagon and RARE 2007 Outback Sedan!) and to be honest, I'm getting a little tired of the same car. I have essentially FLOGGED all my Subaru's with Western NY winters, U.P Michigan trails and winters and countless cross country trips. I went with the forester wilderness because of the touch screen and physical dial controls for the climate control. I'm not a fan of everything going touch screen only, I think it takes focus away from the road and what you're supposed to do when you're driving, which is pay attention to driving and everything around you. The "lack" of power isn't an issue for me, i'm not racing anyone on the road and I've never had an issue reaching highway speeds when merging or climbing a hill. I also prefer the more headroom on the inside (cousin has a 24 outback touring) as i'm 6'4". Moonroof is what it is, would have preferred to get it without one if I could but tis what tis... All said, so far i've put the Malone Aero crossbars on it, and rokblokz mudflaps and I'll probably bump up the tire size on them when the stock tires wear out.

That’s awesome man, thanks for sharing that. I sure hope you’re right about the new Forester, sales actually dropped a lot for that model in 2022 over previous years. I think it was 114k units vs. 155k the year before. A refresh is likely needed to spark interest, and I hope Subaru is listening to us about the turbo and buttons! 🙂

I am using my Subaru for a Overlander. The Forester payload capacity is 147lbs more than the Outback, so Outback is out of the question. When I start adding the weight for everything I want to carry….passengers, roof rack, equipment, etc. definitely going to need that extra 147 pounds. So in that area the Forester performs better. Also with the payload I am carrying concerned that Turbo which runs the engine and oil much hotter anyway is a big concern over time.

I have a Tacoma and I test driven the Forrester in the outback and I really like them But I’m considering giving up my Tacoma for a Forrester wilderness I’m really impressed with the vehicle from the way I drive handles house. Good ground clearance.

I definitely miss both my Tacomas. A 2013 regular cab 5 speed and a 2017 access cab 5 speed. But no, I don’t regret it! Subaru offers more for the value and I didn’t actually use the truck’s capacity more than a couple times a year. If you’re going from a Tacoma I would recommend a Wilderness trim level, just to give you that extra offroadiness that might make the transition easier! 😉

It replaced our 11 year old outback that we put 255,000km on. We didn’t need the bigger Outback any more. Plus, that big screen in the OB just too busy.

They’re both great! But the Outback has 3” longer wheelbase, probably slightly less coefficient of drag, and the turbo engine makes it a great road trip car. But I’m sure the FW is nearly just as good. I recently shared two road trip videos in my own OBW. 🙂

I'm going to go with the Forester Wilderness. I know some dis the non-turbo but this one of the reason I went with it. I've had quite a few turbo cars in the past and I had to replace them once the warranty ran out. (My wife drives a twin turbo F-150 EcoBoost, so far so good) another reason is it doesn't look like a station wagon, sits up a bit more and of course less expensive and even insurance is less. Sooooo, do I go for the 2023 or hold off a bit to see what the 2024 brings? 🤔

    • @AutomotiveAnonymous208

That’s a good question!? I haven’t heard when the new generation will come out. But getting a later/refreshed version of a long standing generation means reliability of the platform should be good as little kinks have been worked out! But also, being a new generation owner is also fun. 🤔🤷‍♂️

    • @huntstyle
      @huntstyle ปีที่แล้ว

I'm at least waiting to see what changes are made to the 24. The expectation from what I've read is a new generation, given that Subaru typically goes 5 years between generations, and 19 was the last change for the Forester. If I don't care for the changes, or if it's not enough to make a difference, I'll try to get a 23 for a discount! (I know, good luck with that, lol)

I’ve driven more than a dozen outback’s with this screen (and still own my OBW) and driven quite a few Foresters, but have never lived with one. What I know is that I strongly prefer the Foresters 8” screen and layout compared to the 11.6” in basically every other Subaru. It’s back up camera clarity and size is better and it just seems to work better.
