The Bayliner seemed mighty small compared to that beast of a yacht and the waves at haulover. Truly a close pass and should have been avoided by that yachtster. My 21' occasionally gets the big plowing wake from a big cruiser on our inland lakes. That was definitely too close for my comfort.

Reminds me of the Prowler in San Diego. Dumbass captain on a yacht pulls out of San Diego Harbor at like 28 knots and puts it on auto pilot. Ends up running over a sportfishing boat killing several people and destroying one of the most storied boats in the San Diego Sportfishing Fleet. Looking at the GPS data you can clearly see when the collision occurred. The yacht deflected its course a little bit... bot no changes in heading or speed occurred until several minutes after the crash. Nobody was at the helm.

Then the Bayliner slowed to a crawl, still in the lane, and decided to turn around...in the lane. Then he made a turn without making sure he was clear of traffic and proceeded back into the inlet IN THE OUTGOING LANE! Idiot captain.

The big boat was in no trouble and didn't have to go right then. That bayliner captain could have made another mistake (besides being on a boat to begin with) and there could have been a collision ruining everyones day over a few minutes.

They were traveling too fast and you close for safe margins. Ideally, the Bayliner would have maintained a straight heading, but they didn't do anything outrageous, leading up the the near catastrophy. Anyone who says the overtaking boat wasn't seriously at fault, and operating dangerously, doesn't know the rules of the road (sea).

Personally I feel like the smaller craft would be in the wrong if anything, watch closer, the guy at the helm walked away to close the walkthrough and the guy that was behind him had to grab the wheel watching a bunch of these videos, that inlet didn’t look like a good place to not focus on the task at hand. Overtaking starboard to the smaller is acceptable as long as it is done safely in regards to conditions and proximity, which in this case it clearly was not. Is there not a process for charging/fining captains for unsafe operation of a watercraft in Florida?
Actually, according to Colregs Rule #13, the overtaking boat ALWAYS must give way to the overtaken boat....EVEN if the overtaken boat has acknowledged and given the OK for the overtaking.
That captain should lose his license. You can't hit or swamp a boat just because you want to go faster. Your job is to look at the other boats and see their speed and adjust your course accordingly not swamp them because you are to important to wait for them to clear or just match their speed which would have been no problem for a boat that size to handle. That was reckless and possibly life threatening.

Looks like the 'real' captain handed over to one of the passengers for a few seconds, (0:16 - 0:36), just prior to the yacht passing them so that he could attend to the windshield. The Bayliner also slows as can be seen from the reduced wake. When the deputy skipper sees the yacht, he seems to initially turn towards it then tries to correct but doesn't do a good job of it, probably due to reduced speed. The yacht captain definitely should have given the Bayliner a wider berth when passing.
Smaller boat needs to understand where he’s at. He’s in a turbulent inlet with all kinds of different boats coming in and out. If you can’t hold it straight and get through it, you should not be in it. The bigger boat needs to have substantial forward movement For good course direction through turbulent water. This problem could’ve been avoided if the captain was able to read tides. Smaller boats should go in and out on neutral tide.
You can take it to the bank that given the skippers activity moving around inside the boat that one of his passengers was raising holy hell about being too sick to put up with going out any further so he got caught between the proverbial rock and hard place of keeping the peace in his family. A vessel shall be deemed to be overtaking when coming up with another vessel from a direction more than 22.5° abaft the beam, that is, in such a position with reference to the vessel she is overtaking, that at night she would be able to see only the stern light of that vessel but neither of her sidelights. Instead, this is a cross situation: Rule 15: Crossing situation When two power-driven vessels are crossing so as to involve risk of collision, the vessel which has the other on her own starboard side shall keep out of the way and shall, if the circumstances of the case admit avoid, crossing ahead of the other vessel. So, the Bayliner was the "give-way vessel" and should have not attempted to pass in front of the larger vessel which was the 'stand on vessel' in this crossing situation, however... The larger vessel was crossing a known outlet from which other vessels should be known to emerge. Therefore, sailing so close and at such speed is (very) poor seamanship. It's interesting there is no sign of the large vessel in the earlier shots of the Bayliner leaving the inlet and indeed even the photographer wasn't aware of it until its bow filled the frame. I presume this 'fly-by' was done for nothing better that vanity to show-off the vessel to photographers at the outlet. However... Rule 34 states: a vessel nearing a bend or an area of the channel of fairway where other vessels may be obscured by an intervening obstruction shall sound one prolonged blast. There was no warning. Basically, the Bayliner skippers wasn't keeping a good lookout and aware of his situation, however, the large vessel was reckless in passing the mouth of the outlet so close and at such speed, failed to signal its approach and should, given the obstructed vision caused by the seawall, have passed with full knowledge a small boat could emerge unseen, i.e. not at full speed as done. Terrible seamanship

They were playing by running up the middle. Lots of boats do it. There’s normally lots of room to pass to the port or starboard. In this case the captain of the larger yacht chose to thread the needle on the starboard instead of overtaking on the port where there’s loads of room based on the boat being overtaken. It’s ok to play on the water. It’s not ok to power your yacht like a bully. Yes the guy should have been paying more attention in the Bayliner, but he was intent on the waves ahead of him, his primary task at the moment. If I wasn’t retired and had to write a citation,,, it would all be the larger yachts fault.

So, the Bayliner was the "give-way vessel" and should have not attempted to pass in front of the larger vessel which was the 'stand on vessel' in this crossing situation, however...
The larger vessel was crossing a known outlet from which other vessels should be known to emerge. Therefore, sailing so close and at such speed is (very) poor seamanship. It's interesting there is no sign of the large vessel in the earlier shots of the Bayliner leaving the inlet and indeed even the photographer wasn't aware of it until its bow filled the frame. I presume this 'fly-by' was done for nothing better that vanity to show-off the vessel to photographers at the outlet. However...
Rule 34 states: a vessel nearing a bend or an area of the channel of fairway where other vessels may be obscured by an intervening obstruction shall sound one prolonged blast. There was no warning.
Basically, the Bayliner skippers wasn't keeping a good lookout and aware of his situation, however, the large vessel was reckless in passing the mouth of the outlet so close and at such speed, failed to signal its approach and should, given the obstructed vision caused by the seawall, have passed with full knowledge a small boat could emerge unseen, i.e. not at full speed as done. Terrible seamanship

They were playing by running up the middle. Lots of boats do it. There’s normally lots of room to pass to the port or starboard. In this case the captain of the larger yacht chose to thread the needle on the starboard instead of overtaking on the port where there’s loads of room based on the boat being overtaken. It’s ok to play on the water. It’s not ok to power your yacht like a bully. Yes the guy should have been paying more attention in the Bayliner, but he was intent on the waves ahead of him, his primary task at the moment.
If I wasn’t retired and had to write a citation,,, it would all be the larger yachts fault.
