  • The rare Messerschmitt Bf (Me) 109 [Red 7] seen on the ground and in the air on saturday the 17th of August at Roskilde Airshow 2013 in Denmark. All though the pictures are far from perfect you can enjoy the fantastic sound from that machine in the air. App. 95% of the total flight is recorded in this video. In the show the next day it did make an emergency landing in a cornfield near the airport. Luckily with no harm to the skilled pilot Klaus Plasa, and only minor damage to the plane. The plane is own by EADS - a huge european aerospace organisation and has home at Flugmuseum Messerschmitt (Messerschmitt Stiftung) near München. There exist only very few Bf (Me) 109 mounted with the original Daimler-Benz DB-605 engine. The plane itself is not quite original as it is licence build in Spain in 1950. The plane have participated in the famous movie The Battle of Britain and has crashed several times during its long life.
    News May 2014:
    The accident report from the belly landing have been published in May 2014 and reveal why the engine did stop in the air on that Sunday. The reason was that this Me109 is not intended to do negative G flight, for example, level flight upside down which the airplane did immediately before the engine stopped. In the plane's Flight Manual, there was no restrictions about that, and therefore the pilot could not know about that limitation. Restriction markings regarding negative G fligh is now put into the Flight Manual.
    News May 2015:
    The plane has now been repaired and is flying again. In addition, it has now been published that the Red 7 once more will participate in the big national airshow in Roskilde Denmark in 2015. It is the same airshow where the plane unfortunately had to belly land in a cornfield in 2013.

    Nit-picking: The 109 has the designation "bf 109" with the abbreviation meaning Bayerishe Flugzugbau" .
    It was only from the twin-engined Me 210 onwards - the intended replacement for bf 110- that they started using the abbreviation "Me" .
    .
    Beautiful video of a fine piece of engineering.
    (The tricky handling characteristics of late-version 109s were caused by overloading a plane designed for a 700 hp engine carrying just 2 machine guns)
    (another issue with late-war aircraft is they were often built using slave labor from occupied Europe, a part of history we should never forget)

    In WW2 these planes flew with synthetic fuel. This fuel was made of coal as far as I know and was less potent than oil-based fuel, that the allies used.
    Now with good fuel we can see the real potential of these machines.
    I wish this fact would be recognized while comparing for example the Spitfire Supermarine with the later versions of the Bf-109 or the Fw-190.

    Because this plane is a 'marriage' between a Hispano HA-1112 and a DB-engine, it doesn't work exactly like a BF/Me 109. The fuel tanks, fuel line and suction points in the fuel tanks may differ from the original 109.
    The original BF/Me 109 had no problem with negative g-forces and inverted flight, because of the fuel injection system and because the whole fuel system was designed for negative g-forces and inverted flight. This plane may have those problems because the fuel lines can run dry because of suction points that are beyond the fuel level.

    Just missing the howling kompressor, think its turned down too much since the plane is lighter without armour and guns. But that sound oh yeah!

    Since this plane was built in Spain, is the engine the Daimler Benz DB-605, or is it a Hispano-Suiza V-12? And if it is the Hispano-Suiza, and is not fuel-injected such as the DB-605 V-12, that would explain, I would guess, why the pilot could not fly the plane inverted for more than 6-7 seconds before the carbs starved out. The BF-109 Emils during the Battle of Britain surprised many British pilots by flying inverted and employing great maneuverability to get out of some tough spots to avoid Spits and Hurries in a dogfight.

      The accident report is now in the Danish aviation accident archives. Conclusion was fuel starvation from several seconds of inverted flight, because the fuel system in this restored plane did not support inverted flight. Try this download link, if it works or search the Danish archives for 2014: www.havarikommissionen.dk/index.php?option=com_contentbuilder&controller=list&view=list&search_form_id=4&id=4&Itemid=225&lang=en&contentbuilder_download_file=98afe23c34a752b9fa0cf4f0bf114edc3b1cdaf5

    no way this has a daimler benz in it. The start up was so clean. then again its owned and operated in Europe so the maintenance and tuning is closer to that of WW2 German ground crews. All the US owned 109s never want to start and idle like crap.

      One of the top engine builders is in California, and he has restored both the DB engines and the only airworthy BMW 801. His work is flying on several Bf 109s, including in Germany where at least four Bf 109 restorations are in progress. There was one Bf 109 flying in the US and one in Canada (now sold to the UK.) A second Bf 109 had finished test flying in Germany and will soon be shipped to the US owner. All other flying Bf 109s will be in Germany or the UK. The Bf 109 is using a DB engine.

    You'd really need specialists to fly the 109 surely ie Klaus Plasa Mark Hanna ( deceased unfortunately) Keith Skilling maybe Paul Bohomme they're such a rare beautiful airplane would hate to see one damaged

    umm. with an original 109 you should be able to do inverted or negative g for maybe 20 seconds (due to oil scavenging), it should not have any problems with fuel pumping. First of all the fuel tank is a giant rubber bladder which is inside a plywood or aluminum box and it empties like an IV bag. So there should be no air in the tank itself. So i assume the fuel tank has been exchanged for a modern one , which is just an inflexible "bottle" , the idea with the rubber tank is that it is also mostly self-sealing. But I guess it will have aged in 70 years...

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fuel standpipes in the tank were not immersed in fuel during inverted flight according to the investigation report. The left and right fuel supply lines to the injection pump were examined after the accident and contained very little fuel.

    • @itmooh
      @itmooh 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, so the tank was probably not of the original type.
