Wiping my ball sets up my Pre Shot routine. My first thought would be, "no difference, just like practice" Thank you NIck for bringing me back to my earlier days back when.
I've been bowling "badly" since the 70's . Never wiped my ball until this year. Ball speed is so low that it struggles to carry. I have seen a noticeable difference wiping the ball. It gives it a little extra punch. Also I target beyond the arrows , not at the arrows. That keeps me behind the ball a little more, which also helps my carry.
Team No Wipe here. Hate having to sit there when I'm amped messing around with shammy and my ball. Also think it's less consistent when you wipe. Clean the resins regularly, leave the Purple dirty and never clean it. Just my personal opinion. Different strokes, different folks.
You’re welcome! For those that use urethane for spares, be sure to throw it in practice to get oil on it or else it’ll hook on you when shooting that corner pin!

BRUNSNICK! Question off topic, that's been plaguing me everytime I see your drill layout on your ball, and It's "crooked" or leaned away from the pin, not sure the term to use, but is that for your particular hand? or does that give you a built in cocked position to Rev the ball up? This Tweener is dying to understand, LOL!

When the lanes have a lot of oil, I clean the oil off my bowling balls. If I don't see enough skid, I leave the oil on my bowling balls. Most of the time I leave the oil of the balls because I don't throw a lot of revs or speed. I notice that the layout you use is a drop ring finger layout. Did you always go with that layout or did something different in your younger days? I like your videos, but I don't have the revs or speed to notice much different wiping or not wiping the ball unless there is a ton of oil on the lanes.
I am 50/50 when it comes to wiping. with urethane balls, 100% of the time I am wiping my balls. However, when it comes to reactive it varies. I am a no thumb one handed bowler, so I rely heavy on being able to properly grip the ball. I cannot have any oil between the ball and my hand, so I do wipe the ball (especially around my hand placement area). In my specific league, each team has four guys and we bowl four games. By the third to fourth game, the lanes are pretty much toasted. This is when I start to wipe my ball less and less. I still wipe around the part of my ball where my hand goes, however I may go two or three frames before wiping the rest of the ball off. I do this because I know that most of the oil on the lane is dam near gone, so I know that there’s at least oil on my ball (especially as a right hander). So game one and two I am wiping my ball almost every time, but game three and game four I’ll fully wipe my ball every two to three frames.
Nice one Nick-strodomus. I am a wiper. 👍 I try to keep things as consistent as possible. The only time I leave it is when it's a short pattern and I am trying to stretch it out front to back, I will throw a few shots with urethane, the go to reactive once I have gotten a little more hold downlane.
As a long time urethane user, I too have always used the trick of not wiping the ball when I shoot 10 pins or other spares on the right. I also sometimes will not wipe the ball at all if the lanes burn up bad and I need the extra slide, or to create some carrydown to keep my ball online in transition.
I WIPE FOR THE GUNK..............houses that don't or cant be bothered to "maintain" the pit area IMPREGNAYE the ball with crap you have to scrape off with you r finger nails - OR a smooth layer of dirt and gunk all around the ball and track................. Nick.. you overlooked something. If you wipe urethane every shot you will burn up the heads faster! And what happens when you move in off that spot with urethane? 10 pin.. 10 pin.. If you are moving every game, I can see it as an option. But if you are bowling multiple games on the same pair with urethane I would skip wiping all together..
Oh I want urethane to dig. That’s the only way it’ll strike is by setting up early. Rather than move in which is never really an option, I’ll switch to a lesser surfaced Purple or go to Black but I get what you’re saying.
Pretty much like you said towards the end. If there is a lot of oil and and the backends are slower, I wipe for sure. If the lanes are medium and the backends are fast, I do not wipe. Later in the tournament when the heads are getting dry, I do not wipe. Oh also if I'm bowling on a pair with someone throwing urathane I use a little surface and I wipe every shot. I'm also rev dominant.
I said the exact same thing in my own comment, how as a two finger no thumb bowler that I need grip. Grip is so important that if I get food or any drinks, I’ll eat or hold the cup in my opposite hand. I try my very best to keep my right hand dry as possible
I bowl 2 and 3 people teams in league and I have high speed and use alot of strong sould covers and by the time you get to bowl your ball dry anyways but do use with nu blue
Question on not wiping to promote skid for 10 pins... doesn't your release change and the flare would be different anyways? 🤔 I could be way wrong, just wondering.
@brunsnick got it thx! Trying to learn as much as possible about the balls and more technical data like specto gives. As I said b4, I'm a golf pro and trackman is my life (same as specto for bowling). I know how to throw a ball but don't really understand the ins and outs of drill patterns, differential, etc... yet. You have taught me a lot!
@brunsnick wow that's awesome. I got my PGM degree back in 06 and I've been at the PGA TOUR Superstore in Chandler AZ basically ever since. I'm in the STUDIO as the master fitting pro. If u get to az, come say hi 😊
@@brunsnickI could flatten out the ball for the 10 pin and it would go straight but my 3/4 track didn't change, never rolled over the holes like some pro's do hearing it thump down the lane. Not sure how the ball went straight when the track was the same as my strike release.
Pretty small sample size IMO. With that being said I never wipe because it changes ball motion more over the span of games. Wiping results in a ball that over-reacts more with time. Not wiping provides a more consistent read over that same time frame. This is with reactive, I don't throw urethane so I can't comment on that.
Makes no since not to wipe! For reactive balls, get the oil off before it gets absorbed in the cover and get any dirt off of it. For Urethane, impossible to get a consistent reaction without wiping the ball off each shot. Also hard to hold onto anything if it’s covered in oil
The one thing you didn't consider, is wiping being part of the pre-shot routine as a way to reduce bowler stress and increase shot focus. If you usually wipe as part of your routine, and then start not wiping, it could throw you off and vice versa also. What are your thoughts about that?
Team wipe, even if theres no oil I still like wiping because some centers are dirtier than others. Once the ball comes out the return it might have some scuff marks or other debry
Call me crazy, but I'm not a fan of the leather shammy. I've tried several different styles, and none of them take the oil off the ball better or faster than a good old fashioned microfiber towel. The old school ring woven microfiber towels were the best.
When the micro fiber towels can out my friends sister was selling them and he gave me some. I think they worked well. Regular towels just seemed to spread the oil around the ball.
To join the conversation at hand, I don't score enough to be meticulous, so I scoop off the oil with my left hand, and wipe it off on my pants, like my mom taught me NOT TO DO! LOL

Possibly yes.
Big thing about wiping is to prevent oil from absorbing into the ball week after week. Plus, I think, it's good to have a pre-shot routine.
Any real difference between the wiping pad shown vs a microfiber towel on effectiveness or other concern?
Brunswick should make a ball return that cleans your ball as it comes back to you. Save my arms from getting so tired!
