    As an amateur with woodworker, i typically feel overpowered with the entire arrangement th-cam.com/users/postUgkxrYREG3-7f1Aqk9ams3ZESRNzGnfdUtyQ . Be that as it may, this arrangements drove me through with much clarity and effortlessness woodplans. Works i now work like a genius. That is great!

    I like how you back the mitered pieces with a straight cut piece to make a mitered rabit joint.

    • @user-le4bx1jw3f
      @user-le4bx1jw3f 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Tmac 1 Ik its 4 months later, but I'll try explaining it to you. They combined two techniques to create the joint: 1-miter, 2: rabbet. A miter joint is when you join two pieces of wood together by cutting the edges to join up. In this case, they cut the edges at a 45 degree angle, so that the joint is at a 90 degree angle. This is shown at 4:27. A rabbet joint is usually a grooved cut on one piece of wood for the other to fit into. Instead of cutting away material to create this groove, they backed the main board with smallerpiece of wood to create the indentations on the top and bottom edges for the top and bottom boards to fit onto. This is shown at 5:57.

    Is it really enough to just use glue to hold the joints? I guess the studs hold the weight so it doesnt matter?

    Putting the hatch on the underside - hinged, with a latch - would be cleaner and easier to access with the TV set up.
    A functional question though: How do you control the Sky box with the remote?

      Not sure what they will do, but you can purchase IR relays (IR relays have a sensor discreetly placed above with another transmitter stuck in font of the device (where the IR lens is located) that needs to be controlled. Quite inexpensive items. Cheers, David

    I'm window shopping for something similar. The only concerning part is cooling for the electronics inside of the shelf. As electronics gets better, the demand for cooling increases. Wouldn't putting them inside the shelf increase the likeliness of oveeheating?

      Minimum Brad if you can do it for them kinda prices and still make money then you’ll be a genius! Some of the wardrobes ikea sells cheaper than you can buy the materials for, that’s before making it. If you have the skill and tools to make bespoke furniture don’t sell yourself cheap. If working for yourself you need to earn at least £250/300 a day. To do that you would need to knock out maybe 2 pieces a day with materials cost. If you’re skilled you will be doing yourself a disservice by working below market value

    • @kelerhtz

      There are other strong means such as using metal but not sure if they are any better. They could have made it a little thicker in framing but it would probably be far stronger than what is needed. What they have is strong enough with room to spare.

    • @stlalways6715
      @stlalways6715 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couple suggestions.
      Double your brackets. One on each side of the king stud and throw a couple L brackets to disperse the stress down.
      May as well be sure your use of a shelf that size isn’t limited.
      Put your hidden shelf below. A couple cheep hinges and a magnet to keep it closed is really Easy. All you need is a small hole to feed your TV power cable and infrared sensor wire through.
      Also if you are comfortable with moderate skill carpentry add a side pocket drawer.
      Check out hidden shelf storage videos. Easy place to store remotes etc or a firearm depending on your tastes.
      Have fun!

  • @kevinb7026
    @kevinb7026 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Very nice. As a recommendation if you do this build in the future is to place the L-brackets so they attach to the wall above the shelf. Steel's preferred directional force is tension. You still have plenty of margin installing underneath but you would get less flex and higher margin placing them above.

    • @jonbaxter6929
      @jonbaxter6929 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The stress block diagram of a cross section of the horizontal part of the steel would still show a compression in the lower part of the member, therefore doesn't really matter. As long as the whole angle is well fixed into the timber, buckling (which is the compression failure mechanism) will still be resisted by stopping rotation of the angle in the lateral direction. :)

    The floating platform is very well secured with the steel brackets, however the cantilever height focusing at the center of the TV screen should reach the height of >1000 to 1200mm from floor. This is recommended by experts for our vision when seated to watch TV. It would be nice by adding a sound bar by the side and a sub woofer on the floor. Just an informative suggestion for improvement.

    I really like your videos and they inspire me to start building with wood again. Right now making carpentered furniture in a friends workshop and I’m in love with the whole process. Thanks for rekindling my love for wood working. BUT PLEASE! Please use less shitty music for your videos. Those royalty free tracks are ruining every decent content creators hard work. there are so many sites to get decent music from for next to nothing (money-wise). Maybe consider putting some of your YT-revenue to good use and change those mind boggelingly bad music tracks. All the love from Germany

    Just a small tip guys. If the receiver in indeed located in the space under the TV and the lid is put on, you will need to install a silent fan to draw cooling air into that space. Even solid-state receivers get warm, and if the air isn‘t circulated, it will overheat. The build of the shelf in absolute genius and the finished shelf is a real eye-catcher 👍👍👍

    Your music has got nicer and more mellow than this head-banging stuff, since you moved to Nelson.

    Awesome project! That big clamping on the ceiling, in France we call that "Ciel d'ébéniste" translates to cabinetmaker's sky! Used it everyday for most of my lutherie work, super cool technique!

    I may have over done that bracket with a 10ga tube of 2x3 inch steel welded to an 8ga metal plate running the length of the stud, oh well. I can stand on it with not even the slightest flex.

    Can't believe that you still had the TV power showing. Why did you not move the power point to behind the TV?

    Looks great, but how well does the infared remote work if the box is in the cubby?

      Errrmmm yep. I was looking for this comment. Set the box to Sport Channel. Or Porn, and then close it up.

    I'll admit at first I thought the whole plywood thing was naff, but the result really does look nice.

    Now that is the proper height for a TV! A little tired of craning my neck at TVs that are placed above a fireplace or otherwise up high.
