  • In this video i will show you how to make activated carbon from charcoal at home.
Activated carbon is widely used in many industries, and we use it extensively in the health and food industries.
You can make water filter and air filter with carbon active.

A coffee grinder would work wonders. Does it need to go in an oven? Wouldn't a microwave be much faster and energy efficient if the point is to remove moisture? Does it need to be ground up so finely first because if not, draining the liquid off will be much quicker and grinding can be done afterwards.

What did you wash the charcoal with please. How much charcoal is used with the CACL solution? After the charcoal was sieved, there were small and large pieces. What is the significance of this step and what are the qualities of the large and small pieces?

Gee, when I made my first batch, I didn't think of wetting it first before breaking it up, I did use a strainer to eliminate the dust though. Since I already bought the Aqua Tech carbon stuff first, I'm gonna use both separating the layers with play sand and see how it goes....?

Or is it the powder one that comes out of the sieve that's the activated charcoal or the other one

All the charcoal in the solution is activated. sieving only to separate activated Carbon powder from coarser grains.
With larger parts, you can make an activated carbon filter for water, and you can use activated carbon powder to make a face mask, make cosmetics and use it in food.

It doesn't look porous. I think it's way too low of heat. Should be above 250C / 480F to 600C / 1112F when using a chemical like Calcium chloride. The carbon doesn't open and activate at 100C / 210F. FYI people.
If you are consuming the charcoal, the best option is 0.5 cup of pulp free lemon or lime juice.

    • @bella-bee
      @bella-bee หลายเดือนก่อน

Have a look at Cody’s lab He tested the ability of charcoal he’d ’activated’ with CaCl and also NaOH, and lemon juice, and a water control. They filtered out iodine to the same degree as the water treated charcoal, except the lemon, which only manage 50%. So these methods don’t work and lemon is worst! Probably because it was actually clogging the charcoal.

@@funnyworld-dj5vf the process here doesnt work. Elemental carbon is a chemically robust/stable substance, as is calcuim chloride, and citric acid is a pretty a weak acid with no affect on pure carbon either. Since activated carbon/charcoal has been chemically etched to increase its surface area to allow particles and molecules into pores and vallies opened up from the etching process to become trapped, adding two chemicals together with such little reactive potential to carbon at the same time will not achieve the desired effect.
This video and many like it are designed to fool those in the organic and homeopathic communities to spread the veiwership of this video with a fraudulent method, but listing chemicals they are already comfortable with, and lying about how easy it is. The only thing you will get from this procedure is salty lemon smelling charcoal.

@@CreativePeoples I would advise against soaking the lining of filters, they are not waterproof (even in the case of the state of the art polish fp5 filters) and will be ruined.
the "proper" way to do this is to cut a filter open across the middle and exchange the carbon with one of a similar or greater coarseness, tape the cut and tally mark the filter all while wearing respiratory protection. DO NOT DO THIS ON GOST FILTERS! this will result in asbestosis!
*this comment assumes that you are using carbon filters, in the case of a paper mask the answer is no, either use a mask designed for the purpose of limiting biological spread (such as a surgical/gas mask) or don't use a mask at all. gloves will lower your chance to catch a disease by a significantly higher margin.

@@CreativePeoples why dose lemon juice work? And can you use limes?

    • @CreativePeoples

Lemon juice has the ability to activate carbon due to its citric acid.
Almost any type of alkaline substance can be used to activate carbon, but if you do not have enough equipment and are not familiar with the chemical process, be careful not to use activated carbon produced in food and cosmetics.

put charcoal in a kiln/foundry in a container with a small exhaust and set it to a high temperature, this should create graphite, which is naturally present in small quantities upon pyrolysis of wood to create the charcoal. A poor choice of stock rich in contaminants will lead to impure charcoal which is also electrically conductive despite graphite presence. might I ask what do you want conductive carbon for? I might further assist you if you wish.
