      Thanks. We hope so. They cost little which can be good and sometimes bad as people won’t pay repair bills that are worth more than the car.

    I have a75 CDTi. British Racing Green Connoisseur with full BRG leather interior and carpets. Travelled 470 miles to collect it at Colliers Wood London. One (1)owner, however it was terrible state never looked after. Because I travelled so far I ended up still paying £1200. Way too much. However I am lucky enough to do all repairs myself. Owned it now 3.3 years. Just fitted new drop-links seems to be a yearly event. Suspension top bearing and the usual brake pads and service. Nothing more. I really enjoy the car. So I fully understand your commitment. Happy and safe driving.

    I split my time between the UK and Estonia and didn't want to lay out a fortune on a car there so I came across an 2003 MG ZTT for 1800 euros, spent about 1000 euros on it and it's been brilliant for 2 1/2 years now and still going strong. 200K kilometres (124K miles on the clock).

      They are fantastic cars and low prices make them affordable. I paid £900 for mine and spent an extra £1000 to get the car in a good condition for more years of service.

    I love my Rover 75 (2004 2.5 V6 Facelift Platinum Gold Club) even though she (my wife calls her my mistress) has cost me a fortune over the years (I bought it in 2006 with 15,000 km, purchase price AUD$31 k plus ~$40k in repairs/maintenance including $10k for the gear box). Mechanically, she is now good, mainly because I have replaced just about everything (e.g. thermostat 3 times) inside and out and I now only drive her on Sundays (currently 162,000 kms). She has a special treat coming up at the end of March 2022 - a paint respray and rebadging (AUD $3k plus parts - a bargain) - all with the wife's blessings 🙂.

    • @vp1290
      @vp1290 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PS I have been sick for Rovers all my life. I previously had a 1983 3.5 V8 SD1 Vanden Plas that I also loved for many years (with the same wife 🙂). I also spent a fortune on her over the years but sadly she was written off in a rear end accident - she was well insured and I got much of my investment back (the Rover, not the wife 🙂 ). The bottom line is, if you want to buy an old car you love or enjoy for a bargain price then you have to pay (to others or yourself) what it costs to keep it at its best, otherwise don't buy it at all because another beautiful car will end up in the scrap heap. The gain on investment in such cars is the pleasure they give you, not the capital growth.

    • @LivetoDriveUK
      @LivetoDriveUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, all mistresses cost a fortune… don’t they? 🤔😁 Always nice when the wife understands. Fran (my wife) is very accommodating about my need for cars although of course most of us (including myself) have a limit to how much we can spend. Thanks for watching and your comments.

      Oh tell me about it. Me too. I originally come from Birmingham; the home of Longbridge. 2nd car was a Metro, 3rd car was a Maestro, 4th a Metro, 5th an MG Metro, 6th was a Rover Montego, 8th a Rover 800, 9th a Rover 214 (R8). You are right, buying such older cars and expecting to not pay out is a mistake and many cars end up going to the scrapyard. I have purchased “Reggie” with the plan to keep for years. I have a Rover 75 CDTi 2003 British Heritage Green, i bought it for £4000 in March 2010. Since then i have spent £14000 plus on the car. It sits now with many major parts replaced in the last four years, including front & Rear sub frames, brake, suspension, system parts replaced, Radiator, Condenser, alternator, starter, oil cooler and more. Drives like a new car and is chipped to 165bhp, i do not rake the car but the extra speed & Torque is handy on the motorway.

    Looks a very clean example. Pre pandemic these cars we're going for peanuts but now £2 to £4,000 is going rate. The 1.8s are known for head gasket issues due to design fault, they hold only just enough water. Regularly check water level in rad, and not wanted water in the Plenium drains. The Diesels are the best buy, bullet proof BMW engines, cheap tax £220, 50mpg and turbo, but can also be chipped.
    Now a days some mechanics are on commission to get newish cars service above £1000, so what you have spent is nothing in comparison.

    • @LivetoDriveUK
      @LivetoDriveUK  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is. I thought it was worth the money spent. To be fair I budgeted the spend before I had even purchased the car. I understand the head gasket issues and a future video will highlight what that can cost… as I have just had it done (originally changed in 2010) but now replaced with a multilayer one that should last… for the miles it does. Hate looking at all the cars that get advertised as “parts” due to cost of repair. I do accept everyone has a budget, we all have one, but some people will run away even though they may spend £2K on a replacement… they then know little about.

  • @pss1967
    @pss1967 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I like the fact that you take pride in the Rover and have spent what I'd consider a relatively small sum of money on fixing the faults and making sure that the brakes and the tyres are in tip top condition cos nobody should skimp on them. You've got a very nice car for the £2K you've spent on buying and fixing the faults.

    • @LivetoDriveUK
      @LivetoDriveUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I certainly do take pride. Had many Austin Rover cars in the past. Not sure if I felt I had to… originating from Birmingham. I agree with you that the amount spent is not a lot in respect of the work and the money should be seen as more of an ongoing investment; although I will not be selling the car. Just enjoy keeping older cars on the road. The work is not complete yet but will be done over time. Thanks for watching and your comment.

    If you factor in the labour and the knowledge of the mechanic, I'd say that was a very fair amount. I've spent a fair bit on Rosie, but fortunately, the Diesel is easy to service and can be done at home for under £100. I'm seeping more than the car these days!
    What it costs me in basic maintenance yearly on Rosie is still less than what my sister pays monthly for a car she'll never own.

    • @LivetoDriveUK
      @LivetoDriveUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. The problem (my opinion) is that cars are becoming more out of reach to the majority and this means many more on finance, PCP’s, leasing and the majority therefore will never own their own car. Yes a bill for £1100 on a car that cost around £1000 does sound a lot. However Reggie is generally in very nice condition, so the fact that the overall cost of Reggie is just over £2k makes it a bit of a bargain in my opinion.
    Good Rover 75’s are becoming rare now and you have a nice example.
    I was tempted to buy a 75 a couple of years ago when they were cheap and I’m now wishing I had done that.
    I like Rover group cars having owned an MG ZS180 some years back. I have to admit I’m quite envious of the fact that you own a particularly nice 75, so much so that I’m seriously tempted to start looking for a 75 myself.

As the plan is to keep it until it gets passed down to the kids to sell I will do my best to look after it. I understand the “looking at but not buying” feeling very well. Missed a beautiful MG Metro for that very reason. I think the 75 just might make a good investment in the future as the prices are still quite low. I keep reminding myself “you don’t only live once, you only die once… you live everyday” so until I run out of funds I will keep going 😁 thanks for watching and your comments 👍

    Put it this way: if you are not willing to fork out for these basic repairs to get it roadworthy and safe, then you shouldn’t buy an old car. I totally agree that this was necessary and Not a waste of money. These repairs would have had to get done eventually, quite likely even in the first two years of owning it, and basicallly it’s a case of catching up on repairs that should have been done by the previous owner if they wanted to keep driving it.

      I agree. The car appears to have had a relatively easy life but in the latter years I think the jobs were starting to add up and it needed to find a home that was willing to invest in both time and money. As I will be keeping the car I have no issue paying to maintain it correctly. Thanks for watching and your comments.

      I would say… film it! I have always, genuinely said I “take my hat off” to the people who do their own work. It’s not just the saving on garage labour costs (although I think the specialist in Derby are competitive) but the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself. I appreciate all of us theoretically could do it if we had the time, patience and inclination but personally I don’t have the confidence, particularly when it comes down to doing brakes. In my humble opinion, videos that show someone doing the actual work usually perform better than ones that don’t. Thanks for watching and your comments.

    Imagine, for one moment, the cost of replacing the same on a european/japanese equivalent? The great thing about the older rovers/mg's/land rovers, is they are "easy to work on", as they were assembled by humans, ( Yes, there are a few in longbridge), meaning labour charges at a garage are reasonable for those jobs deemed "undoable" on the front drive. The robotic manufacturing line has created a "throwaway" commodity.

    £2,000 in total for such a great car, which is now in tip top condition, is a real bargain. A friend of my recently bought a s/h BMW for over £10,000 on hp only to find the car was only worth £8,000, so he has lost £2,000. Since a few weeks. the 75 drew my attention. I thought I'd found one a 2.0 petrol with very low mileage (30447 miles) but since the seller didn't respond to me and he didn't mention his phone number I missed the occasion, and somebody snapped it away half an hour before I found out the guys contact details, unfortunately.
    Right now I'm driving a Mazda Xeos 6, my 2nd one by the way. The current one 10years now and still running like a champ.
    Meanwhile I've seen a couple others with 93205 miles, but it is a 2.5 and they seem to have engine issues (cooling fins) and being the less reliable of the lot.
    The V8 seems very nice but to heavy on the roadtax and consumption I guess! ;-)

      If I had my preference it would have been a 2.5 KV6 with automatic. Mainly because I think bigger cars are suited to the lazy approach of an auto. Reggie was at the right price and condition so a 1.8 non turbo is what I actually bought. I think most engines (even the BMW diesel) has caused problems for some.
