As an ex para, I just turned 60. I don’t tab like I once did, of course, but I now live in the Canadian Rockies where to ensure safety, I need basic survival gear while out for a hike. This includes a portable gas stove, water, a can of stew/soup/ravioli, chocolate, bright coloured rain gear, socks, leatherman, hat, gloves, map and compass, and an extensive first aid kit etc. Latterly, I’ve acquired a Garmin InReach for emergencies.
People of a certain age, like me, tend to ignore technology. A GPS is vital but not foolproof because it’s vulnerable to battery failure, malfunction, satellite outages or whatever.
To provide more protection, I have a Suunto Vertical watch with maps and GPS. In really remote places, like the Arctic, I carry an emergency locator beacon.
Things happen here. My highly experienced mate was killed by a grizzly bear. Not much can prevent that except providence, but a lot more can happen short of that extreme.

From one old soldier to another, good job!!! I try to take a walk daily, as life allows. I keep a small pack on me with similar stuff. A waterproof jacket, a turkish towel or a shemagh, a VERY small medical kit, a water bottle, a hot drink thermos, maybe gloves and a hat, depending on the time of year. A notebook/pen, and my electronics stuff. I also keep an emergency blanket tucked up in there too. No idea how much it weighs, but it isnt enough to bother me when I carry it. At a guess, with water and coffee in the thermos, probably 10-15 lbs? Enough to know I have a pack, but not heavy enough to care.
My days of humping 70 lbs worth of gear are long behind me. The chronic injuries from doing that, well, they are currently in their heyday lol.
Carry on sir! Keep your powder dry!

Pretty much a lifelong habit of mine. You stick to what you know and are taught in the army. I walk 5 to 15km a night with 15kg in suburbia at night.
Distance is reliant on intent. A brisk 7k in a hour is my basic. But if I'm preparing for a 2 day hike overnight camp I aim at the 15km. That's in the flat but hikes are 10 to 12km per day, with hills. I use a similar pack but tan with some Molle. However it's not totally uncommon to see a few ppl doing same with civvie packs. Have a yarn to them and they are getting reay for a great Northern walk, Kosciusko trip. Leading up from February, I'm more likely to see same, but like me at it 5 of 7 days as they are training up for a kokoda trip. I also have several state forests national parks etc nearby, so it's not uncommon around here.
Also those weighted walking TAB aren't terms used here. Here the term in the army it's force march

Once again, great video, I think our generation are more aware of "what if", being out in the sticks up a hill, I ensure that we have ability to have heat food and have enough light away from the mains supplies, lots of tinned food including lots of nourishing soup. Being ex Merchant Navy, I think of surviving if out in the wilds without support, similar kit to yours. Lots of folk think this is daft, good on you. All best to you and "Trace Round" Cheers Tony and Sally

Goo.d vid, and I know exactly what you mean.
I carry a ex Radio pack, when I go for a walk down out local woods. I carry a folding saw, secateurs, a poncho and bungees, a BCB cooker, mug, with some Dragon fuel blocks and a flask and a pint of water. I have a knife and striking rod, a pair of leather gloves and a good first aid kit. Phone, wallet and keys go in the top pocket of the pack. Oh, and a pair of sunglasses. I stop off for a fresh cup of coffee, and just enjoy where I am . Sometimes, I will drive over to somewhere local, then walk around there, doing pretty much the same. I average around 3 to 5 miles, depending on the terrain. My pack ways 71/2 kg’s. It’s good for moral, to sit down somewhere and make a cup of tea. “It’s best to have something you might need, than need something you don’t have”.
    All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧😉

EDC: Wallet, pen, notebook, watch, lighter, cellphone, water, choccy bar, Swiss Army knife, small FAK (including mylar sheet), zoot top, two hexi blocks. Add shopping.
If you carry tourniquets, carry a marker pen also.
If the weather worsens (11-Jan-25) during this cold snap, I might strap my crampons to my backpack. In the past IN London, I've actually needed them to help a local pensioner get through a frozen water iced up tarmacked path uphill to his home. Had to rush back home to dig them out.

My wife & I do a lot of hiking here in Arizona, mostly in the Superstition Mountains 40 miles east of PHX. Nearly an identical loadout, minus the rain gear b/c of the "severe clear" weather we enjoy here 99% of the time. We carry 2x MRE main courses in a zip lock bag in case we get hungry. Where I live we have a large area of parkland, bush and sporting fields called Whalan Reserve. It's 500m as the mortar bomb flies from my home. One night it was very foggy and became a bit displaced chasing the dog. I couldn't see very far but it was a clear night. I looked up and there was the Southern Cross. Using that I was able to plot my path back home, I kid you not. Within ten minutes I came cross landmarks I recognised but it was using those navigation skills that saved me wandering around for however long in the fog cursing and tripping. Never underestimate where or what you carry. And despite being an urban area we did have a teenager die from snakebite there a few years back.

Excellent video. I live in the UK, but I also lived in Australia for years. Lots of isolated areas in Oz.
I was chatting about it today, actually, about the education system for kids. A lot of it is useless in the real world. These skills should most definitely be taught to kids in the UK. Life skills like prepping and cooking, mending kit, washing clothes, changing a car tyre etc etc. The list is huge. Most people struggle to look after themselves.

Yeah loved your statement ''all good soldiers should be able to knock up a brew'' or words to that effect, wholeheartedly agree with you on that! If I go out into the woods on my bike there's nothing better than sitting down and making a brew, if it's raining or even just a bit chilly same as you I have my poncho - nowadays I use a Dutch Army DPM one, good bit of kit - and can make a shelter. Even if it's not raining just pitching it in a lean-to style with some protection from the wind and getting a brew going is a big difference.
I'd add to that a pocket knife, Swiss Army knifes are the bees knees. I always have one on me.

    "even empty that stinks"
A couple of days ago on a local autobahn an HGV turned over and lost its cargo of real-life, actual chicken shit. Later that day, long after all had been cleared up, my sister drove past there and said you could still smell it. The clean up crew certainly had a shit job on their hands.

Common sense mate, when I go out with the missus for a walk, she always laughs at me for having a day pack with a jetboil, some scran, a poncho and a first aid kit. That was until we got stuck in some bad weather up in the Yorkshire dales, once the brew was on and the poncho up she realised why I carry it. Keep on tabbing.

10 kg is an optimal weight. If you go any heavier, your attention will be focused on the weight on your back and your physical effort, not on your surroundings. You'll have less attention for the natural beauty of the area and all the small details that can make a routine walk special.

As a non military man, who is admittedly unfit, what is the best backpack to use. I have a very snazzy looking Deuter Race X air, looks ok but for the life of me I find uncomfortable, even when empty, is an ex army packpack the way yo go? I ask because I do need to get a bit fitter, maybe take up walking more.

@ukchris64 well I have to admit I'm no expert and I've never tried out different packs, I use my old issue patrol pack which I managed to keep hold of when I left the army in 2015. It works really well for me.

Sounds a lot like our old basic CEFO loading list - just add foot powder, spare socks, boot cleaning kit ... and 100m of green string, everything waterproofed. At least you don't have to add b*mbs, bull*ts and batteries as well!

    • @simonh6371

The old CEFO contents is a good basis for day hiking. It was designed so we could hold out for 24 hours in the field without large pack with sleeping bag etc.
