if you go over the bottom of the jigs with sally hansens hard as nails the paint will stay on so much longer without chipping..i do it to all my buck tail jigs and also i coat the thread wraps where the buck tail hair is tied on..
Hey - I wanted to mention to you after watching one of your videos with my rod - you have THE most awesome hookset! I thought I set hard, but you've got me beat there. I think we can establish a hookset range with rickset on one end and toddset on the other.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing hahaha toddset , thanks John. I've had the all or nothing mentality my whole life. I notice you set right to the point of load on the skinner rod. In my mind, that's all the set needed to not potentially overset and lose the fish. I get excited, as you can see lol.
I'm curious, when netting fish for the guys in the bow, why do you grab the net from the empty side of the boat, then go to all the trouble of squeezing past everyone when you could just walk unobstructed up the empty side?
Hello John. I have found on occasion that I did hook up more if allowed my rig to scope out a little. I think because it puts the teaser closer to the bottom which might be where the majority of fluke prefer to stay. And why does Rick always look like he wants to high stick the fluke right from the bottom of the ocean and straight into the boat. Looks really awkward sometimes watching him fish.
Hey John thanks for the great videos. I tried Montauk point the week before last and only got two big porgy. Seems as though nobody was catching Any fluke
Great trips like that sure make up for those tough ones! John, I see all you guys use different color combinations to determine what might be the hot color for the day. In your opinion does having different color tandem bucktails/colors of gulp on both the high & low produce better than having uniform colors on both? Does water depth determine the decision in using either or?
Love the videos and the fact you were going to let the bug girl go but we all know as a fisherman we should never handle any fish with a rag as it removes their protective slime coat that keeps them healthy
Wow, Rick should open the boat to one outsider every trip who must fish the other side of the boat, cover the fuel cost, stop and net every fish, and can't speak at all unless spoken to. The line would be a mile long to get on board because, as he likes to point out, and there is no denying, "he puts you on the fish!!".
are you fishing a charter or on a friends boat? looking to catch some fluke in next 2-3 weeks and looking for a good boat, as long as hurricane doesnt screw up fishing. thanks in advance
Hi John, a question about fishing big structures like those wind turbines and that deep water petroleum platform that’s near me in the Sound, is it allowed ? Are there special regulations ? They have to hold fish, especially way out at Block Island. Thanks. Great video, at least somebody’s kicking fish a _ _ !
I'm not 100% sure. Certainly you can fish the Northville pipeline, but not sure if there are restrictions on the platform. I've seen boats pretty close to the wind turbines.
I see that you switch from a blue reel to a white. Is that because you have a second ready to go in case you snag bottom, or different lb test line switches?
I couldn't hear a word of what was said on the VHF. That being said, I was on a charter out of Montauk fishing the same area this weekend and saw that same law enforcement boat. Was this Saturday?
They were instructing the party boat to not throw anything over the side and that they were about to be boarded by National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
Haven't seen action like that since my block island trip lol. I have a question if Skinner or anybody with anymore knowledge/time on the water a reply would be appreciated. In June I'm mostly fishing tight inshore or off jetties here in NJ. By July I'll still be fishing the jetties or a bit further off the shore by boat. By August I'm fishing the deeper wrecks in 60-90ft with mostly rigs due to depth and scope if I used bucktails. What I've noticed is that the tide matters more the tighter inshore you get but in August when I look deeper in those wrecks the tides seem to have a lesser effect. So I read through the forums and find that current has more effect on fish. I find the direction in which the current moves and won't you know it I find that the currents move water south from RI and MA and LI down through the Raritan even further down south into my neck of the woods off the jersey shore. So my question is if I have a SE wind moving south to north for example going into a current flowing southward does this create an ocean equivalent of wind against tide or does it not matter further offshore. And the opposite scenario as well. What if I have a NE wind flowing from the north in the same way the currents are moving does that create a faster drift making it hard to keep bottom or does it make for a good day? Sorry for the long comment I find myself trying to make fishing as much of a science and study the waters as thoroughly as possible. I'm somewhat new to fishing as I've been fishing seriously for about two years which is nothing compared to most people fishing
Wind against current is wind against current regardless of the depth. This results in the worst scoping, even if the boat isn't moving much. A tricky thing about offshore is that sometimes the top and bottom currents move differently. On a trip we did Tuesday there was no wind but we still needed 6 ounces. As we dropped our rigs they initially went under the boat, but then scoped out away from the boat. This was 100 feet.
The 3 dislikes are the guys that dumped the fish off the Montauk star lol. The whole video in like Ricks got a 4oz he was scoping a bit more the everyone.
What’s your opinion of using live mud minnows / killies as opposed or in conjunction with gulp ? I’m in NJ and it’s out fishing gulp nearly 7:1 minnow to gulp. Granted the larger fluke are typically on 6” gulp w/ buck tail - the raw circle hook with mud minnow is absolutely unstoppable
30 years ago killies were a popular bait for fluke. I doubt you can buy them now, at least on LI. They are not necessary. Any comparisons we've done jigging Gulp against other baits, Gulp won. That said, if you have a convenient free supply of them, they'll catch plenty of fish. I'm glad you use circle hooks. One of the problems with bait is that it gut hooks a lot of fish.

It's a second rod all rigged in case one breaks a rig off.
I was going to question Rick’s choice of using the slimwave rod for fluke but it seems to be working very well.
Not a slimwave - a white nexus. It's his spare as he broke his rig off on his skinner rod and the other was rigged and ready to step in.
