Great adjustment from what you saw from Doc. Sometimes I stay with what I know should work rather than what is working. Another good lesson learned. Thanks.
Out of the many things you've taught me and your other loyal viewers, one of the most important lessons is to be observant and don't be afraid to make minor adjustments. Skinner, I try to do you justice in my own videos and with anyone that boards my boat to go fishing. Much and continued respect!
It’s so interesting how a small adjustment like that is completely changing the bite. It’s crazy that the fish weren’t keying into the normal action you put on the bucktail. Great video Skinner!
Doc putting it down! With these lighter jigging rods, you must adjust your initial lift. Stick em baby! Have a great fall season gentlemen. Love from Lewes, Delaware.
Nice fishing and great videos. I fish out of Northport LI and recognize the water colors. I think I could guess where you’re fishing, but I won’t. I’ve been fishing LI Sound, Orient Pt, Peconic Bays, and Montauk for over 55 years now. We are lucky to have such great fluke fishing. Tight lines everyone.
This new moon has been great. We had the best day in 10 years--fishing in the harbor. Boat caught the limit on fluke, stripers, and bluefish... 3/5ths were mine (including an 8lb doormat) using your techniques.
Great point to pay attention to the details around you. That's the great thing about fishing with others, there is always something to learn. Sometimes it's based on the day and others it just something new. "get your helmet" 😂😂 nice work John. It was a good time fishing with you guys.
John I did the same thing last weekend with my rig. By just dipping the rod tip a little and then lifting it up you can impart enough action to get those gulp grubs moving without ever lifting the sinker off the bottom. This technique is used a lot in freshwater. Think they call it drop shot.
What was the drift speed? The chicken rig works really well in medium to high drifts; better than most other rigs, mostly because it presents so well; partially because it doesn't get tangled up much and, if you use dropper loops, it doesn;t spin often either. Jeff Viamari has a good video demonstrating how to tie the chicken rig. FYI, we use it inshore fishing, such as at Block Island, so it's not just for the Nantucket Shoals.
What "Doc" is basically doing is drop-shotting...A killer smallie and largemouth technique.Even without his sinker lifting off the bottom the two baits of the hi-low are dancing around when he creates slack then comes tight..Deadly at times..As you can see here..
Skinner was wise to copy Doc. I found that using a heavier weight & almost dragging... I said almost... was more effective than being snag paranoid . If you miss a hit let the line out a little to touch bottom and keep your bait close to the fish. Today is August 13, 2022. Summer doldrums. Plus I was kinda tired from doing an all nighter with no sleep the night before. That made me a bit slower but aware of that so I tried harder ... Still looking for my double digit fish. It's amazing at how badly fluke want a pc of terribly chewed fluke belly.
Bro you guys are catching limits and I’m up in Jersey with my dad uncle and brother catching barely 18s, most guys in jersey don’t like you but I think it’s amazing how you catch so much fish
doc went gangster the first half but then he poked a sleeping bear...good video as always..seem the high low rig work great many many times yet i refuse to switch over cause at sum point in the day the rapid bucktailing always seems to come thru..
Thanks! It took a full season and 4 rejected prototypes to get it right, but it is awesome. I had a 9.5# on a 6-ounce bucktail a few hours ago. The rod handled both beautifully.
John- I think that it's possible that even with Doc's soft action rod that he was still inducing movement of the teasers on his chicken rig even if he wasn't moving the sinker with rod bump action. The teasers are light weight and will more readily respond to "guitar-string plucking action" with the bottom of the rig (sinker) acting like an anchor on the bottom. Just a strong guess on my part. If you could drop a camera down near his rig you might be able to more readily see what his rig is doing while he's working it in his way.
Here in California we have a similar fish called a “Halibut”……..I wonder if the same technique will work? I’ve never fished for them but this style looks fun.
Can I call you daddy, John ? Always a pleasure to watch pal thanks for again for sharing your knowledge. You’ve done wonders for my all around fishing game.

@JohnSkinnerFishing was wondering if you could go over in a little more detail how you bleed the fish what exactly are you cutting? Are you just cutting the gills in half or at the base of them, and will that Technique work on other fish such as sea bass stripedbass etc. thanks for the info.
John, what reel are you using? You once recommended a Quantum BC with a flipping switch. I bought the 100 series model.
