This story has some holes in it. The fact that the son was her age and the affair was only 10 years, that’s enough proof to show she’s lying.
Get lawyers and a PI ASAP before anything is done. But instead of doing this, they bring two perfect strangers into the house. The mother is painfully gullible. But even if true, she is not a legal spouse and not entitled to anything.

First of all, GET A LAWYER! I get you want to play detective and solve this crime, but that could have been realy dangerous, and what would you have done if she caught you. In any legal or financial situation like this, you should always, always consult a lawyer first, he will help advise you through this, he will investigate her claims, and he will take care of you if it did go to court. Next get a PI, a professional who most definitely would have done a much better job then you, with a lot lower risk if getting caught, and probably better evidence as well. Never not be a skeptic, always investigate, and always let a professional handle it.

Hmm’ I’m no scholar but I’m fairly certain there are laws specifically regarding infidelity as in #1; it is illegal #1 addendum; even if it is not technically illegal in some jurisdictions it is still a matter of breach of contract. Apparently there are some people who don’t realize that wedding vows are in fact a legal contract between two individuals beholden to outline the reasonable expectations of each party one to the other. Typically it's the spouse that gets priority. The children come after when it comes to inheritance and they get the split everything regardless of legitimacy of the children.
It should be noted though that this is assuming the person didn't leave a will which considering that he was well respected in the community it's very likely he had a will.
A will is going to override the default. This means that if the guy had not left any money for this other family, it doesn't matter about biology, the will overrides it.
If a person says in their will that they would like all of their money to go towards the first Starbucks employee you see, then that it totally what they can do.
