    “Bee therapy” - I love it. I am a hobbyist who has suffered on occasion from debilitating depression. While I love the opportunity to gather honey, it is the bees that I value most. When I get home after work I will sit among my hives for an hour or more just watching the bees come and go. It is like a kind of meditation that allows me not to get caught up in my own head. So yeah, bee therapy. I got into bees because of a couple of lines from “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” by William Butler Yeats: “Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee, and live alone in the bee-loud glade.”

    Thanks Honey Girl! One of the reasons for so many swarms this spring is because of the mild winter we had. Most hives were able to continue raising brood during the winter so most got over populated and they swarm to resolve the crowding in the hive. Thanks again for the video, I enjoy listening to you talk about the bees!

    I agree, you keep your bees the way you want to. In a suit, without a suit, in the end we all accomplish the same thing. I wear my coat 90% of the time. Last year i started wearing Nitrile gloves only to force me to slow down and bee more careful working inside of my hive. But i do still wear my big gloves at times. Great video...keep doing what you are doing.

      @@TheHoneystead Yes i understand they are hard to come across. Our beekeeping season is just starting, yesterday was our first day for the pollen to come in. We still have about 18 in of snow in the bee yard. So i haven't used any gloves yet this year cause i haven't gone in my hives yet. But hopefully next week. So all going well my box of gloves will take me thru til winter and beyond. Take care. Love your channel so much

    I wore a suit most of the time because I’m mildly allergic to seriously reactive. Beekeeping allowed me to gain common sense over fear to the point I won’t panic over a hornet in the car and driving over a cliff in terror. I have seen mean swarms but they are very rare. I think everyone should experience having honey producers because it rounds out a person. Being gentle is a must in beekeeping.

    I'm not a medical doctor, so take this as you will, but I think it's a good idea to limit the amount of stings you might receive due to the possibility (some would say eventuality) that you develop an allergic reaction. There are several beekeeper TH-camrs who don't suit up and take multiple stings during activities like hive inspections, swarm captures, and colony removals and I just know the day is coming when at least one of them is going to announce that they can no longer beekeep because they developed a life-threatening allergy to the venom.
    If you do some research on your immune system, you'll (distressingly) discover that it's something of a double-edged sword. It's fantastic when it works as intended, but it doesn't take much for it to go off the rails and hit you with an anaphylactic-type response.
    Of course, allergic reactions can occur on a spectrum of severity, so you might get some warning that your body is starting to not tolerate the apitoxin...but then again, you might not. I personally wouldn't fool around with it when you don't have to, so several stings a month sounds plenty, even if you experience therapeutic benefit from envenomations due to your previous injury.
    Have fun with your hives!

    • @TheHoneystead
      @TheHoneystead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I completely agree! I have a dear family friend that grew up in a beekeeping family. She had to stop, because her last sting almost cost her life! I don’t mind a sting once a month... but I would definitely prefer it to be on my terms!

    • @fredleggett923
      @fredleggett923 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheHoneystead That's a healthy attitude. I wish those other TH-camrs I mentioned would do the same, but they're all macho gung-ho and don't seem to care (one of them received over sixty stings over the course of a few hours during a recent removal - pure insanity).
      Sorry to hear about your friend. I know it must really suck to have to stop doing what you're passionate about. I've had severe gastrointestinal issues to the point that I now have to absolutely avoid high-residue/high-fiber foods, like nuts and salads, otherwise I could develop a bowel blockage, which could kill me (it's not Crohn's disease, as I can eat gluten). I know that's not allergy related, but the result is the same, as I LOVED peanuts, almonds, and Caeser salads.
      Life sometimes throws you mean curve-balls.

    Look at that BEAUTIFUL queen 10:09. I'm one of those big guys......6'3" 270lbs......but I do suit up. Thought stings generally don't effect me much. I also don't enjoy them. lol. Probably the biggest reason I suit up is that I just can't seem to get over bees flying around my face without a vail.....with a vail, no biggy.

    Its ironic that you produce so many great clips about communities of little creatures that all work together for their common good. They produce a wonderful product that you harvest for us but what happens? You receive criticism for the way you chose to do it. You don't need to explain why you do or do not wear a suit. I wonder if the bees would produce any honey if a bunch of them sat and told the others "You shouldn't be doing it that way, do it this way".
