- Our apiary is booming and we decided to share how we do our walk-away hive splits! It is a quick and easy way to double your hives and let your bees raise their own queen!

Good strong splits, basically a pre-emptive Pagden artificial swarm. You said 3 weeks for the queen to hatch it will be 16 days. Really you need to go into the split and knock down some of the queen cells especially the ones that could already be capped as these queens will be more worker like (cells drawn from 3-4 day old grubs would be in the process of being capped, 31st March, 4 day old grub would be capped by 4th April) . Just leave open cells with grubs in now, better queens, less likely to be superseded later on. There will be an element of silent robbing for a few days and then all should be fine. Nice to see strong splits being performed. Good luck.

Unlike many beekeepers who have been more attracted to the commercial benefits of beekeeping, one can see and hear your care and passion for the bees. Thank you. I know people who is allergic too but have got bee colonies just they use means of protections very carefully
I got about 20 stingers from bees too and after that started allergically reaction I took some medicine
Now I have no reaction of bees stingers

As long as you get day old eggs the bees will know what to do! I’ve had success in doing walk away splits!

If your bees are really feisty your brave for wearing tight fitting pants lol. I’m lucky I work mine on shorts and flip flops. But I wear a veil cause o hate getting stung in the face.

How long did it take the first hive to grow to the point of needing to be split? Awesome video BTW. I am learning so much from you. I can't wait to try my hand at bee keeping when I get a homestead!

Great video, in my 4th yr slowly getting hang of this. I did similar splits last yr 5 of ten produced laying workers. The hives that did t make queens added multiple queen cells still no luck unless not enough drowns. . Had a question and was thinking of doing different. Would it be better to move queen with brood and such. This way the original non queen right hive will have the advantage of more foragers returning. As moving the queen my thought especially with drawn comb will be kind like a swarm.
I’ve thought a good bit about the walk away split and it really turns out to be an experiment. By keeping the queen in her original location, it ensures the original hive. The split is smaller and if it doesn’t make it, then I’m not out of a hive. If you move the queen to a new location and returning foraging go back to there original hive location, then I could lose my queen and her colony.
Ps so far all hives are doing great and I’ll check soon for signs of a Queen :)

Great videos. I'm new to your channel and finding your methods really interesting. Couldn't you find any frames with queen cells already formed to transfer? That would cut down the waiting time by at least a week.
+Jonny Oates Thank you! We actually found many practice Queen Cup cells when we did the split! It’s still very early in the season so I’m ok with waiting! Plus we have been preparing for this since last harvest and have made sure the bees will have more than what they need :)
I'm a 220 lb dude. No fat, and I only use 8 frame mediums. Biggest hives I've got. Because 10s, and deeps are too heavy! 😗 Bees will build better and faster in 8s as well. 🐝🐝🐝

Do you have to seal up the hive for a few days? What stops the bees from just flying back to the original hive?
The hive will know in just a few hours that they are without a queen and begin to react. Some of the bees will go back. They are the foragers and they know where their home is. The remaining bees are on the brood frames. They are nurse bees. They will stay with the brood until it hatches out. They will keep the new bees warm and fed till they graduate to their next job.
I love your bee videos! Do you treat for mites? I thought I might have seen some on the backs of some bee's. Just curious. No judgement either way!

I did introduce a mates queen to one of my splits, but this Colony is very special and I wanted to keep the genetics and allow them to re-queen. This was my 25 year old cut out Colony!

They don't really move the eggs. Workers build the queen cells around the eggs and feed the larvae that hatch out lots of royal jelly. This is one of my favorite ways to make splits. Thanks for sharing.

Nothing really! They will drift, but as the new worker bees begin to hatch.. they will identify that hive as their own! Since I did an even split/walk-away hive, they are both extremely full of bees, brood, and all of the above to survive:)

Why do the bees that where split from the queen not go back? I am not able to have bees now in my current location but hope to in the future. Thanks.
They can. But the idea is to get plenty of nurse bees in the split. They'll stay. Any foragers may return to the original hive. To account for "drift", some going back to the original hive, you can have the hives facing each other a few feet away, and then rotate positions a few times. Or if setting them next to each other, as they did on the stand, swap positions every other day for a week. Or you can do the split and take it three miles away for a month until you see a new queen. If you split in the early morning, most bees will still be in bed vs after lunch when 50% will bee out looking for food.

Why do you put the red bands around the boxes?
Ratchet straps help me sleep at night when I know big storms are coming. I’ve seen many friends loose hives due to high winds and covers flying off.

How good are you guys at finding the queen? That’s certainly a must when doing such a split. I know there are ways to do it without finding the queen though
I’m very good at finding the Queen, but knowing I had freshly laid eggs are a must!

Whenever I've tried this, I've always ended up with almost all of the bees in the one split that kept the queen and lots of dead brood in the other.
Try shake bees off the frames then put the empty of bee frames above a queen excluder nurse bees should come up then after 24 h put them in the new box with young lava on the frames that can form queens. I’ve done 4 this year and all worked and are now queen right. Hope it helped

I think you need to change some older frames for new foundations
Once my colonies are larger, I will add in new foundations. As of now, they are working on laying and collecting. Plus old comb is the best!

You didn't move the split very far from the original hive! Aren't you risking having most of the workers returning to the original?
+Richard Kane since my split was an even split, the new hive had many nurse bees as well as brood that will be hatching any day, this will help make up the shift in drift! The hive is doing really well and we have plenty of activity!
