    Uranium glass (aka Depression glass) is super popular because it glows under UV! Usually clear or pale green in normal light but can be any color. Not dangerous as long as it's not broken though I don't use my collection. I have a few pieces myself and I would LOVE a fish bowl - for decorative use, DUH!

      I know you weren't suggesting it, but outlining it here for anyone thinking to make an aquarium out of uranium glass: Don't. Although normal uranium glass pieces aren't dangerous to humans, I still wouldn't put small animals in it for their entire lifetime. I mean, it's not recommended to eat food off of them for humans. Most people collect them as display only. It is recommended to test pieces with a geiger counter, just to be safe, as most pieces are fine, but there's been a rare few found that ran pretty "hot" on the scale and it's better to know than assume they're all harmless.
      That said, there's also non-radioactive depression glass that also glows under UV lights (each glow different colors, it's a major topic in uranium glass groups if they "count" or not towards your collection) and those could be interesting for an aquarium if you found a piece large enough, and the glass didn't seep any of its chemicals into the water.

    I got monstera recently, and I just recently learned it drips water from its leaves through a process called guttation. Also, my grandparent's betta tank keeps getting algae blooms. I want to bring over my water test kit to see the parametres, but I think it's mostly a filter problem. They have a Tetra Whisper filter. Lights turn on at 9:00 am and off and around 8:30 am. Some live plants.

Even when I was little that sounded crazy to me, its a horrible message for kids or anyone else reading.

    U know that uranium fish bowl probably is something that is actually made with uranium. It was really popular back then to have neon green Glas and they put uranium in everything back then since they didn’t knew about the dangers of it and they’re also had vases and stuff made from this uranium Glas. Oh and sometime in history they even got uranium toothpaste :)

    Depression glass is glassware made in the Great Depression, and they didn't realise how dangerous uranium was, they just thought it would be pretty and glowy, so you end up with loads of this slightly dangerous glowy old glass. Collectors keep it in containers, but for some reason it's popular!
    Definitely a bad idea for a fish even if it wasn't a crappy bowl...!

    • @crazjtk
      @crazjtk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have a couple pieces of uranium glass. Not an expert on the stuff, but my research on it seems to indicate that the radiation exposure from it is very low, something like 10% of normal background radiation exposure.
      I probably still wouldn't keep live animals in/around it, but it's not particularly dangerous.

    • @teoz21
      @teoz21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@crazjtk the main issue was for the makers. There was a case of women painting glow in the dark watch faces with uranium based paint and because they would lick their brushes they all ended up with mouth/jaw bone cancer.
      With radiation exposure, it can build up over time. I imagine having a couple pieces won't be more than a a few milliseverts, so unless you're wearing it as jewelry or living in it as a fish, it's safe enough ☺️

    3:27 gold fish eat almost EVERYTHING in a planted tank! It's very difficult keeping them in a planted tank and most goldfish keepers don't even try with plants. Sometimes not even anubias survive these water piggies! My guys munch down on many of my anubias new leaves, especially my coffeefolia!
    I am saying this as a person with a fully planted tank that has 6 goldies in it.... But they are all babies and 3 are tiny babies. 4 of them are going into a pond soon and will be bothering my dojo loaches no more! The other two are pearlscales. I'm just hoping my little ping pongs don't decide to eat my plants when they get bigger. If they do they may have to get a job to pay me back. I have crypt flamingos in that tank.

    Uranium glass is probably called depression glass because it was made during the Great Depression. It's not actually dangerous as long as you don't break it, though most people keep it on display only (under UV light as that's how you get that green glow). It probably was not very healthy for those poor glass blowers to make it though...

    My goldfish are complete Jerks around feeding time. Smh. They dart up to the food at the top, take a flake and then dart away like mom just caught them raiding the cookie jar, not before splashing A LOT of water at me. Not to mention one time I stuck my finger in the tank during a water change to make sure it wasn't getting to cold and my fish swam up and BIT ME. LIKE BRO, I FEED YOU. IM NOT YOUR FOOD. I GIVE YOU FOOD. they now have a piece of paper on the glass listing their assult charges. Smh. Such jerks.

  • @mGrady159

    Depression Era glass is actually pretty sought after but not for kitchen use, they're collectable because during the great depression, American companies used whatever they had like glass high in lead (blueish tint) and glass high in uranium which has a very slight green tint until its put under uv light (I could be wrong about the light spectrum to achieve this effect) then it gets that glowing neon look to it, and I do believe it is mildly radioactive because every collection I've seen is very isolated. Absolutely insane to think about putting a fish in that thing though my God that's inhumane

    You think this is bad. My worst fish-keeping experience was when my mom got this bigger-than-average fish bowl from someone who was moving out of the city. In that bowl, there were two gouramis, two guppies, two angel fish, two something(it was a total of 10 fish 5 pairs of random species), and last but not least a pleco. My mom used to be like i should take care of those fish. i was 13 and that bowl gave me so much stress just by looking at it. I didn't keep a fish for 3 years after that.

    ok Criss the fish tank is uranium glass is glass which has had uranium, usually in oxide diuranate form, added to a glass mix before melting for coloration or in lames terms its a small amount of ground uranium the put in glass so it becomes florescent this is surprisingly safe because of the such small amount of radiation. and fun fact did you know that in WW.II on the dials and gauges of most aircraft and watches were laced with uranium paint so they could see them at night before a light weight light source was invented like LED lights which is commonly used today and Depression glass (transparent or semitransparent pale green) is another name for uranium glass dont ask how I know all this stuff

    6:31 I think I understand what’s going on here. Back in the early 20th century when uranium was still this cool new thing, people went a bit crazy with it and put it basically everything since it glows in the dark. I think this fish bowl is an example of one of this phenomenon. I could be wrong though, but this is my best guess.
    Edit: Did some more digging and apparently Depression Glass is a very real thing. It refers to a type of glassware that was made during the Great Depression era that was much cheaper to manufacture and came in a wide variety of colors, including some pieces made with uranium that would glow under UV light. Apparently this type of glassware is worth quite a bit of money with the color pink being worth up to a couple hundred dollars a piece. The more you know.

    If uranium glass is rare then my parents must have most of the worlds supply because it ain’t rare at their place
    Also depression because it’s from the Great Depression when we had discovered uranium but not yet found out other uses so it was used to make green glass that glows under UV light

    Going to have to put this video on pause- getting my hands wet while my fish are trying to get sucked into my siphon. As I suck they come right over like “water slide?” NO! lol so I need to focus:(

    Hey ftr, I have a question: what are some good foods for betta fish, and what’s a good place to buy them? I’m trying to get into fishkeeping and I’m going to get my second betta soon, so I want good food so that it will live a long, good life.
