Subaru WRX STI - Front License Plate Relocation Kit

- In state that require front license plates, installing the license could mean drilling into your front bumper, or sacrificing cooling capabilities for either a radiator or front-mounted intercooler. Grimmspeed offers a front license plate relocation kit which can be used to install a front license plate, without these drawbacks.

NEW VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY!
Just flagging this, but in many cases the tow-hook threads tie directly into your front sub-frame bypassing your front crash structure. having a minor fender bender with a rod threaded into your tow-hook port could turn a very minor crash into a totaled car by bending up your chassis instead of letting the bumper do it's job. I don't know if this is the case on the Subaru's but just wanted to table it for discussion. I know tow hooks are haute couture in the JDM world right now, but I always cringe when I seem em.
My WRX manual states that leaving something installed there can cause you airbag to become dysfunctional. Bu
GadgetsNGear Actually a very interesting point you bring up, thanks for sharing.
I have one only because it's required by track organizers.
would like to know the ansswer to this Q
Minka Kelly Chad Derby most cars like the STi does have the towhook location mounted behind the front rebar, and on the chassis itself, and since the air bag sensors are mounted on the front rad support(which is infront of the tow hook thread, so yes if you get into a front end accident, the tow hook can bypass the rebar and rad supports and cause damages to the chassis and also "can" bypass airbag's G sensors(but not likely) they put that statement just to protect themselves incase the airbag really fail to deploy when its needed, but the impact require to deploy the airbag, something as small as the plate relocation kit, or anything thats on the tow hook wont really do much in preventing the deployment...(side note: on some cars the tow hook thread is actually located on the front rebar itself, such as the Z33 350Z, and G35)
This product is awesome, this particular version for the subbie crowd also fits perfect on all model year's of the current Hyundai Genesis Coupe. I had one ordered and ready to go upon taking delivery of my coupe, yay for no annoying holes! :)
there are a few other plate relocate kits on the market, and none (except for ATQ's) has as much adjust-ability as the Grimmspeed. any angle, and setup. The ATQ one is more expensive, only because it comes with a Gopro mount on the top of the plate back.
I need to use one spacer on mine, though maybe it was how I mounted it. I would also suggest trimming the excess license plate screws. You don't want to have them catch on your bumper. Ask me how I know.
wow, a lot of people don't like this mainly because of the holes on the bumper?! Just buy a Cobb license plate delete and your car will look better than it did stock. Plus it gives you 6hp!! ༼ ಠ益ಠ ༽
😂😂 I fucks with you. I bought the "Wrx" License plate delete and it looks way better now.
Here in Switzerland insurance will only cover you if you have your license plates mounted and you also need to have them mounted as a proof that your car is registered and roadworthy.
There are even regulations on the height at which the plates need to be mounted and the angle at which they may be tilted. Also the rear plates must be illuminated lol
Can you please do a video explaining unequal length headers?
pretty simple really. one is of equal length and on is not. that is wat gives a subaru iots subaru sound having unequel length headers!
I've heard that the unequal length headers aren't as efficient, I'd honestly what to know how big the difference or if there even is one
Bryan Doherty There is no reason for them to be inefficient. The difference is only in sound as far as I know
Tom Major I looked at some dyno charts for equal length headers vs unequal length headers from Perrin for an STI and that showed the unequal length headers had a 15-30hp increase at low revs and 10-20hp increase at high revs. They also add torque. So the people I've heard saying that are wrong about. I really like the sound of the unequal length headers so that's good news for me, the unequal length headers sound great
Bryan Doherty The more you know! Thanks man, that is really interesting. I also enjoy that boxer rumble :3
Nice! I just got the same Grimmspeed kit for my BRZ last month. A great excuse to pick up a torque wrench, too. :)
hey! how did the kit turn out? still holding up after 6 years? lol let me know pls
@@offthemarket-1935 Still holds up great. It's might not be exactly 100% horizontal, but unless you're truly compulsive you'd never notice.
and now you have 2 holes where the licence plate was meant to be. I would just leave it stock.
That's what license plate deletes are for but I agree I wish it wasn't there in the first place. I have seen some people shave that off but requires some plastic weld and paint.
And I think the restriction surface on radiator intake is about the same...
they make things to put there and they can say things like wrx
People are commenting about how much better American plates are because they have rainbows or unicorns of whatever on them.
Well Euro plates won't block airflow to your radiator or intercooler.
1 - 0?
The main reason behind this product is not to avoid drilling holes, but to look more like an Evo that actually has a fmic. Mounting the plate in the untended stock location does not interfere with radiator cooling because the car has bumper covers behind the stock plate location. In summary, Evos have a side plate therefore it is cool
Very clear tutorial & easy to follow! Thank you!
I had to do a pre delivery inspection on a 2015 Lincoln MKZ... had to drill in the bumper, I almost cried.
I don't understand why we have to run front plates when police always gets us from the back?
Nice to see a video with your subie !
Simple informative video. I’ll gladly be the 1,000th like 👍🏼
Isn't this dangerous? Technically, any frontal impact will hit straight into the frame due to the thick metal rod going into the frame. The bumper becomes useless in protecting the rest of the car. I was under the impression that an impact into the license plate area (or those colored tow hooks people have hanging out) has a big chance of totaling your car due to frame damage. Along with being far more rigid than the rest of the bumper and hurting someone more.
I think your dead on about frame damage, but I don't think that small post will do much to the energy dissipation in the large scale. If the impact is hard enough that your worrying about energy dissipation, the whole front end is going to crumble. At a lower impact force, it would probably just act as a pungy stick, and impale the other persons bumper. Side impact I could see it being a bit of an issue to cars with thinner doors though.
Hi, what type of plug would you get if you wanted to put a license plate delete on the original license plate spot? I can't seem to find any that go "deep" enough into the square holes. thanks
Subaru should really just offer that tow hook solution as stock instead of designing the front bumper with that ugly flat protrusion for the front plate.
Sorry for off topic, but for a long time i've wanted to understand pros and cons of large wheels. Many people think that more contact area gives more traction, but formulas says that its not... so whats the real advantage?
Maybe you'll make a video about that someday?
It's a great topic. Hope to cover it eventually!
I like it, So if you would still need to drill holes into the front bumper without this re locator kit, what are the two already existing holes in the middle of the bumper for?
even if your mounted it to the side isn't the front license plate engineered to have the air directed through the bottom into the opening
Cheers for the video. Thin rego plate in stock location would look better and cover factory holes.
I have one on my BRZ...do you think it will hold up to a car wash? It seems like it's strong enough. Now that it's winter I need to keep the salt off my car...
Hexnut! The best english word I learned this year :D
Would it void some warranty if I drilled a whole in the cover so dust and debris don't get in there too easily?
I'd get a body shop to get rid of the square thing and the holes on the bumper if I was going to move the plate to that location but I don't need a front mounted plate where I live
Jeez if it looks ugly or not its his problem.
He just made a video to show....the title doesnt say ``awesome custom plate design`` or whatever...chill people!!
so instead of blocking the radiator from the top it will block it from the side, dude the side plate was on the EVO 6 they really positioned it on the side to avoid blocking the IC but us the subie crew do this just because it looks cool
Think I will get one for my 2017. What does it look like inside the hole? It is protected? I drive on salted roads a lot, I was concerned about getting salt inside. Maybe that's silly, I'm not sure.
do u need a torque wrench for it or can i just use a regular wrench
Your tow truck driver is going to hate you...... That's an 8 bolt obstacle course to getting a grip on the front of that car to drag it onto the truck bed. 4 plate bolts, 2 bracket bolts, 1 pivot bolt, and 1 long dummy hook bolt all before the ring bolt can go in. But hey, at least you've got the cover off for him!
briansmobile1 You could probably just rotate the whole thing from behind the plate with a wrench. Either way, how often do you get towed? I've been driving for 10 years and am yet to experience it. And I believe my chances have decreased now that I have AWD.
Hey man, great videos.
I wanted to point out that the correct technique for using a torque wrench is to apply and equal force with your alternate hand at the the head of the wrench. This helps reduce bending loads in the bolt which may cause the torque to be set incorrectly. With larger torques or shallow bolt heads this becomes necessary in order to keep the socket on the head.
I'm that loser that lives in a state that doesn't require a front plate but I want to do this just so I can have a Japanese plate on my Subaru.
So I overtorqued the bolt, am I screwed? It moves but not that easily
Instructions not clear enough, mounted my plates to my $1,999 roof rack kit I never use and got a $1,400 no license plate ticket.
what about project integra?
not trying to be negative but it looks like it actually blocks more air going into the radiator than the normal position and because of how airflow works it also blocks some of the air that goes into that vent on the left
and if you are really hardcore about your performance you are also blocking the front spoiler but it shouldnt be noticeable at all XD
Moving the licence plate there, I would imagine, takes it out of the highest pressure zone, which would deliver a higher volume of air to the intercooler/ rad. Moving it to the side may also act as a scoop, as air is forced to the sides by the grill.
Fraser Davidson i really dont think this product was tested on a wind tunnel and i really dont think this would improve performance at all!
I highly doubt it was tested on a wind tunnel, but with aero dynamics, without seeing either computational dynamics, or actual wind tunnel results, we are just grabbing at straws. I would put my hypothesis on a slight improvement in air flow to the rad, but then again, I'm not an aerodynamicist.
And don't forget about getting stucked or something else. That holder will be a pain for the tow truck guy.
won't work for cars with tow hooks under the bumper.... though perhaps just the plate bracket can be put in old plate mount holes but moved up etc.
Question: Does driver need to take the plate off when washing car in gas station?
i've seen license plate stickers in europe on the front of the cars. that's a lot more elegant
I didn't like the spot of the license plate so much .. if you get the long license plate not the square one .. and install it on the original spot it is gonna be better .
cant choose your size in america
Kingdom Of Mog oh the irony
this has nothing to do with the video, just a doubt that i very badly want to clarify. why do you think a manufacturer will reduce o/p power from 213hp(2007 4GR FSE) to 203hp (4GR FSE 2007 afterwards and in some cases before too) what could possibly be the logic behind doing so?
We get the Jdm style ones in Australia now
Hey I am getting an FR-S soon and don't like the superchargers or turbo kits available. Turbos tend to overheat the engine and I hate the noise. SuperChargers are cheap but sacrafice on gas milage cause they are belt driven. What about straight power through individual throttle bodies and velocity stacks I want an NA engine without the sacrafice of gas mileage and turbo chargers with intercoolers. I like throttle response over lag too. Just looking at horsepower gains can you get more through ITBS setup?
Itbs by them selves probably will not gain any horsepower, and will probably actually rob you of low range torque, which is where that engine lacks most. The engine makes 200 hp NA, out of 2 liters, so it's already very well engineered in the first place. The problem with just doing itbs, is the engine will probably be choked equally by all the other intake, exhaust, cam timing/ lift, ECM tuning, that the engine will not breathe any better than stock. If your looking for a street able engine, as a primary purpose, either very small turbos, or a small supercharger will be your best bet for the best possible street package. I'm not an expert on these particular engines, so I would look into seeing if there has been any credible (3rd party dyno) HP gains with exhaust/ intake modifications. It's almost always cheaper to remove weight from the car, than it is to make power, so I would look into light rims or brake discs, to lower unsprung mass, which will make the car feel faster, and then I would look at how much weight you would be okay removing proportionally to comfort/ gadgets. Lower weight also allows for better fuel economy, and better handling. Hope that help you :)
Fraser Davidson Well no I looked at some forums like the Honda NSX about na power and the increase of 40 hp with itbs and velocity stacks. Actually getting air sucked into the engine like a vaccuum and making horsepower just by air intake alone is pretty good. Because each individual throttle body is activitated acts like a carburator producing quicker throttle response and also makes a killer sound note within the engine. Everyone in these forums with the FR-S either have a Vortec Supercharger or an GReddy turbo kit. Pretty boring stuff make 90 horsepower not huge at all. Turbo lag and supercharger kit bolt ons are tacky in my book. I wanna swap the engine cause it's too weak and possibly add a Boxster S engine get 315 hp that wouldn't be bad but it would be a huge project. Transmission, ECU and all the wiring would be extremely hard but hey it would be a project. Maybe put the battery and extra weight in back to balance the car out.
Fraser Davidson By taking the engine out and upgrading as I go to would be kind of fun. Start with a blank car and then create.
Ryu Fūrinkazan I dont mean to be a total ass hole, but if you think that the only reason why the greddy kit only makes 90 hp is because that is the limits of the engine, then you have some serious learning to do amigo, before you can even contemplate an engine swap. They limit boost in the greddy kit, due to the strength of the stock engine components. I'm 99% sure that there is already upgrade connecting rods, and pistons on the market that will allow you to build and engine capable of making ungodly amounts if power for the FR-S. The FRS motors are actually a lot better than the of EJ motors for making power. The old EJs made 500 hp easily, which is stupid amounts of power for the FRS chassis. A Porsche straight six probably will not fit, and will cost way to much money to even make remote sense. Plus, due to its extra length, it will absolutely wreck the FRS' polar moment, which will make it handle like a steaming pile of shit. The Porsche engine is also designed for mid engine, and rear engine applications, not Front rear, so cooling ports will probably be placed in the wrong spot most likely. To even contemplate a swap of that magnitude, you better know how to fabricate sheet metal. know how to weld, know how to machine, know how to engineer components, and have the tools to do so, or have an absence amount of money ready to be invested.
You cannot compare one engine to another. the honda NSX engine is an entirely different beast, ITBs take a huge amount of fluid dynamic, and engineering to design properly. Hondas are notorious for intake and exhaust gains, but most other vehicles are not.
90 hp is more than enough for a stock FRS. The beauty in the FRS is the balanced chassis and power. You do not want to overpower a chassis, and dyno queens are terrible street cars. 90 hp will put you close to 300 hp, which is definitely not amateur hour power on a track, in a #2700 car.
Buy the car, get some very good driving instruction, and a lot of seat time. learn how to work on your own stuff, and learn how to set up a car. use the money saved to buy tires and track days. A good driver in a stock FRS, can blow the doors off of a bad driver in a super car. Its not the answer you want, but its the one that makes most sense. Adding power into the equation too early will cause you to be a sloppy driver, and could possibly lead to you killing you nice car.
Power comes later, and at huge expense. I like that your enthusiastic about this stuff, but its not a cheap hobby, and its one that requires a vast amount of technical, and practical knowledge. You will get there one day, but for now, its probably best not to stray to far from the known. A greddy kit will be awesome, and if your worried about heat, buy a better radiator, and a better intercooler. And trust me, I like to stray far from the known. I'm currently planning a BMW E36 Ford Duratec motor swap.
Some good places to learn about the finer details of automotive design and tuning is the Bosch Automotive Engineering hand book if you can handle some math and engineer speak, Any published book on technical aspects of cars, The book How To Make Your Car Handle, and Forum threads where the claims are backed up by math, and hard data.
Also, I'm quite aware of how ITBs work, and how they affect the harmonics of the intake column of air :)
Sources: I've worked on $300K Porche 917K replicas, Raced go Karts, Built mt own car, and have been machining/ fabricating with metal since I was in grade 9.
Fraser Davidson Well no on the piston and connecting rods/ HKS makes a 2.1 displacement that cost an ass load of money like 3800 bucks talk about bigger displacement .1 difference. And shit I have seen LS1 swaps into the FR-S already. Driving instructor what? I have driven the car soo many times hint Toyota Salesman/ Everytime I am on break I take it out for a spin. I also talk to all the mechanics and engineers too in the garage. It needs a six for sure Subaru makes one for the Legacy rr. But I would love to see a new concept rather same old stuff. No I don't want a big V8 5.7L although simple engine and swap massive torque and horsepower gain but it's not practical like a Porsche. JDM engines lack the na power and torque because they want you to tune everything on your own. No I just want simple power. I hate the sound of the engine of the FR-S its like a buzzing and just sounds like crap overall. The boxer setup is pretty simple. No I believe it can be pushed back so it could be balanced it is not impossible. Toyota is coming with a new Supra and they want 80 grand for a v6 engine that is straight insane. On Ebay brand new Porsche engines are under 20k I am just imagining a Flat boxer 6 NA with 315 hp in a superlight weight fr like the FR-S. Just a dream. I drive the car everyday through hairpins and long winding roads it's fun but it can be a lot more. I am not a ricer but it would be a dream. I love Porsche's but the price of the cars are ridiculous.
another great one!!!!
I would do this, but the dickheads at Toyota already drilled a screw into my bumper for the plate. The holes are a huge eyesore.
where did you order that?
Will this fit on my Rover ?
Cool product thanks for sharing.
What exactly did that do? It still blocks the front air and it's ugly as sin.
Does it fit on lancer gt 2015?
Ever have issues with this kit when taking your car to the car wash?
It blocks my led light bar so I just need to move it up a bit bit that plate alowes you to
Would It work for a MK6 GTI vw??? :)
Hi,
would this relocation spoil the aerodynamic field around the front splitter?
I fear this was some engineering that didn't need explained
I tried to do this for my 2013 legacy, and it wouldn't thread at all. anyone know how I can make it thread?
Weird question, did you purchase the proper kit? I'm not to sure about the differences but I know they sometimes make some changes depending on vehicle model. I know typically lengths, but the thread could be different as well.
+Arthur Archer I bought the right kit. grimmspeed sent me another bolt which worked fine till I applied the anti seize to the threads of the bolt... so that's why it wasn't working for my car.
+Msngr0fd3ath so did you get it to work and if I ever have similar problems, what did you do.
+Arthur Archer yes it works. and I took off as much anti seize as I possibly could. and took a wire brush an tried to get anything off the threads inside the tow hook that's built into the car.
I support you fully as a TH-camr and I am your fan but this mod is a waste of money. I'd rather spend the money you spent on that, on anything else...gas, food, ect... At least the rally armor flaps made sense, paint protection and its nice to the people behind you.
I don't think the kit is that expensive. Keeps my car legal to drive without me having to drill in the front bumper, should I move to another state and not need the front plate. Different strokes for different blokes.
Damn bro stop justifying everything. It's just for looks not everything has to be for a "performance" reason
so you never had a front mount Ic I can see. It would effect an evo more than a suby because of the smaller openings there have also been tests of a cooler Ic without a plate in the way
I have that for my gt86 awesome
still working good?
Ant-eye seize? Wit isn't it ant-ee seize?
Hello, i know this is a little off topic but you're a very smart guy who seems to know a lot about everything. I know a fair amount about cars but i am having trouble finding correct information about the Nissan s13. 180sx, 200sx, and the 240sx. The engines that came with them for what countries they went to ect.. If you could make a video that would be awesome, btw i love your videos😄 thanks
it would look good if the original spot/holes disappeared.
Just fold the plate, so only the numbers show... That bracket looks kind of cheesy....
I like it!
Your front plates should be facing the driver's side after relocating it not the passenger side because if a cop is on the opposite side of the street he needs to be able to see it and scan your plates people who relocate their front license plate to the passenger side deserve to be pulled over and ticketed
Not in every state it is illegal to move your plate. And if you knew any better, Cops are always in the breakdown lane side scanning or stopping "usually". Rare are they in the driver hand side of the lane unless you are traveling in passing lane and you get pulled over for that. So you just basically pulled this out of your ass.
+Gravecb7 Accord I know people that do it on their ford trucks and aren't into the Jdm or preformence crowd and don't get pulled over. There isn't a law stating where it goes on the front. You just need a front plate. I understand that if a cop is looking directly at you they may or may not see it but most cops won't look up your plate from the front unless you look suspicious and they can still see it anyway. Bro it's just 2 feet over to the right lol
I never got the 5mm here nut smh
Why not install it on the driver side ?
Waste of $ nevertheless.
Is that your WRX, STI???
Can't you just put it on the dash or not anymore?
drfizzle420 Doesn't legally count. Plus I don't want a license plate flying at me in the case of an accident.
please stop "modding" the subaru , it is perfect as it is! do all these mud flappy , lincense plate shit to the other car. Cheers!
this looks turd would rather keep mine in the windshield/dash area and just pay the odd fine
Max Muffin That's fine. It doesn't meet legal requirements in the windshield, and should that come at you when airbags deploy, it probably won't end well. I'd just not do anything over putting in the windshield.
I used to think side plates were dumb because I'd see a handful of guys riding with their fog lights blocked off. Now I realise I was just looking at morons.
tug it out, giggity
did you learn on how to drive yet?
Can't find my keys.
looks horrible... wtf?
you made it worse
