Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed �The Colbert Report,� which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. 44excalibur Let me explain what I meant by "May there never be a party like you again" I hope there isn't a party that is so hypocritical that it was the most progressive party at the time that ended slavery and put america back together after the civil war. But, eventually turns into a bigotry party that wants the conservative politics (which is the opposite of progressive by definition) to oppress and control millions of people for there own benefit even though it will not benefit even there own grand children in the long run.
***** Okay, let's review. First of all, the Republican party under Lincoln was a party made of up many factions, only one of which was progressive. They also had a conservative business-oriented party and moderates all of which were part of the former Whig party. Second, the Republican party didn't just become a "bigotry" party. True, many of the bigoted southern Democrats left the party and became Republicans after Kennedy and LBJ pushed for civil rights reforms, but do you think that all of the Teddy, Eisenhower, and Rockefeller Republicans from the northeast, central, and western states just up and vanished? The southern Dems that became Republicans are bigoted because they're southerners, not Republicans.
Third, you seem to think that "conservative" and "progressive" are defined by "bad" and "good." Let me remind you that "conservative" implies less centralized government and greater free market and private sector control, while "progressive" implies a more centralized, activist government. Those differing philosophies on how government should work have nothing to do with race, it has to do with where power should go, with the states and the public, or with the elites in government. Right now voters on both sides are angry at the elite establishment, which is why you have Trump on one side and Sanders on the other. The Democrats are having their own little rebellion led by the Sanders voters who want to push the Democratic party away from the traditions of FDR, Kennedy, and Clinton, and closer to European socialism, which is by definition the anathema of American separation of powers under the Constitution.
Fourth, let's not forget that the Democrats did not run on a platform of "civil rights" under Kennedy. Kennedy had LBJ as his VP pick to win over southern Democrats, and LBJ actually blocked Republican civil rights legislation in the '50's during Eisenhower's administration. When JFK reached out to Martin Luther King Jr.'s family after his arrest following a demonstration, Bobby Kennedy and LBJ flipped out, angry as hell that JFK could've cost them southern votes. These Democrats were not civil rights activists, they were running on a platform of beating the USSR in the arms race and the space race, and running to the right of Eisenhower and Nixon by accusing them of letting the USA fall behind. It was only after the Kennedy's saw an electoral gold mine in luring African American voters away from the Republicans(MLK was a Republican) that they courted African American voters to turn the election in their favor. This was part of the dirty tricks operation that the Kennedys employed in the 1960 election. In Chicago, African American communities recorded more people voting for Kennedy in 1960 than were actually alive. How exactly do dead people in cemeteries vote for JFK, I wonder?
This is the same strategy the LBJ used later in 1964, when he famously quipped "We've lost the south for a generation" after signing the Civil Rights Act. LBJ conveniently went from being a southern Democrat who blocked Republican civil rights legislation in the '50's to signing civil rights legislation that secured African American votes in 1964 and ensured a landslide victory against Barry Goldwater. And afterwards, African American families saw their sons go off to fight and die in Vietnam, as the draft under LBJ targeted low-income communities and non-college youths. When Nixon adopted the "southern strategy" he was simply turning the Democrats' own strategy inside out.
But did this mean that all of the northern, central, and western Republicans all of a sudden turned racist overnight? Former California Democrat turned Republican Ronald Reagan switched parties in the 1950's due to the Democrats' policies under the highly unpopular Truman, and what Reagan thought was a weak and feckless foreign policy after the Korean War and the Democrats' seeming capitulation to communist regimes. As the Democrats embraced the left, they also seemed to embrace socialism, which is what drove many Cold War Democrats to the Republicans. Was there a racist element in the Republican party after Nixon's southern strategy? Of course, because the Dixiecrats were most certainly racist. But that only confirms a racist element in the Democratic party as well. And how then do you explain the Regan Democrats who voted Republican in the 1980's? These blue-collar, moderate Dems in the northeast and Midwest, many of whom became Republicans, are supposed to be racist as well?
And does not the Democrats pandering to minorities for votes to keep a rich, white, elitist Democrat establishment in power also count as racist? How long have the Democrats courted African American voters by promising the world and producing minimal results? Do you see the problems in the African American community even after eight years of Obama? And now they're doing the same with Latinos. If the Dems didn't see Latinos as the fastest growing demographic in the USA, do you think they'd pay so much attention to them? And do Latino voters actually think that the Democratic party can really fix the immigration system to their liking? They have this little thing standing in their way called the US Constitution. The Democrats are not going to be able to stop illegal immigration from being illegal. Believe me, both the Democratic and Republican parties blow the racist dog whistle, they just do it at different frequencies.
***** Uhh, Nixon wasn't even in power when JFK was killed. Nixon ran for California governor in 1962 and was defeated, and afterwards became a private citizen. He was working for a New York law firm, Nixon, Mudge, Rose, Guthrie & Alexander in 1963 when JFK was assassinated. And sure, JFK's father, Joe Kennedy, was the one with the mafia connections, but it is a matter of record that more voters voted for JFK in Chicago than were actually alive, and it is also true that JFK did not run on a civil rights platform in 1960 and only courted black voters to win the election. Why would JFK want LBJ, who was a favorite of Dixiecrats, if he had any interest in the civil rights movement? I'm not criticizing JFK, mind you, just pointing out that the Dems crap stinks as well.
