Pablo Popovitch's most notable achievement was winning the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship in 2009, taking first place in the 66-77 kg by defeating 4-time ADCC Champion Marcelo Garcia.
Pablo won by 1 point, a point where he was penalized for timidity (Pablo desperately avoiding Marcello while up by a point) which would have taken the match to an extra round, but the judges nullified the ref's penalty point and handed Pablo the win. MG never settles for points, never stops trying to submit just because he's up in score. Otherwise he'd have won many more championships.
Marcelo had already submitted pablo with a wristlock.

Ben Askren proved that wrestling is the only sport that can bring you to the very top by itself. Askren had 0 striking or bjj.

Sambo, many fighters like Khabib, Zabit, Islam, and Khamzat trained for international Sambo competitions, before MMA. Alex Perreira, Yair Rodriguez and Jiri Prochazka are also mainly kickboxers and don't wrestle/grapple at all, but all of them are top in their game.
Marcello would crush Kahbib like he did Ben. Way too high level bjj.

He also dominated Renzo the match before that. After that tourney, all eyes were on him.

Garcia won with his head. He didn't want to risk tiring himself with using muscle. He stuck to smart fighting

we saw it multiple times in gi, roger won but marcelo looked good. just roger was way to long and huge for xguard game marcelo was using in gi.. in no gi? marcelo could beat roger probably 4/10 which is crazy given their size. roger wasn't that great no gi but in the gi he was unstoppable
