- A couple hears a fight next door.
VOICES is used with permission from Abbie Lucas. Learn more at abbielucas.com.
Tara and Drew are moving into their new home, but as they bring and sort out their boxes, they are disturbed by the sounds of their neighbors fighting next door. At first, they debate whether or not they should intervene or call the police.
When the fight turns violent, they decide to go next door. But what they discover is even wilder, and more revealing, than they initially thought.
Directed by Abbie Lucas from a script written by Omar Khan, who also co-stars as Drew, this sharp, subversively clever short drama seems to be one thing at first, a gently incisive examination of social responsibility and violence. But as the film progresses, it reveals itself to be more unexpected and even eccentric in its design, putting the spotlight on the couple's marriage itself.
The storytelling begins in an ordinary register, as a husband and wife are bringing boxes into their nicely appointed new home. It's a simple domestic situation, rendered in writing that has a good ear for character and specificity, and the look and feel of the beginning feel natural and straightforward. But as the noise next door pervades the scene and then intensifies, that straightforward quality ebbs away, especially as Tara and Drew argue over what to do.
What initially looks like domestic harmony reveals flintier differences in temperament and opinion. Tara thinks they should intervene if it's a domestic violence situation, but Drew worries about damaging future relationships with their neighbors if they're wrong. As the couple, actors Amanda Clapham and Khan feel believably "lived in" as husband and wife, but the adroit writing bubbles with small, unaddressed conflicts. These come out when the film takes a Mobius strip of a turn, bringing it into territory that's also more psychologically revealing and trickier to resolve, especially as those smaller arguments coalesce into something larger and more ominous.
It's a truism in couples counseling that spouses in a marriage tend to have some version of the same fight again and again. VOICES takes that idea and runs with it, to memorable and witty effect, charting as a seemingly content couple spirals into something darker. In the end, it becomes a portrait of a marriage in all its complexity, with all the ugly thoughts and hidden resentments coming out. And perhaps, with its strange, surreal ending, it becomes a metaphor for lifelong partnership itself: a closet-like chamber that exists only between partners, filling up with more skeletons as time passes.
This short seems to show how often times couples main issues are never resolved and recirculate over and over again over the course of the relationship. Sometimes escalating. This was a very clever way of illustrating that.
I loved the small detail, when she noticed that their picture was broken, she blames him and he blames her. It's as if that was the first small symbol that their relationship was slowly crumbling and none of them were willing to take responsibility for their mistakes or at least understand how their actions affect the other.
I also enjoyed the time loop, as the illustrated issues really do feel at some point after having been buried (or hidden) or never really solved and understood, they feel repetitive, tiring and you don't know where they started and have no idea how you could end them.
Yes! And when she says, "She might be hurt," and he replies with "Or he might." Seems farfetched until it isn't
That poor guy, trapped in there with that violent, abusive woman

I actually worked with Omar back in the day. Seeing him excel is inspiring to get back into acting.
I worked with Omar too! Crazy, small world. Me and him we're janitors together at the We Ball Gym. When things got messy, he was always extremely insightful and intelligent with his humor. Like that one time that I won't go into details about...
This short was very unsettling. Great job with the suspenseful music and clean editing, and the acting was decent.
Unsettling? Yo! Grow a pair!
THE PERFECT SHORT FILM DOES EXIST!
I love this film. What a ride! I keep noticing new things on rewatches too. The acting is great. The way the scenes are setup make me want to be a Director (I was rubbish in drama at school).
I’m following Abbie Lucas to see what else she’s going to make because this was fun! I wanted to ask what a feature film version of this would be like but honestly it felt just right as a short.
Also, the soundtrack was note perfect! The right amount of eerieness and momentum and all the timings were spot on. As if the arguments didn’t have enough tension. Well done the composers. I probably wouldn’t have noticed the music if I hadn’t given it another watch but the music does so much heavy lifting.
Whatever problems other people have with the time loop thing are things I think make it brilliant.
I don’t know if this was a bad thing but at some point I couldn’t tell if it was supposed to be cinematic or look like a documentary. Some shots were cool and slick and others were like a fly on the wall. Maybe that’s still a good thing. Thank you Omeleto and please do more of these films!
Hey Everyone! I'm Abbie Lucas, the director of 'Voices'. Thanks so much for watching and let me know if you have any questions!
I have a question
@@boboloko cool, what’s your question?
Loved this short movie, just wanted to know what would happen if they met each other
@@abbielucas considering the size and age of the universe, why have we yet to see any evidence of extraterrestrial life?
@@boboloko This one might be above my pay grade as a mere filmmaker, but perhaps we have seen the evidence, we just don't yet have the enlightenment to perceive it as such.
I watch lots of Omeleto shorts and don't typically comment, enjoy most immensely, this made me laugh and think, very creative, well done 👍
HAHAHA, when I saw them go to the same looking door, I thought if it doesn't have like a time loop then that'd be awesome, then it turned out that they did!
Omg this was cleverly done!! The end you could see how many dimensions overlapping each other!!! 😂👍
Beautiful direction , good acting and nice suspense , must say a good movie .. The two actors have kept the viewers totally engrossed ! And the end, with them caught in time loop is mind boggling !
I was gasping and wowing,
the whole 10 mins.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 ,
I truly love this short film .
Love how the woman in the short immediately assumed the man was the aggressor and insisted on it and then she turned out to be the aggressor herself. It do be like that.
Wow! That thing when a couple gets bogged down in that cycle of fighting. It does feel like a time loop paradox thingy.
I hate when that happens.
Stalled: Domestic Violence Edition
Lol
🎉 Excellent plot twist at the end!!!
Time loop, horror, biases what a brilliant short well done
i liked this, i loved the twilight zone esk feel to it
Good short films are like a good short story, very difficult to accomplish with good storytelling. Thank you for this. One of my favorite examples of the power of a short story is “Mrs. Dutton writes a Letter”. You can find it online for free. I read it every so often because I seem to find a new nuance with each reading.
Is it Dutton or Dutta ?
@@blessed9491 Duggar.
Wow. Harrowing! Well done. Great writing.
They were worried about the wife being abused but it was actually the woman committing abuse against her husband
Yeah ... great side commentary there in terms of prejudices because of male/female stereotypes.
Only difference in reality is, that females are much more often committing psychological abuse instead of physical ... the preferred (but not exclusively so of course) channels of violence of both sexes.
And sadly the psychological one is far more subtle as well as less made aware off compared to physical violence (by men against women).
Hate the main actress's character. That girl's a real PoS
Why do people always wander into stranger's houses aswell 🤦♀️🙄, unrealistic... just leave it to the police 🚨.
Yeah it was them all along, but I thought he saw himself 🤔 . But they're in a weird time loop . It's an interesting way to show domestic issues & problems that repeat themselves in a relationship which never get resolved,so I guess they're both stuck that way.
Which is awesome! We need to see more of that!
Delightful, great performances and a very strong script, beautifully directed by Abbie Lucas.
while i predicted the plot twist, it was still really good
" I didn't see that coming " - which could, but wasn't his line. Clever stuff well written and nicely performed.
Loved featuring this short at our film festival! Great to see it released online!
Hello! I’m so glad that you enjoyed this short film that I wrote, produced, directed, and starred in! (You might have missed me, as I am the only person hiding in the closet who is not a facsimile of the couple!) Feel free to ask me anything!
Is there life on other planets?
@@boboloko As the omnipotent writer, producer, director, and film star, I can safely assure you that there is no life on other planets, and only a modicum of intelligent life forms on this one.
Great work! Did you get inspiration from "Triangle" (2009)?
Bizarre! I loved it. LOL
A nightmare from which you can’t wake up.
Wasn't expecting that! Haha
Oh, this is so funny that I laughed out loud---but I have no one to share it with----so, I'm writing to YOU to say this was one clever, fantastic idea for a story! Thanks!!Lynn in NYC (where my neighbors don't fight! LOL!!)
Well, that'll make your head hurt, trying to figure out when and how this whole shebang got started. And what happens when they run out of room in that closet. 😁
I was also wondering what happens when there is no more room LOL
@@hollywhite6296 Perhaps the closet expands infinitely.
The real question is why didn’t any of the previous versions try to leave the closet? They had enough time between loops.
@@pathetic2399 fear may have froze them when they realized they were in hell.
good film and a nice twist
Like something they borrowed from Rod Serling !😅
This short was amazing! More More more!
😂😂😂
I expected the new two screams.
Wow I definitely wasn't expecting that!
Haha brilliantly done. Great acting too.
Crazy man, reminds me of "The Outer Limits" or "Twilight Zone"
Very clever! Awesome 👏!
When you checked Aldi for weeks for Tumeric (and your entire background to the 9th century is Irish)
What?
Don't move next door to yourselves.
Hahaha
Nice!!!!
Beautifully done! I love time loops. Fantastic!
Amazing story and acting well done 👍
I find time loops like this very interesting
A female being abusive is SOOOO REALISTIC 😔😭💔
Good film, it uses several clever & entertaining devices. This will inspire many conversations.
Pretty nice movie
Love this short!
I thought the neighbours arguing was going to be a manifestation of their own relationship. I wasn't too far off...
I love the concept !! Would love see more of your films
That closet sure filled up fast!
Very clever. Got really claustrophobic as it progressed - as couples' fights often feel...
if you can hear them, they can hear you
Outstanding! Really marvelous by the entire team…👏🏼
At first I thought they were ghost but were actually chased by doppelgängers.
Very good short film, nice story and great acting👍, they could see themself in mirror to find out what was going on next door!!!
This was great. Congrats, Abbie!
This was genius! 4 years of abuse from her repeated over and over and all the couples represent that.
People, do not stay in a toxic relationship, run away asap as fast as you can!
Agreed. She's obviously a terrible partner. He needed to stand up for himself and fight back!
I noticed there is no longer a brief description of the short film when I pass my cursor over the video which makes it more difficult to decide whether to watch it. I would appreciate Omeleto reinstating a brief intro that is visible when I pass my cursor over the link so I am mroe likely to watch the video.
Yeah. If not, you risk to lose 5-10 minutes of your life when you could have washed the damn dishes!
@@hollyperrin7353 Maybe chill a bit? You'll live longer.
@@dirkhartog7438 😂Oh! Make me feel like a woman!
They took it away because they knew we'd all skip the LGBP(aydough) and Feminazi material they pump out on the regular
@@hollyperrin7353 Errr, it;s very kind of you to offer...
That was brilliant, thanks!
Love this
This was really good! Did not see that coming.
Bravo Omeleto 👏🏾
Very twilight zoneish! 👍👍👍💕😳
yeah seriously thank you for the coutless hours of distractions:)
THIS WAS A MASTERPIECE 🔥
But what happens once the closet fills up?
loved it
Women please don’t put hand on men!
gosh that was so creepy
Pretty good
Dr Strange would be proud of the Time Loop
I assumed time loop when they heard voices and then felt more and more sure when it went on. Something just gave me that impression.
You become what you are, when you are, who you're not.
Shout out to Dolores Cannon because of her I can watch this in such a different an profound way .Understanding we live in a multiverse out comes can loop or split depending on witch ones we give the most energy.
So why couldn't any of them leave and go back next door? Also is the understairs 'closet' supposed to be seen as a metaphor? I loved it! 😂
Ha!!! Genius 🎉
OH DANG! That moment when you realize 🤯
That's clever.
Why’s he such a scaredy cat
Strange Men get shot, whilst feral women only get yelled at when invading ones home.
I think he’s just reacting the way most people would. They wouldn’t want to get involved either and would want to leave it to the police.
Toxic ppl paired up with toxic ppl, and never addressing their toxicity, repeating the cycle and hiding it in the closet.
Bloody hell!
And that music!
Woh 😮
I haven't watched omeleto in about a year... this is the second one I watched today and...
I'm back guys!
wow, he should have just left after that. You never hit a partner
Sees his literal doppelganger bloody and in despair. Reaction: this is fine.
Such bad writing on this one
❤
👍👍👍
Nice ❤
Im 6.5 min in and I think it's a loop; they are going to argue themselves and they themselves will be listeling at the wall. The loop continues. They are trapped 💀
Damn, that was really well acted and I was properly intrigued when the loop started becoming apparent but I don't think I can enjoy that ending at all...
There's just a Harry Potter door with an endless supply of clones cramming themselves into it, endlessly waiting for what?! GAH!
They’re in the closet.
@@FitLadyJoy I know, along with an endless supply of themselves that have apparently all decided to remain quietly hidden in there... Why?!
They had the gumption to walk into the situation when the neighbors were still presumably strangers, but then decide they're just going to quietly hide in a closet and do NOTHING as new versions of YOURSELF continuously pile up in front of you?
Time travel stuff completely aside, I don't get it.
infinite loop

OMG spooky
Hi, Lesley. It's good see a familiar face. 🙂

Even though in real lyf they fight in different clothes at different tym on different places the underlying cause of fights might be same I i think.
Wow, another movie including a time loop, how exciting!
(Of course i'm being ironic).
I am not saying the movie is not good. It's great, but it could've avoided that resource.
Family issues? Great, actually. Not necessary to include time loop. Exhausted resource.
You mean sarcastic, not ironic. Sorry, I'm being that person, will shush now 🤐
