- A woman discovers her husband's manifesto.
MANIFESTO is used with permission from Matthew Kic and Mike Sorce. Learn more at imdb.com/title....
Kylie and Ian are a happily married couple celebrating their anniversary soon. Ian is a writer, and Kylie arranges to have an older work from college made into a book for him. But in the course of preparing the present, she stumbles upon an old document on his computer, a manifesto that reads exactly like what a shooter would send out before committing an act of violence.
Kylie is disturbed by what she reads, and she can't reconcile the loving husband she knows with the angry, disturbed writer of the manifesto. The ensuing discussion opens up a rift between the pair, rocking a once solid marriage and surfacing even deeper fears in Kylie.
Directed and written by Matthew Kic and Mike Sorce, this intense, compelling short drama functions on multiple layers: it's a story of a wife discovering the depths of a husband's disturbing potential for violence in the past, exploring just how our past is carried into our present, especially when it comes to pernicious worldviews and actions. It's also an incisive snapshot of the moment a happy marriage unravels, as seemingly solid foundations reveal themselves to be much shakier and scarier than thought.
Shot in an anxiously handheld camera style and shadowy, cold cinematography that emphasizes each character's isolation and mystery, the well-written narrative is initially propelled by the wife's curiosity, making the storytelling more intimate and quieter at first. But the restrained tenor still builds considerable tension, as Kylie discovers an aspect of Ian's past that she wasn't aware of. It's a significant omission, one that might have changed the way Kylie saw Ian at the start of their relationship in college, and it begins to change the way she sees him now.
As Kylie, actor Jacky Park deftly conveys the growing disbelief, anguish and then horror as her previous understanding of her partner and her relationship collapses. Actor Connor Foster as Ian accomplishes a tricky balancing act of a performance. To Kylie, Ian must convince her and, by proxy, the audience that he's not disturbed anymore, bringing up questions about art and catharsis. But in the film's larger design, he must also cast enough doubt on his explanation to maintain the suspense and mystery that propels the film to its quietly disturbing ending.
By placing the discovery of Ian's past in the present of a satisfying marriage, "Manifesto" poses powerful questions of just how much of Ian's disturbed, violent and toxic thinking was youthful angst, mental health challenges, cultural and social conditioning or perhaps simply character. In the end, we and Kylie don't truly know, leaving her in what amounts to an emotional cliffhanger -- one that shrouds the couple's fate in uncertainty, and perhaps even Kylie's safety.
"I won't let her" was chilling.
Yeah. That was the line that made me wonder if she would be waking up the next day!
@@crow_feather Well If she doesn't leave him then her life is at risk . He's unstable AF which is scary and creepy , and he's clearly capable of anything .
@@gemstar7286 I'm not saying she shouldn't leave him. Clearly, she absolutely should. I'm saying he may kill her before she has a chance to escape. If she makes it known she's leaving him, he will most likely try to kill her, as he made it extremely obvious that that's what his plan was if she ever tried leaving him. So, she has to be careful, and be sneaky about it. Hence, her needing to go to bed with him, to pretend like she wasn't trying to escape.
@@crow_feather Yeah I'd leave when he's asleep or not in the house.
@@gemstar7286 Yeah...like, pretend to be asleep, and then, when she's sure he's asleep, grab her stuff, and run! But that's what's so creepy to me... because what if he tries to kill her as soon as she comes to bed? 😳
Side note, but upon rewatching this, I just noticed at the 2:03 mark that the desktop picture of her he has on his laptop is the same picture of her he shared on the 4Chan site. That means he was thinking of her in light of the threats he made both on 4Chan, and in what he wrote, the entire time. That was a really subtle, yet really well done detail!
Just goes to show you you can never be 100% sure of how well you know someone! This entire film was so well done! Incredible acting, incredible script, and the pacing was spot on, building to the really awesome ending that left me hanging at the end with so many unanswered questions! I'm really finicky about what horror I like. It has to be really well written for me to enjoy it, rather than just rely on a body count the way far too many do, and this, right here, was perfect! Well done by everyone, all around!
This had me on edge. Imagine...you are someone's only reason to not go through with an act of premeditated mass violence. Utterly horrifying.
At first, I thought it was hinting that if he didn't meet a girl that he would kill himself. The taking out of other people revelation had me suddenly scared for her. Very believable the way he tried to explain his way out of what he wrote, saying it was because he's a writer. I've watched enough of these short films to know there's a last moment twist, but part of me was hopeful for her to have been just reading into things and for the relationship to work out. This ending left me feeling like he was going to figure out what she had found & read on his phone. That his statement, "I won't let her" would end up with him taking her life, thus she really would never leave him.
That's pretty much my train of thought, too. I wasn't detailed about the ending, but it seemed like a thriller or suspense.
One of the best shorts I've ever seen. Very well written and great acting.
Interesting. I think exactly those two aspects are the film’s weak points.

Good story idea, great acting on the woman's part, terrible acting from the guy and terrible filming. Why does everything have to be shaky?
Whoa... Wouldn't want to be in her shoes... Well done and nice pacing.
Some of these comments sympathizing with the guy are more disturbing than the comments on 4chan in the video.
Didn't read your comment until after I posted mine. But that's what 4chan is like.
My favorite so far. Chilling and well written, good actors.
The guy actor was not great. The woman was amazing though.
As a writer, I really related to that part when he was speaking about channeling his emotions into a story that won’t hurt anyone , I actually wrote a story that way , It was about a guy who eventually k*lled himself and a lot others in a bus accident he caused.
But the thing is I (fr) didn’t do anything like that irl
Which made that ending more 💀💀 for me
@ 12:51 Those 4chan trolls egging him on were just as disturbing as his "My Lonely Life" screed.
Well _that's_ one of the most terrifying things.
Minor technical notes: I'm not sure how all those text files were just 400kb. And pausing the rapid scrolling through the online manifesto was amusing as it included a line saying it's just sample text pasted over and over. Other than that, disturbingly believable.
Font and format off for 4chan, as well. It took 3 seconds to compare/contrast.
That sample text to me was just another indicator that this wasn't just a work of fiction to the writer right after the first indicator of finding this text in an online forum.
Fantastic short, would love to see a feature version!
Still thinking about this film, months after seeing it. It sticks with you...
To truly create you must be willing to have one foot in the heavens and one foot in the abyss…without fear of losing yourself,.
Corny tripe
This is a really solid short film! I think it would make for a really great feature.
Spectacular flick! Great writing and acting, love the handheld camera too
Omeleto coming out with good stuff again. Love to see it. Took a break from the channel because they were putting out stuff so bad it was annoying, but here we are - maybe a year later - with this, the woman waking in hospital, "How to Meal Prep in a Famine", the actor confronting an online troll... I'll be back tomorrow to see what else they've got.
Wow… this is truly terrifying. Awesome writing and acting.
Ohhhh wow 😮😰 that was pretty good! 👏🏽👏🏽
Great job!! Well written and directed!
Wow, chilling, I am still uneasy.
Fantastic ending. Very well done. "Shot in an anxiously handheld camera style...." Far too much movement.
This is such a common personality type today Im surprised shes switched on enough to be concerned.
Great job! So creepy.
This is dark and unpredictable. The secrets should have remained hidden. This is beautifully done.
This was actually dope. Curiosity does more than kill the cat...
Chilling and scary! Such good acting. What a great short! Well done!!!
Ooooo, great thriller! Thank you everyone. 💙🌎
gripping! really well done short
Great acting by both loved it 🥰
Well done! Very tense.
Run honey and fast. Hate it when you find out how really crazy he is..
This one was very very good
Wow. WHAT a cliffhanger! Really great stuff!
Yeah, I thought that it was just a story about relationships and stress, but it turned into a cool suspense.
@@eugenetswong It really ramped up at the end, esp with the stuff online and the pictures ... and of course, his final, chilling message. Very cool. I'd love to see more.
@@cappsie1 Yeah. Also, when we saw what he said online, it began to feel like a more fleshed out story.
Cliffhanger? It’s not a cliffhanger.
@@eugenetswongclosed the loop, nicely.
This was so good!!!
Incredible. Well done!
Dam i use to watch u when i was younger crazy to see u guys pop back up in my feed
i'm honestly amazed. until the ending, i wondered why this needed to be a story told in motion picture. but god damn I've been thinking about this for 15 minutes and just now really reflecting on what i've seen. my immediate reaction was to do chores... I just changed loads in the dishwasher, took out the trash, and washed my hands before i realized i needed to come and sit down and write my rhoughts out. kylie's reaction in the end is mesmerizing and i absolutely believe Jacky Park in that moment. the nature of the story manages a clever and easily identifiable meta. what it provides is not commentary, but expression.
i cannot help but feel an empathy for kylie. in her mind, in the immediate future it is quite possible that she will die by her husband's hand. in the near future, if she manages to escape, he might hurt others or himself. cliffhanger endings are provocative and should be used within reason. i think the writing in this short film demonstrates excellent reasoning
I love the story!
Well done!
Excellent!
Too much parmesan on the spaghetti.
Omeleto was MADE for my work breaks!!!
Oh dear. Oh dear. Oh dear.
Full length movie please
As a writer, I wanted to believe him, but as a woman, I couldnt give him benefit of the doubt
When you realize you're married to a psychopath and start planning your escape.
If she has time to plan. She might not wake up the next morning.
So, what will she do? Part 2 please 🙏🏾 🥹
Fascinating idea for a short.
Was there a fly in the bowl of pasta?
There was! That happened unplanned, and we took advantage of it. It felt like the perfect metaphor for how she was feeling in that moment.
@@mikesorce794 Good job, I really felt her "discomfort" with that ending.
T@@mikesorce794 Thanks for keeping the fly in.
Thank you for sharing your work with us.
@@mikesorce794 Thank you for keeping it in.
Thank you for sharing your work with us. I liked the suspense.
@@mikesorce794 Give that fly a tiny Oscar... it was perfect, highlighted her apathy about her food as her world was turned upside down.
Why is this shot like an episode of law and order? There are tripods and steady cams you can use so the shots aren't all shaky. The handheld camera aspect added nothing and reduced the ability to focus on the story. That guy actor is also not great. The female lead was great though. I hope to see her in better productions.
Didn't see that coming.
Whoa! There is much left for us to discern. Chilling and captivating short.
Bravo 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏!!!!
Oh my... :o
Now what do they do......??
She finds the opportunity to leave and then goes to the police with the evidence she has on him.
Or, she could Love ❤️ Him. Since she knows how emotional depression can consume him.
The problem is he knows she would do that.
Orrrrr…. She stays and learns to use his broken soul and manipulates him. Eventually making him her little puppet.
@@pathetic2399 Evidence that he planned to commit a crime years ago, then changed his mind and didn't do it? What would the charge be? Since he didn't do it, and he's no longer planning to do it, I don't think there would be any charges that would stick...?
When did Omeleto get so dark? Pam (Tom's wife)
What do you do with this kinda information?
It's a pattern.
It takes hold of minds , festering
until making it onto paper,
spreading , taking over others .
Once matter is introduced to it that is where the real nature is revealed.
😮
I was so happy that there was an interracial couple that I didn't pay attention to the story.
Ohh he won’t let her?? We need a part 2. This was a pretty good setup - don’t quit right before you do the real writing. You lack stamina for bringing the payoff?
Lacking stamina has nothing to do with it. The cliffhanger ending was beautifully done because it leaves it up to the imagination as to what is going to happen, which keeps you guessing, and thus thinking about all of the possibilities as to what could happen. Keeps the film lingering in my mind far longer than if I knew what was going to happen. It was damned well done!
What do y'all think would happen next?
NEVER write it down.
I felt for him, she was too suspicious!
…… whether applicable or not, I’d like to bring another twist into this story, fiction. What if even Kylie is part of the story, a character brought in after the manifesto. What if Kylie is just another fictional character in the story of “my lonely world”!!! And Ian has an imaginary conversation with his created character and is trying to justify his story…..
Don't go snooping
Snooping is what quite possibly saved her life. Now, she knows to plan her escape.
It's a great story and topic, but a bit unrealistic.
it’s very realistic. i’ve been there.
soooo whos gonna die?
The storyline is great. The dialogue isn’t.
Poor guy
I think you mean ... poor girl.
@@RPRosen-ki2fk Yeah, I don't know why we should feel sorry for him. He probably has trauma, but that doesn't change things enough.
@@eugenetswong because he is trapped in that dark place
The guy needs help for sure, but she needs to get tf out of there before he kills her.
Terrible.
Yawn -- bad evil male, good virtuous female... same old, same old.
This is the story of real mass shooters though. They write these manifestos and so many of them express rage directed at other people for being romantically unwanted. It's chilling.
